I grew up being told that girls shouldn't talk too much. Because who would want to marry a woman who talks too much? 🤍

So I didn't. I stayed quiet in grade school. In high school. In college. In my friendships. In my marriage. I didn't choose that, I inherited it, and it became my whole personality without me ever noticing.

Today I speak for a living.

But I want to be honest with you about what that took. For years I would be standing up in front of a room and hear this voice asking me, are you really supposed to be here? That wasn't doubt. That was conditioning. That was an identity somebody handed me a long time ago, still running in the background.

In my newest solo episode I'm talking about inherited identity. What we absorb from our families, our cultures, our communities. And I want to be so clear: it is not a bad thing. The best parts of me as a human being and as a woman came straight from my African culture. I carry those with pride.

But some of it was survival. And survival was never meant to be your permanent address.

"We're not human doings. We're human beings."

Most of us have heard a line like that. Dr. Brian Paris actually lived the cost of forgetting it.

This week Isabel does something a little different on the show. She usually talks about women, healing, and burnout, but this conversation zones in on something we rarely make room for: how men are really doing underneath all the achievement.

Dr. Brian Paris built a multi-million dollar healthcare company, a five thousand square foot facility, fifteen employees, the whole picture of success. He was also, in his own words, very good at looking good. Behind it was burnout, addiction, a divorce, and a marriage where he and his wife would lie back to back at night hiding their phones from each other. He calls it being the fish in the bowl, so deep in the water that he didn't know there was another way to live.

When his chiropractic career ended, he went looking for everything he had missed and landed deep in neuroscience, emotional intelligence, and nervous system regulation. Now he coaches executives, entrepreneurs, and especially men on how to actually feel what they feel and still lead.

"You didn't go through all that just to be fine."

That line lands harder the longer you sit with it, and it's the heart of this conversation.

This week Isabel talks with Dr. Debi Silber, a holistic psychologist who didn't just study betrayal, she lived it. First from her family, then from her husband. After the second one she got him out of the house, looked at both experiences, and realized the common thread besides her was that she never took her own needs seriously. So with four kids, six dogs, a business, and thirty years since she had last been in school, she enrolled in a PhD program to study betrayal at the highest level. Her research turned into three discoveries that changed how we understand it.

Here is the one that reframes everything: betrayal is not like other trauma. When you lose someone you love, people rally around you and you grieve. With betrayal, the person you trusted most becomes the person who hurt you, so you don't just lose them. You start questioning your own judgment, your sanity, and whether you can trust anyone ever again. And because the betrayer is so often loved by everyone else, you end up carrying it in silence.

Debi walks Isabel through her five stages of healing, and why almost everyone gets stuck in stage three. Stage three is where you can finally function again, so it feels like progress. But you're living behind walls, flat, numbing the day with food or work or wine, telling yourself you're fine. People stay there for ten, twenty, thirty years. She also explains something a lot of us have never heard: why traditional therapy, as well intentioned as it is, can quietly lock you into that stage instead of moving you out of it.

And Isabel brings in the thread she has been teaching for years. We are so quick to say this person or that person betrayed us, but the betrayal that keeps us smallest is often the one we commit against ourselves.

"The broken parts are the parts people love. They just don't know it yet."

That one line is worth the whole listen, and it stopped Isabel in her tracks.

In this episode, Isabel sits down with Danitza Borges, a former corrections officer who lived through a situation that nearly cost her life. When the adrenaline wore off, one thought hit her: if she had died that day, her three-year-old son would have had almost nothing left of her. She went looking for a way to leave messages behind for the people she loved, couldn't find one, and spent the next six years building it herself.

That became Elys, a platform that holds your videos, voice notes, photos, and music and delivers them to your loved ones on the dates you choose, even after you're gone. Out of the same need she also created the Hot Button, a safety app that starts recording the moment you feel unsafe, whether you're getting into a rideshare, heading out on a first date, or going for a jog. If your phone gets taken from you, the message still reaches your people. As Danitza puts it, the system was only ever built to help after something happens. Women deserve to be protected before.

From there the two of them get into the things that don't usually make it into a polished bio. The masks we inherit and wear for years. Why we abandon ourselves just to keep everyone else comfortable. What a real legacy actually looks like once you strip away the followers and the bank account. And how loneliness quietly became one of the most dangerous things we're up against. Danitza opens up about the abuse in her past, the mask she chose to survive it, and the slow work of chiseling it off. Isabel gets honest about her own years of living with a victim mentality and what it finally took to put it down.

It's funny in places, tender in others, and at one point Danitza pays the show a compliment that brings Isabel to tears.
