  • Ebenezer
    Joshua 3:14-4:7
Adrienne Cleven rejoins us in person today for a message on the crossing of the Jordan! Prior to their settlement in Canaan, the Israelites needed to get to the other side of the powerful Jordan river. Here is where God's strength is on full display for the benefit of God's people. It's often important to remember the power God has to deliver you from the seemingly insurmountable. Adrienne tells of her own experience that helps her remember this, much like the people of God use the twelve stones to recall the power that brought them to their Promised Land.

  • Get Up
    1 Samuel 2:1-10
Our Connections Pastor connects with us this week with the message! He reminds us that before Jesus, there was Jesus's lineage We often think of David as the key figure in Christ's line, but remember that David was a forgotten sibling tending sheep before Samuel recognized the boy's destiny and anointed him king. Samuel is the son of Hannah, a barren wife sharing her home with a fruitful one. The hopeless pain of Hannah's situation repeats throughout the Bible and even in our own lives as well. Yet Hannah, in her faithfulness, got up from her situation and changed her prayer from pleading to resolve. She spoke in the language of discipline and covenant to God. God's returning faithfulness made her life one of joy and set her as one of the most important catalysts in the line of Jesus.

  • Reconciliation
    Ephesians 2:11-22
We are, as always, thrilled to have Dr. Chris Clark come to the pulpit this week! We dive into Ephesians, where cultures that have been divided for generations are being told that, in Christ, we are reconciled as one people. Though this was written to Jews and Gentiles in Ephesus two thousand years ago, it is just as poignant being read today by a Black man in Chapel Hill. Much of Chris's life and faith have deep roots in race in America. The power of the kind of reconciliation Paul writes about cannot be overstated... nor can the need for that kind of dynamic racial reconciliation today.

  • Why Pray?
    Mark 14:32-42
We are blessed to have Allison Otwell, whose beauty and intelligence are matched only by the unbiased objectivity with which her husband writes podcast descriptions, bring the sermon this week in the beautiful Coker Arboretum. We're tackling one of the more difficult questions we find ourselves asking about our relationship to God: Why do we pray when the outcome often doesn't change. Even Jesus, praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, prayed for a lessening of his suffering that didn't come. Yet the power and benefit of prayer is evident in Scripture and in our lives, and today we'll investigate how.

  • Walking on Water
    Matthew 14:22-33
This week, we're beginning Matt's summer sabbatical with or own Valerie Burgard taking the stage! Val casts fresh light on the familiar miracle of Jesus walking on the water. From the specifically Jewish context of what that walk represented, to the personal journey Val herself took, the faith of Peter and the power of Jesus gives us something we can all relate to.

  • The Church Unleashed - Pentecost 2021
    Pentecost --- Acts 2
We're back! Love Chapel Hill has resumed gathering in person for the first time in 15 months! Fittingly, we are also observing the celebration of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended on the Disciples. The Church itself began in that moment. While we never stopped being a church during this pandemic, we now get the opportunity to celebrate our own new beginning worshiping together. Join us as we recall a people being redeemed as they are able to hear the words of God in their own languages, across culture and station.

  • Last Words
    Matthew --- Matthew 28:16-20
It's fitting that today we end our series in Matthew with Jesus' final words prior to his Ascension into Heaven. And we are so excited that we are using these words to end our digital-only worship format. We'll be regathering at the Forest Theatre next week for those who are able and comfortable. But don't worry; these services will continue to be filmed and posted to ensure that we continue to worship together with our whole extended community!
Hear the culmination of Matthew's Gospel as Jesus effectively passes the church into the hands of his followers. One of the most clearly defined mark of a Christian comes from Christ's Great Commission. A Christian is a disciple...and a disciple is a missionary.

  • To Sum it Up...
    Matthew --- Matthew 22:34-40
Once again, Jesus is bated into controversy. Imagine a public figure being asked leading questions in an attempt to discredit their values and alienate their followers. Shocking, right? But Jesus handles the question of the most important commandment in a deceptively simple way: Love the Lord with all your heart is the most important followed by loving your neighbor as yourself. In this way, he actually sums up not only the Commandments, but much of what the rest of Scripture is about. We are made in God's image. And as God's image we are to love our Creator and those who have been created. It includes the outsider. It includes the planet. It even includes yourself.

  • Seeds, Soil, Sower
    Matthew --- Matthew 13:1-8
Today we're covering another of Jesus's famous parables. This time it's the parable of the Sower. It's one thing for the Gospel to be spread to all corners of the world. Where it lands, however, and the kind of ground it lands on, will have profound effects of the growth. The love of God and the reach of the Gospels is vast. Consider your heart as you hear it and the life that it awakens in you. Does the Kingdom grow and flourish within and around you? Or have you found yourself in an environment of poor soil? If so, take heart! Jesus does not just resurrect himself.

  • Laborers in the Vineyard
    Matthew --- Matthew 20:1-16
Jesus tells a controversial parable where the kind of grace we normally celebrate becomes a point of contention among those who receive it. Two thousand years separate us from these texts and it's still just as easy to hear the voice of the laborers as our own. The wage we earn for a longer day of work is the same for those who only worked a fraction? This is a parable that can get uncomfortably close to the heart of who we can be. Rather than celebrate a generous master we tend to be incensed when that same generosity bucks our own expectations of value. True followers of Christ are called to rejoice in the sharing of the Kingdom and must be humble enough to become servants for the less fortunate.
