  • Intentional Incarnation
Who Are We --- John 1
Caleb Maxon takes us on a deep dive of the mystery and beauty of the Incarnation. The Word made flesh and dwelt among us. As God embodied flesh, so we too are convicted to embody the mission of Christ to the world. Our lives must be a portrait of the kind of grace, love, and sacrifice that marked Jesus' own ministry. Hear how theologians from across the ages have wrestled with this same concept.

  • Who Are We?
    Who Are We? --- 1 John 3:1;11;16
We're back in the Varsity! In fact, we're back in a lot of ways. UNC is full of students again. Distancing has eased. Even the coffee and the bagels have finally reappeared! But after so many seasons of change it's time to ask ourselves a very fundamental question: Who Are We? Join us as we kick off our fall series where we reexamine the marks of our identity. We're grounded in the love of Christ, always, but like any 13-year-old...Love Chapel Hill still has some growing and changing to do.

  • The Great Shepherd
Psalm 23 --- Praying the Psalms
As we complete our summer series on the Psalms in Coker Arboretum, what better way to tie it up than a reflection on one of the most recognizable pieces of Scripture worldwide? Especially when it's done by the incomparable and eloquent Allison Otwell, whose husband continues to evince deep cracks in his professionalism whenever she speaks.
In order to really understand the kind of relationship David's beautiful overarching metaphor illustrates, we need to learn more about the shepherd and the sheep they tend. The complexity and richness of this bond breathes new life into familiar words.

  • The Climb
Praying the Psalms --- Psalm 133
Today, we welcome pastor Marc Johnson back from Lifechurch, and this time he brought the congregation with him! What a blessing to practice the kind of unity sung about in Psalm 133. After all, unity for the Israelites wasn't simply being in the same place. This psalm was likely sung as they were climbing toward the Temple in Jerusalem to take part in the celebrations of God's faithfulness to God's people. Their lives and their faith were enriched by the purposeful fellowship they expressed in that shared pilgrimage to Zion. We are also challenged to explore true Unity: Unit with a "WHY."

  • My Soul Longs for God
Praying the Psalms --- Psalm 84
Longing. We've all felt it to some degree. To no surprise, it's often after something is lost. Psalm 84 is all about the longing for nearness to God. This is especially poignant when the Israelites were in exile, separated from the Temple where God had dwelt near God's people. Today, now that the Spirit has descended, that same longing is now in reach. We are the dwelling place for the Lord. And because of that, we are lovely and worthy of love!

  • Heart of a Worshiper
Praying the Psalms --- Psalm 63
What is worship? This passage is a song, and we're well familiar with the worship section of our services being devoted to songs about God. But that's a small part of the kind of worship David describes here. The variety of emotion and engagement he uses when celebrating who God is shows us what it looks like to have the heart of a worshiper. Even in the desperate situations in life, like David's own here, communion with God is a lifelong discipline with powerful rewards.

  • To Be Known by God
Praying the Psalms --- Psalm 139
This week we examine another of David's more well-known psalms. This one reminds us how well we are known by God. What does that stir in you? Comfort? Conviction? Guilt? Wonder? Some of all? We are being invited into relationship with a Creator who already knows everything about us. And yet we are sought. We are loved. Join us as Valerie explores the vastness and the intimacy of God's nature.

  • Create in Me a Clean Heart
Praying the Psalms --- Psalm 51
A "penitential" psalm. Yeesh. Psalm 51 exposes some of the rawness of what we can bring to the Lord in a world of sin. While painful and uncomfortable to talk about, it feels so REAL, doesn't it? The need for confession and redemption amidst such depravity. And we can't miss that it's a psalm of David, written against the backdrop of his most notorious crimes. It's a difficult Psalm to pray. But maybe it's needed more than ever when so much is broken. It's a cry for mercy; an acknowledgement of sin. but also, throughout it, a hope for grace.

  • Make a Joyful Noise
Praying the Psalms --- Psalm 98
Psalms are songs. Simple enough to say, but remember the kinds of emotions and feelings that come from songs. Psalm 98 is one of sheer joy in worship. It reflects the power of the awe of God's creation, justice, and faithfulness. Jesus says that if human voices aren't joining that song, even the stones of the earth would pick up the slack. Joy in what we have been given is increasingly hard to find these days. But time and again, the refrain of this psalm is used as a challenge to renew the wonder of our Creator and look to the hope of the righteous, yet sacrificial, judgment of God.

  • It is All God's
Praying the Psalms -- Psalm 24
QUICK NOTE: Once again, the initial sound issues resolve in the first 2 minutes. Stick with it!
Ownership and possession. These are concepts that, while not evil on their own, can lead to some of the most devastating behavior we visit on one another. And ultimately, much of it is an illusion. Time, the planet, wealth, all of it are momentary gifts that come from the Lord. When we assume the role of stewards of this bounty, we understand the need we have for God and ultimately the responsibility we have to care for that with which we are blessed.
