When you first start a fast or a caloric restrictive diet, the initial weight loss is often attributed to the loss of water weight. There are several reasons for this phenomenon:

  1. Glycogen Stores: The body stores carbohydrates in the form of glycogen in the muscles and liver. Each gram of glycogen is stored with about 3 grams of water. When you reduce your carbohydrate intake, such as during fasting or a low-calorie diet, the body uses up its glycogen stores and releases the associated water. This can result in a significant drop in weight.
  2. Insulin Levels: Carbohydrate intake stimulates the release of insulin. When you decrease your carbohydrate intake, insulin levels drop. Insulin is involved in sodium retention, and a decrease in insulin can lead to a loss of sodium and water from the body.
  3. Reduced Inflammation: Some weight gain or water retention can be associated with inflammation. When you start a caloric restrictive diet or fast, especially if it involves reducing processed and inflammatory foods, your body may experience a reduction in inflammation, leading to a loss of water weight.

It's important to note that this initial water weight loss is temporary and doesn't represent a significant reduction in body fat. As you continue with your diet or fasting, your body will start to burn stored fat for energy, leading to more sustained and noticeable weight loss over time. It's also crucial to stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet to ensure overall health and well-being during any weight loss journey.
