  • Welcome to the Psalms
Praying the Psalms --- Psalm 117
QUICK NOTE: The audio does start a little rough here, but it resolves before the 2-minute mark! Today we begin our series on the Psalms, the collection of poetry and music that carries the full richness of the human experience with our Lord. We use them to meditate, lament, rejoice, teach, question, and learn. They are a fixture of a vibrant prayer life. There is power in praying the Psalms; when our passions meet the divine, we have little choice but to find ourselves in deeper places with our God.

  • The Great Commandment
Worship in the Arboretum --- Matthew 22:34-40
It's here. After nearly 13 years as Love Chapel Hill's teaching pastor, Matt LeRoy teaches his last sermon in that capacity today. Jesus, not far from the end of his earthly ministry, is asked questions meant as a trap. He turns them into one of the most important summaries of every lesson he ever taught. Join us today as Matt does the same for his own ministry in our quirky little church in the heart of downtown.

  • Pentecost - What Does it Mean, Why is it Important?
Worship in the Arboretum --- Acts 2
It's Pentecost Sunday! Christians celebrate this as the coming of the Holy Spirit to the infant church, solidifying the presence of God in newly sanctified vessels: Us. Yet Pentecost existed before the account in Acts. The echoes of Scripture are everywhere as the Holy Spirit descends. Like in the time of David when the Tabernacle would be consecrated, instead it is now us who house the Most High!
We also bless Justin in his role as Executive Pastor of Love Chapel Hill!

  • Rooted
Worship in the Arboretum --- Psalm 1
It's one thing to read the Word. It's quite another to live in it. To meditate on it. To make it part of your rhythm and organic growth. But that's what the psalmists encourage. It's what it takes to have your relationship with Christ take root, bear fruit, and spread the seeds of the Kingdom.

  • Living Water
Worship in the Arboretum --- John 4:1-30
Welcome to the Arboretum! Well, not exactly. We're back in the Varsity this week due to the weather, but nevertheless we're maintaining spirit of our yearly tradition. Every May we return to UNC's campus where the church first began meeting, sometimes near the Old Well, sometimes elsewhere, like the beautiful Coker Arboretum where we'll be spending the summer. This week we find Jesus at another well for a familiar story of powerful implication. While it may seem otherwise, this isn't a story of judgement and repentance. The Living Water is hope for the outcast. It is dignity to the powerless.

  • Flesh and Blood
    Eastertide --- Luke 24:36-53
The risen Christ isn't a metaphor for the movement begun by a dead man. Jesus did not appear to his disciples as a shade or apparition. He came to them where they were. He shared a meal. He showed his scars. God is love. No matter what we've done or will do; no matter the wounds we carry, know that the Savior of the world became that by being broken too.

  • Two Friends on the Road
    Eastertide --- Luke 24:13-35
Our series in Luke ends where it began: The Road to Emmaus. Soon after the Resurrection, two disciples find themselves on a road. Jesus was with them on that road, even if they didn't know it then. They discovered Jesus when they recognized the practice of community that was the central tenant of his ministry. It's an image that has recurred over and over to Justin and Matt. Especially today in a time of transition. Listen in for important updates for the leadership of this church.

  • He is Risen... For Sure!
    Easter --- Luke 24:1-12
He is Risen! Don't use the I-word!
Our walk through Luke ends here, at the climax of Jesus' ministry. Death is defeated, both for the Christ and for us. We've been given new life. And we know what it cost to get us there. So how will you use the life you've been given?

  • Justified
Catastrophe of Love --- Luke 18:9-14
A religious leader and a tax collector walk into the Temple...
Jesus' parable sets up what would have been a clear protagonist and antagonist. Yet it's the former oppressor who leaves the scene as having been justified. Once again, Jesus reminds us that works for the sake of themselves are hollow and lead to the sin of pride. The heart of what you do matters when striving for righteousness. And ultimately, it's only through God's mercy that you get it.

  • What Does Love Require of Me?
    Catastrophe of Love --- Luke 10: 25-37
Pastor Joel is our special guest speaker today and we're happy to have him back up! We take on the now-watered-down term "Samaritan" in one of Jesus' most famous parables. That cultural identifier is so synonymous with being a kind person that it's easy to forget the challenge it was to hear for a Jew. It changes the definition of what a neighbor is and the kind of divisions that defined whole identities. It requires a love for those we couldn't imagine loving. And including those whose exclusion we take for granted.
