Locked On Twins - Daily Podcast On The Minnesota Twins

Much is unknown about the future of baseball in 2021, much less the future of anything with COVID-19 still a massive concern. Evan Drellich of The Athletic reported Sunday that spring training is "likely" to start on time. This is great news for fans and players who are hoping for a more normal season than they saw in 2020. In another report this weekend, our friend Darren Wolfson tweeted that the Twins have shown interest in former White Sox closer Alex Colomé. What's his profile?

The Twins signed right-handed relief pitcher Hansel Robles to a one-year, $2M deal with incentives. Robles enters a bullpen with Taylor Rogers, Tyler Duffey, Caleb Thielbar, Jorge Alcalá, and potentially Cody Stashak. Robles was outstanding in 2019 before regressing tremendously in 2020. What's his upside? What's his repertoire? Where does he fit?

According to our friend Darren Wolfson, the Twins have shown "real interest" in free agent shortstop Marcus Semien. Semien, a former Oakland A, finished third for A.L. MVP in 2019. A "buyer beware" is placed on that season, as it was completely out of line with his career. Could this be a golden opportunity to add a player with incredible upside and a high floor? What's his fit with these Twins?

Ehire Adrianza's role as backup shortstop is an important one to fill this offseason for the Twins. Maybe more important, given the injury questions for Luis Arraez and Josh Donaldson is Marwin's role. Who can regularly play second and third in the case of an injury? Could former Oriole and free agent Hanser Alberto be that guy?

Free agent utility man Jurickson Profar is sure to garner interest in the market. The Twins are in need of a super-utility player. Could he be a fit? How's the bat? How's the glove? What's his projection and contract projection? Let's break it down.

Luis Castillo, a 28-year-old right-hander, has three years remaining in team control at an estimated $20 million. He has one of the most electric arms in baseball, frequently fooling hitters with a disgusting changeup and upper-90s fastball. Reports emerged that he may be available this winter. Should the Twins go after him? What's his upside? What would he cost?

The Twins recently added eight players to the minors, including five pitchers and three position players. They are all intriguing for their own reasons. Let's break them down, assess their fit with the big league club, and rank them by their upside and potential impact on the team in 2020.

Edwin Encarnación has terrorized the Twins (and Target Field) for his entire career. The end of that journey is near as he turns 38 in January, entering free agency for probably the final time. Does he make sense if Nelson Cruz isn't re-signed? Is Edwin "cooked"? Let's break down the numbers.

Miguel Sanó is an enigma to a lot of Twins fans. To some, it's simple. He strikes out too much or he's a premier power hitter. To others, it's more complicated. When he's on, he's a joy to watch. When not, it's ugly. Let's look at all of those points and viewpoints today against the numbers.

The Twins lost two prominent prospects during the Rule 5 draft last week. Akil Baddoo, a 22-year-old centerfielder, and Tyler Wells, a 26-year-old right-handed pitcher. Both players had Tommy John surgery in 2019. Plus, Bob Nightengale reports that MLB is shooting to start the season in May instead of April 1st.
