The heart — seat of the soul, repository of every action and every sin — is placed on one side of the scales. On the other side is the feather of Ma'at, symbol of truth and cosmic order. If the heart is heavier than the feather, Ammit devours it and the soul ceases to exist. If it is lighter, the soul passes on. The students are standing in front of the scales. They are not dead.
