  • This Man Jesus
On the Way - The Gospel of Luke --- Luke 1:1-4, 24:13-32
We are back home! This message comes from the Varsity before a regathered congregation for the first time since March of 2020! And the sound gremlins have been at work, so apologies for the buzzing. We kick off a collection of series in which Luke takes us all the way through Easter. We begin by asking who this man Jesus was. How was he recognized? What were the theories about him before and after his ministry? And is your own heart not stirred by the life of this man?

  • Living in the YET: When Questioning God Brings Joy
    Habakkuk 1:1-5
We're excited to have Dr. Dee Stokes join us in the Varsity today for our live digital service, one week before the church returns home to Franklin Street 19 months after we left it. In the spirit for Love Chapel Hill's new chapter, Dr. Stokes turns our eyes to the future. But, like Habakkuk, knows that there is time for mourning and pain when the faithful talk to God. A turbulent two years have brought millions to their knees asking God "How long?" in even more different ways. We mourn, but we do not lose hope. We see a brighter future and a stronger faith on the horizon.

  • A People Called Love
    How to Build a Monastery --- 1 John 4:7-21
We. Are. Back! ...Sort of! Today is the first of two Sundays back in the Varsity with a small crew shooting our very first LIVE stream to our congregation! Pray for us as we look forward to two weeks from today when we all regather indoors for the first time since March 2020!
We also close out our How to Build a Monastery series. We look closely at what a community of God looks like and the love that defines it. We state our mission every time we name our church. But listen to what John sees as the ultimate goal for a people called Love.

  • Heart Curved Outward
How to Build a Monastery ---
One of the things we need to be especially careful about in this series is to understand that a life in closeness with God is not one that is separated from the world. After all, sin could be defined as the heart "turned inward" on itself. We are a missional people, called on by Jesus to baptize, forgive, and help others repent. We are imperfect, and we're certainly scarred. So take comfort in the image of Jesus the sacrificial lamb and the man who defeated death but left the wounds in his hands.

  • Read the Psalms
How to Build a Monastery --- The Psalms
As we continue to work on deepening our relationship with God as we engage with the world, Matt has some simple advice for us: Read the Psalms. Those who have not returned to the book for a while may be surprised at the depth of emotion, positive and negative, directed at God. A place where we think chiefly of praise is also a rich resource of anguish, anger, and sorrow. God welcomes the questions. God understands the scope of our feelings. Just ask Jesus, who quotes the Psalms more often than any scripture of the Hebrew Bible, and in places you may not expect either.

  • Living in God for the World
How to Build a Monastery --- Deuteronomy 6:4-9
We're beginning a new series this week! We'll be walking through that teaches us how to live a life of true discipleship, engaging with the world while also sharing an unparalleled intimacy of worship in God. We start with the Shema, an often-repeated passage that truly shows the kind of heartfelt devotion the Hebrew people were called to show their creator.

  • Our Shepherd - Love Chapel Hill 12th Anniversary
    Psalm 23
Happy Birthday, Love Chapel Hill! We celebrate 12 years as a church congregation! Justin and the team invite us to take a look back at the history of our church; the ups and the downs that have marked the life of our mission to Love Chapel Hill with the Heart of Jesus.
We’re reminded of a familiar scripture, the psalm of David comparing the Lord to a shepherd. It is comforting to think of God this way, especially in the last couple of years. God has walked with us and guided us through our moments of joy and sorrow. And God walks with us still.

  • The Kingdom Covenant
    2 Samuel 7:1-17
Today we conclude our fall covenant series with the fifth and last Covenant in the Old Testament. This one is the Covenant of David. One of the clearest lenses through which we can see the coming of Jesus, David was a child brought out of obscurity to save and unite the kingdom of Israel in grand and unexpected ways. As definitive as his anointing was, it’s also important to note the imperfect humanity that follows David throughout his life. His was only the foundation to the perfection of Christ’s incredible fulfillment of the Covenant on the global scale and throughout time.

  • A Better Covenant
    Exodus 14:19-31
Dr. Chris Clark returns as a guest speaker for this beautiful fall morning! We examine the life of Moses and the parallels we can draw between him and the coming of Jesus. Moses is one of the most important figures in the history of the Israelites, and the echoes of the landmarks of his life are seen over and over in the life of Jesus. Moses saw the establishment of the Law and a New Covenant. And Jesus embodies a better Covenant; ultimate closeness with God.

  • The Creation Covenant
    The Core Covenants --- Genesis 1: 1-2, 26-27
Today we begin our fall series! In keeping with our tradition of going to the Old Testament during these months, we’ll be looking at the Covenants of God with Israel. And we begin at the literal beginning. When God created the heavens and the Earth, God gave humanity a key role in its stewardship. That which we have a dominion over in God’s image is also that which we are called to protect and cherish.
