May 15, 2023Lonely Girls in the Studio Ghibli UniverseThe Lonely Girls been talking about doing a Miyazaki episode since the inception of the podcast. Madelaine already knew too much about the filmmaker and Rebecca (being Rebecca) never thought that they would have enough time to properly research and give y'all an episode worthy of the topic. But then we became Season 2 Rebecca and Madelaine and thus transformed into much more ambitious ladies. This episode we are discussing the Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli. Their cannon of films mean so much to lonely girls and have some of the best representation of the archetype on screen. We discuss each of the films (a handful of them we do say, "I didn't watch that one", but not many), look at them through the The Lonely Girls Lens and and *cough* film maker's lens.We also discuss Miyazaki, why his name is so synonymous with the studio, and how his childhood went on to impact his most famous work. May 08, 2023Anne of Green GablesWe're back babyyyyyyyy! Did you see that coming? Absolutely no you did not. Because we didn't tell anyone. We're kicking off Season 2 by returning to our our childhood book shelves and pulling out the first three books by Lucy Maud Montgomery. This week we're going to (trigger warning) Canada and more specifically to Prince Edward Island. Anne has been one of the most suggested topics and we refused to do it until we wanted to. Which is now. We discuss our connection to the books, the life of the author, and (famously) the loneliest characters in the lonely girl cannon. December 26, 2022Love Actually (a Christmas surprise)We missed y'all! We know that December can be a weird time and we ourselves have been reaching for comfort media for help and thought you may be as well. A Christmas Surprise if you will (a phrase Rebecca coined during the 2022 December TN trip) and chose Love, Actually not just because we love it but also because it's absolutely covered in lonely girls. This 2003 holiday rom-com is one of the best loved and most Popular Media Think Piece as late November comes around. We've read the lists on why we love it, why we shouldn't love it, and why we do love it even though we shouldn't. The writer and director Richard Curtis does the interview circuits every holiday season to agree with the interviewers that his film is problematic and admit that he still doesn't know, actually, why we love it so much. There is so much to discuss so please slip on your coziest jumper and pour yourself the biggest cup of milky tea and join in. Thank you always and forever for listening and happiest holidays to you all. You are perfect,Madelaine & Rebecca Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information....more1h 31minPlay

September 28, 2022Jane Eyre and The Shy GirlReader, we read it. This week we're taking on one of the most adapted, beloved, and read by AP English highs school students works ever. We're talking about Jane Eyre. You know her and you may love her. We decided to take on this sulky teen initially to use her as the pinnacle example of a new term we're going to call The Shy Girl. We thought Charlotte Brontë's most famous heroine would be the PERFECT example of The Shy Girl and because of Madelaine Turner's expertise on the adaptations of this classic we would be golden. However. As Madelaine and Rebecca began to re-examine the text they started to form a new theory *gasp* We also give a lot of thought on Bertha Mason because she represents so many women at that time and they deserve to be discussed. So listen along as this literary classic takes them (for better or worse) down memory lane. In this episode we're going to discuss the loneliest moments of each of the characters and how we would apply to them the lonely girl lens. We also inescapably discuss the Big and Carrie relationship. We tried to avoid it but it's apparently inescapable. Grab your baguette and let's hit the town Lonely Girls. Hosted on Acast. September 11, 2022Hunger GamesWelcome, welcome to our first annual episode of The Hunger Games. This past week we both watched our favorite Australians Reaction to Mockingjay (Mike's Mic) and we were like, "Wait naur bestie why are we not doing HangGaymes?" We love nostalgia and to reexamine the past pieces of the media of our childhood and the chokehold this messed up bloody, bloody tale definitely was an obsession of our generation. We're going to be discussing Rebecca's ideas for who should play Haymitch next, what district we come be from, would we survive The Games and Madelaine's ridiculous screw-ball comedy style first date from a few weeks ago. This week we're discussing The Lost Boy, As this podcast series continues we will steadily be adding to our vocabulary and this is officially the second entry. And what could be more perfect than the 2001 rom-com sleeper that truly no one remembers besides us? But trust us on this one. August 19, 2022Jane Austen (Pt. 2)Dearest Listeners, we are (sadly) bringing our Jane Austen coverage to a close this week but we PROMISE we are making the most of it. This week Madelaine recounts an almost lg moment at the Hollywood Bowl, Rebecca outs a Mr. Elton from a certain app, and we go through the Jane Austen cannon and rank each of her heroines from least to most lonely. We then accidentally are able to go through the books and quite speedily are able to sort them all in to lonely girl categories and we are done with our beloved Jane (for now...)Don't forget to follow us at @lonelygirlspodcast on the socials and be sure to leave us only five stars.
