The Lorette Laws and the coalition of sex workers and their allies who beat them back in 1859. Victorian ideas, early Mardi Gras, and a rebellious sex worker protest on the middle of Canal Street. In part one we’ll dive into why the sex workers were able to have a booming economy, the laws that targeted them, and the court case they defeated, ending with the sex workers immediately reclaiming Mardi Gras back from the terrible white men. In part two, I review modern Mardi Gras parades, probably start some drama, and end with a discussion about who is allowed to be assumed as an artist.
