Locked On Twins - Daily Podcast On The Minnesota Twins

The Twins lost 3-2 to the Royals in Friday's season opener. That was Minnesota's second straight loss after winning six straight. Devin Smeltzer pitched well and the back end of the bullpen showed up admirably. Matt Wisler made a mistake on a slider to Ryan McBroom that put the Royals up 3-2 for good.

The Royals' bullpen was unbelievably dominant. The Twins' bats went cold. They'll look to rebound Saturday against Danny Duffy as Jake Odorizzi makes his season debut.

The Twins suffered a heartbreaking walk-off loss Thursday in Pittsburgh. The Twins held a 5-3 lead in the 8th after homers from Miguel Sanó, Eddie Rosario and Byron Buxton. Sergio Romo walked Jarrod Dyson in the 8th, who then stole both second and third base. He scored on a groundout to make it 5-4. Taylor Rogers came in to close the door in the 9th and couldn't do it. Colin Moran stuck his bat out and singled to left before Bryan Reynolds doubled down the left field line. With no outs and two on, Rogers simply couldn't recover. Kevin Newman pinch hit for JT Riddle and singled in two runs to walk off Minnesota after Gregory Polanco struck out. Polanco also hit a three-run homer off Kenta Maeda in the second inning. Maeda pitched 6 innings and allowed only those three runs.

The Twins head into Wednesday's game with nine wins, tying them with the Chicago Cubs for the most in baseball. Minnesota's next five games are against teams that each lost over 90 games in 2019. The Pirates will host for two games at PNC Park before the Twins head to Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City for a three game series against their rival Royals.

Nelson Cruz walked it off for the Twins in Monday night's victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. On Tuesday, they took a 7-1 lead behind a strongish start from José Berríos, who went six innings, allowing one run and striking out six. The Pirates' comeback fell short and the Twins swept them at home to improve to 9-2. Minnesota is the first team in MLB to reach 9 wins.

The Twins have immense depth in their lineup and rotation. They flashed it this weekend against their division-rival Cleveland Indians. Miguel Sanó homered twice Saturday, Mitch Garver went yard Sunday, and the Twins pitching staff held the Indians to four runs total and a .133 average in the four-game set. This week, Minnesota will face Pittsburgh twice at home and then head to PNC Park to play them twice more on the road. They will then open a three-game series in Kansas City against the Royals. The Twins are in first place in the A.L. Central with a 7-2 record and +25 run differential.

Shane Bieber is pitching at a historic rate. In his season debut last week, he struck out 14 Royals and didn't allow a run. Last night against arguably the best lineup in baseball, he struck out 13 more Twins and shut them out over eight innings. The Twins will look to bounce back against another borderline ace tonight in Mike Clevinger.

Meanwhile, the St.Louis Cardinals announced that two of their players, reportedly both pitchers, tested positive for COVID-19. Their game tonight in Milwaukee has been moved to Sunday. The Cardinals played the Twins in Minneapolis on Tuesday and Wednesday. The positive test results were from before Wednesday's game, creating doubt about whether the Twins should really be playing tonight.

Through four games, the Twins lead baseball with 8.25 runs per game. The Twins improved to 3-1 on the season and continue to look like a powerhouse in the American League. The Miami Marlins have at least 13 positive cases for COVID-19. Two MLB games have been cancelled tonight. The season seems to be hanging in the balance. Meanwhile, the Twins' offense leads baseball in runs after the first weekend as Nelson Cruz continues to punish White Sox pitching. How much longer can the season go? If we get past it, where do the Twins rank in the American League?
