  • The Authority in the Heart
    Fall 2020 --- Luke 11:21-22
We welcome back Pastor Dan as our guest speaker this week! And he's not going to sugarcoat it. Things are a mess right now. What is it that has authority over your mind, heart, and health? Is it Christ? Few would consider it weakness if it wasn't right now. Tension, division, and fear have defined the last 6 months and you'd be forgiven for being distracted. But the strength of that which has taken control of your life has never been equal to that of your Savior's. Trust in the power of the Lord and His faithfulness to restore order to you in times of chaos.

  • Share in My Troubles
    Philippians --- Philippians 4:14-23
This week we bring our summer-long series on Philippians to a close with the final verses of the letter. Paul reminds the church in Philippi of what brought them together, the troubles and the triumphs. He is grateful for the friendship he's been able to receive in prison. And he's taken heart in the growth of Christ's message, even in Caesar's own household. Today we say the same. Take heart! Hold fast! As we begin a new semester with the all-too-familiar disruptions brought on by the pandemic, it's the hope of Christ that will renew our visionary contentment and embolden us in our mission to be the light in a darkened world.

  • Visionary Contentment
    Philippians --- Philippians 4:10-13
This week we're diving a little further into the posture of visionary contentment that Paul presents for us. When there is pain and hunger and uncertainty in the world, contentment is probably the last thing you would think to find. In fact, Paul understands that even when all is going well it is something that can never truly be found by the things of the earth. Whether incarcerated by the Romans or at the height of his power as a pharisee, Paul knew that when he surrendered everything he was to Jesus that he had found the well of everlasting water and would not thirst again.

  • Peace in the Reality of Anxiety
    Philippians --- Philippians 4:6-9
Well before the pandemic threw so much into doubt and disarray, anxiety had been on the rise in our country. One can only imagine, then, where our collective psyche is today. Finding peace in the world is about as difficult today as it's been in over a generation. And yet Paul describes God as the God of Peace. And that finding a kind of transcendent peace is possible without ignoring the reality of the world or the resources available to combat it.

  • The Wild Ways of Joy, Gentleness, and Peace
    Philippians -- Philippians 4:4-7
Paul throws some of the fruit of the Spirit into our passage today, as we resume our series on Philippians. They aren't words we're used to hearing these days. And considering Paul writes from prison to a growing movement amid heavy Roman suppression, they may have seemed out of place at the time, too. Joy, gentleness, and peace. It feels like this isn't the year for those. But the call to live in Christ is a call for "visionary contentment." Don't get this confused with naive optimism, though. What does this even look like? Listen to how our church has embodied this and how we can continue to do so!

Once again, we're so excited to welcome another of our extended LCH family to the digital pulpit. Hanna Watson has blessed us with her powerful poetry in the Varsity on many occasions and has felt called to share the message with us today.

  • Peacemakers
    Philippians --- Philippians 4:1-3
The final chapter in Paul's letter to the Philippians begins with a reinforcement of all that the imprisoned Paul prays that the growing church becomes. Then he curiously mentions an unknown disagreement between two prominent figures in the church. But there is so much here that we can learn about conflict between Christians, especially now in one of the most polarizing times in a generation. Keeping the peace is hard work, even between in as small a scope as ones own family. But we're called to do more. We're called to be the peacemakers. We must endeavor to dissolve borders between others rather than avoid them.

  • Citizens of Heaven
    Philippians --- Philippians 3:15-21
Christianity is a journey. This is a recurring theme for Paul, and it is no less true in this passage in his letter to the Philippians. By Christ we are saved and we have become citizens of Heaven, but that is only the beginning. Jesus's life on Earth and the intervention of the Holy Spirit are working a transformation in us to be more Christ-like. We have work to do here as part of the Kingdom. These last several weeks have made that all the more clear.
