August 12, 2022Jane Austen (Pt. 1)Dearest Listeners, we are BACK bitches and we promise that it was worth the wait. This week we are looking at one of the most important Lonely Girl influences of all time, Jane Austen. Because Austen is so important to us we are taking our time with her for the next two weeks. This week we will be discussing her personal life and next week we will be looking more specifically at her different works. During this episode we will be discussing her through the lens of the lonely girl and whether or not we think she was one herself. This episode is great for Jane-ites and those who half watched an adaptation five years ago. Her life alone is worth discussing and we do hope you will join us. ALSO, if you want to read or listen to the book that Rebecca got most of her information from go and check out Lucy Worsley's biography, Jane Austen at Home. Rebecca listened to it (as usual) but maybe buy a used copy to support small businesses! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information....more1h 4minPlay
July 29, 2022PersuasionDid the newest adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion leave us in agony or hope? The release of the 2022 Persuasion has set the Lonely Girls of the world abuzz and so we stayed up past our bedtime to watch the movie and then immediately record an episode. This isn't your regular Janeite rant. Rebecca was very adamant that it wouldn't turn in to that. So instead we talk about the other adaptations, what went wrong in this version, and what we actually enjoyed *gasp*. What did we get right? What did we get wrong? Idk. We're attaching the two pieces of media below that Rebecca and Madelaine particularly liked. -Moderngurlz: https://youtu.be/fzAY0UmxNIQ-Kermode and Mayo's Take: https://youtu.be/AATrCIcotvA Hosted on Acast. July 22, 2022BirthdaysHappy Sixth Episode to us! This topic is very important to lonely girls because we famously are very bad at them. That’s right. We’re talking about the anniversary that comes every year to possibly show us that no one loves us. Maddie and Rebecca have spent their last individual birthdays together and this week they’re covering this infamous topic. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information....more46minPlay
July 15, 2022Breakfast at Tiffany'sHello Darlings. This week we’re talking about Truman Capote and the novella/classic film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It’s the movie everyone is pretty sure they’ve seen and the poster everyone had on their wall. In the episode we discuss Capote’s life, who was the real Holly, the differences between the film and story, and some of the bts in the creation of the film. We also hear about Madeleine's journey to find a song with generic lyrics and what made Rebecca cry. Stay tuned 🌙 🏞 Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information....more1h 11minPlay
July 08, 2022He's Just Not That Into YouDon’t read to much into this… but this week we’re talking about the 2009 ensemble rom-com(edy?) He’s Just Not That Into You. In this episode we discuss the death toll of the rom-com, how it stands up in 2022, and who are the loneliest girls in this ensemble film. Rebecca and Madelaine may even improvise an entire musical! Who knows?? Pour a Gin(nifer) Tonic and join us critiquing the almost critique of the rom-com genre. July 01, 2022BarbieIt’s time to party because this week we’re talking about all around good time Barbara Milicent Roberts. How DARE you think we would talk about anything else. The female-gaze-pink-tulle haze of Barbie movies began when Madelaine and Rebecca were the perfect age. At every sleepover, car ride, or babysitting gig there was sure to be a VHS with Barbie being a princess, fairy or fairy princess and we think that’s AWESOME. Listen in to learn about why it’s important for your children to play with dolls, what we can learn from a Barbie parable, and (obviously) if Barbie is a true Lonely Girl. June 24, 2022TwilightThis week we’re taking a road trip in our 1963 Chevy StepSide C-10 pickup truck to a place we like to call Forks. This is one of our LA episodes that came from Rebecca’s trip to see Madelaine in the big city. We were fresh from watching Catherine Hardwicke’s magnum opus and you will hear Rebecca’s effusive reaction to watching her new favorite movie for the first time. In this episode we discuss why it had a particularly strong impact on horny lonely girls raised in purity culture, why children who had to raise their parents are more likely to date vampires, and obviously who we think are the biggest lonely girls in the first installment. So put on your favorite fabric covered headband. Bite your lip. And start heavy mouth breathing. Did you like it? Good. June 17, 2022Welcome Lonely Girls - The Secret Garden, A Little Princess & Frances Hodgson BurnettWelcome all you Lonely Girls- to the premiere episode of The Lonely Girls Podcast. Today, Madelaine Turner and Rebecca Botter will be discussing the Patron Saint of Lonely Girls, writer Frances Hodgson Burnett. Sexy, right? This author and playwright is most famous for her children's novels A Little Princess and The Secret Garden. After learning a bit about the life of our Patron Saint, we use these two works to establish and analyze what truly is a Lonely Girl (and what truly is not). Do lonely circumstances make a Lonely Girl? Does having a dead dad make you hotter and cooler? Will either of us be able to pronounce Frances Hodgson Burnett correctly even once? Are diamond mines a good investment? Listen along and find out.
