    State of Independence

After Bastille Day on Friday and its rallying cry, ‘Liberté, égalité, fraternité, we sometimes forget that true independence is all three of these qualities, not one. The hermit’s cave on the mountain may look independent, but is a little bleak. When the head of an indie label signs an act it means that they have committed to them 100%.

When an artist signs, they are choosing a community that believes in them and are in for the long haul.We need people who understand us. Who treat us as equals. Whose trust in us gives us real freedom.

Today we play music that understands that real freedom is found in the company of others.

This week a playlist that celebrates both independence and artistic community.

    Notes on a Cathedral

Cathedrals, with their awe-inspiring grandeur and intricate architecture, represent both the best and the worst aspects of the human condition. On one hand, they stand as testaments to human creativity, ingenuity, and spiritual devotion. But, they can also reflect the darker sides of human nature. Their looming presence in

the centre of cities sometimes symbolise the wealth and power amassed by state-sponsored religion.

They feature in a surprising number of songs, so let’s walk through the Narthex into the Nave together.

    The Voice Inside

Music speaks to us as an inner voice because it has the power to express emotions, thoughts, and experiences in a way that words alone can’t. When we listen to music, it resonates with our own feelings and serves as a reflection of our inner thoughts and emotions. It can be a means of self-expression and a way to connect with others on a deeper level. If that wasn’t enough, music has the ability to evoke memories and take us to those important Pyramid stages in the Glastonburies in our lives.

    The Journey Within
Journeys outside often have a profound impact on the journey within. Travel allows us to explore different cultures, different individuals, and awe-inspiring sights. We are forced to step out of our comfort zones, and question our beliefs, values, and priorities, exposing aspects of ourselves that may have remained hidden. The explorer outside is the agent of change within. But as we have seen this week, not all journeys are easy.

    Back to the Garden

From Eden to Gethsemane to Babylon to Kew Gardens, gardens are places of beauty, shelter and reflection. Music that wants to take us back to a time when the land was unspoilt, trees flourished and the soil was free from chemicals. The garden is a metaphor for peace and tranquillity, dating from the Garden of Eden where purity reigned until self-interest snaked in.

Joni Mitchell urges us to get back to garden. For Van Morrison the garden is a mystical, sacred place and before her death Dolores O’Riordan saw the garden as refuge from depression.
