Lorehammer - A Warhammer 40k Podcast

Today we talk about a pattern emerging in modern media, specifically in Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar. It’s something people often describe, clumsily, as the ‘uglification’ of female characters—but I think that word misses the real issue. What’s actually happening is a shift in design philosophy: away from aspirational, exaggerated fantasy and toward relatability and identification. Warhammer was built on myth, excess, and iconography, where everyone was larger than life. As the setting modernizes and broadens its audience, female characters are often the first place that idealization gets stripped away—not out of malice, but out of corporate caution. And that shift changes what power, beauty, and fantasy are allowed to look like in the grimdark future.

In this episode, we dive into the shadowy side of Warhammer 40,000 lore by treating cryptids as the Imperium experiences them, not as codex entries, but as recurring legends that refuse to stay buried. We break down Old One Eye, the Tyranid monster “killed” more times than can be counted yet still whispered about by Guardsmen like a campfire curse; the Void Dragon of Mars, a god beneath the Red Planet whose existence is officially denied even as an entire civilization seems to orbit its sleeping influence; and the Beast of Armageddon, an Ork horror so vast and so impossible that slaying it never actually ended the war it represented. This isn’t about stats or loadouts, this is about why these entities crossed the line from enemy to myth, how suppression and survivor testimony turn monsters into legends, and what it means when even the Imperium can’t tell where fact ends and fear begins.

From the thunderous boltgun to relic blades, ancient banners, and arcane battlefield technologies, each piece of equipment carries a legacy of war stretching back to the Great Crusade. We discuss how these tools are not merely instruments of battle, but revered relics maintained through ritual, tradition, and the tireless labour of a Chapter’s forge and armoury. Join us as we examine the brutal efficiency, sacred history, and mythic reputation of the weapons and equipment carried by the Emperor’s Angels of Death. In this episode, we exhume the armaments abandoned by history: volkite rays that turned flesh to fire, disintegration weapons erased by decree, graviton and rad arms deemed too terrible or too complex to endure. We’ll explore why these weapons vanished from the battlefield, who still dares to wield them, and what their disappearance says about the slow decay of Imperial knowledge. This is a cold, methodical descent into the arsenals the Imperium would rather forget.  Once forged at the height of the Imperium’s technological mastery, rare and retired Astartes weapons are more than relics—they are sermons of steel, plasma, and forgotten science.

In this episode, we crack open the Astartes armoury and get our hands bloody, diving deep into the melee weapons that define how Space Marines wage war up close. From the screaming brutality of chainswords and chainaxes to the cold, crackling lethality of power weapons and lightning claws, we break down not just what these tools do, but what they mean in the myth and doctrine of the Adeptus Astartes. These are not sidearms or backups—they are relics of belief, forged for wars where distance collapses and only dominance remains. Whether it’s a Primarch’s favored blade, a Chapter’s sacred pattern, or a claw built to tear tanks and titans alike, this episode explores why, in a galaxy of guns, the Emperor’s Angels still trust in the edge.
