  • What You Gain, What You Lose
    Matthew --- Matthew 4:18-22
The ministry of Jesus is beginning in earnest. This week, we follow him as he calls his first disciples. We don't always realize what they gained in this moment. After all, these men were those not already following a Rabbi and were, as such, likely rejected as candidates to do so. Jesus's invitation is actually a great honor. Their choice to follow him immediately is easy to understand in that context. But remember that they left their old life behind. And their walk with Christ brought pain, hardship, and, for many, untimely death. Following Christ is hard. The gain is unimaginable. But no one, least of all Jesus, said it would be easy.

  • Echoes
    Matthew --- Matthew 3:13-17, 4:1-13
After Dr. Joseph's broad message on the themes of the Gospel of Matthew, Matt returns this week to continue highlighting key moments in the ministry of Jesus in the same book. We begin where Jesus' ministry begins: Jesus baptized in the Jordan and tempted in the desert. Already, Jesus is firmly rooting himself in the history of the Hebrew people. He echoes the past failure with a brand new example of redemption. His identity and his trust in the Father is powerfully reaffirmed, even before his first miracle or sermon.

  • Jesus is On The Move
We are excited to have Dr. Abson Joseph from Wesley Seminary as our guest speaker today! Join us as he takes us through the book of Matthew, focusing on the ministry of Jesus as a man on the move. As his travels echo the movement of the Israelites of ancient days, Jesus establishes the new Kingdom of God. He demonstrates how we are to live and love one another, who our families are, and what our mission is. His movement is a call to us. How, too, will you move in service of the Kingdom?

  • Dreams and Voices
    Matthew 2:13-23
On one of the more defining weeks for our country in decades, we welcome Pastor Melinda Priest from Awaken City Church in Boston. One thing we need to note about our Capitol being breached by a mob on Epiphany is this: the Magi had the revelation that the child in Bethlehem was the King they were seeking. They were also told that Herod was not. We the American church need to not only repudiate the kind of violent devotion to national figures on display this week, but also repent of the part we've played in legitimizing it for so long.
Whether we've heard God's voice in a dream or not, reflect on the kinds of voices you consider as an authority. Are they voices of love, mercy, and compassion? Perhaps you, too, need to rediscover the voice of God as Joseph and the Magi did.

  • Epiphany
    Epiphany 2021 --- Matthew 2:1-12
Welcome back to Love Chapel Hill! In this, the first service of the year, we are excited to welcome back Pastor Anthony Smith from Mission House in Salisbury, NC! It is also the season of Epiphany, when we celebrate the coming of the Magi to Jesus. These men saw signs that a child born in Bethlehem was something world-changing and worthy of worship. Christ had come not a someone knew, but as God revealed in a new way. There are signs of change today as well. We're being awakened to breakdown of many aspects of our world and the need for salvation everywhere. To whom do you put your trust? And where do you think you're being drawn?

  • Identity and Mission
Come, Lord Jesus --- Matthew 1:18-25
The 4th Sunday of Advent is here! Merry Christmas! The coming of Jesus is at hand! Even in such a year as this! We've spent our Advent season understanding the powerful history of the line Jesus is born into. This week, we look at what even the names of Jesus, Joseph, and Mary tell us about who Christ will be for the world. In a culture where names were so important and powerful, it would not have been lost on Matthew's audience that the stories of deliverance and redemption permeate this small family's identity. As we close out such a tumultuous year in our history, remember the promises inherent in the person of Jesus and God's continuing work to fulfill those promises...through millennia of brokenness.

  • Honest Acknowledgement, Redemptive Healing
Come, Lord Jesus --- Matthew 1:2-6
On this, the 3rd Sunday in Advent, we continue our look at the genealogy of Jesus and the rich context it sets for the birth of our Savior. Matthew deliberately bucks patriarchal tradition and ensures his audience confronts the brokenness of even the legendary line of David from which Jesus comes. He reminds us Jesus's story is rooted in rape, betrayal, power abuse, and loss. But far from cheapening the coming of the Messiah, it actually sets the precedent for what Jesus is. Jesus comes into a broken world and has the power to redeem even the most desperate of circumstances.

  • A Seed of Faith
Come, Lord Jesus --- Genesis 15:1-6
On this second week of Advent, we light the candle of Peace. And in looking forward to the coming of Jesus, we look back at God's first covenant with Abram. The faith of one man began a holy promise from God that one man's descendants would become the People of God and outnumber a sea of stars. The covenant continues for generations up through the coming of the Christ, who would take the punishment of our breaking our end of the deal on the cross.

  • An Unexpected King
Come, Lord Jesus --- Matthew 1:1-16
Believe it or not, we have reached the season of Advent. Each year, we spend the four Sundays leading to Christmas recreating the anticipation the people of Israel felt awaiting the King that would save them. The book of Matthew begins with a genealogy of Jesus, linking him principally to Abraham and David. The intention is clear. After a king chosen by the people turned inward and became selfish, Samuel anoints a young man who is a dozen siblings removed from who anyone would have expected in Jesse's home. Jesus, too, is the unexpected King: arriving in peace and love from a virgin in a stable. When the leaders who are supposed to represent us have failed and a difficult year has left us weary, our hope lies in the Lord and in deliverance from unexpected places.

  • The Bridge-Building Troublemaker
    Kingdom Tide --- Luke 3:2-15
With Advent just around the corner, this week we are closing out our series in the Prophets. Fittingly, we look at the ministry of John the Baptist: the last voice of prophesy before the coming of Christ himself. By embodying the spirit of the Prophets of old and being the man to baptize Jesus as God's Son, John bridges the gap between prophesy and fulfillment. But more than that, he did what the people of faith proclaiming the Word of God always do. He got into trouble with the powerful. The fight for righteousness and justice goes on. It will always take the courage of those willing to put their life on the line against the mighty who would prefer us complacent.
