  • Rubbish
    Philippians --- Philippians 3:1-11
Paul's tone changes here to something a bit more vehement. He very clearly needs his audience to understand what genuine worship is. And he colors that with what it is not. The outward signs, the rites, the social standing, even Paul's own history as a Pharisee...they count for little more than rubbish. The freedom in Christ that Jews and Gentiles alike have transcends social and racial boundaries. We are followers of Christ because of who we are and what we do.

  • Paul and Timothy
    Philippians --- Philippians 2:19-24
Today we look at the archetypal relationship between mentor and disciple in the example given by Paul and Timothy. We encourage you to not only learn from their example in the early church, but to also identify the those in your own life who serve those same roles.

  • Works In, Works Out
    Philippians --- Philippians 2:12-18
Nationwide protests and demonstrations this past week have shown that thousands of voices demand a change in how this country understands justice. We return to Philippians where Paul lays out a Christian's responsibility in an uncertain world. We have to understand that though our salvation is not earned with works, it absolutely compels work from us, particularly for the sake of justice. We are called to be a shining example of love, especially in our darkest nights. Empty symbolism and ritual without obvious action will change nothing.

  • Breath - Pentecost 2020
    Pentacost 2020 --- Acts 2:2-8
Today we mark the descending of the Holy Spirit to the church. In echoes of the original Pentecost when Moses brings the Law to the ancient Hebrews, the Spirit comes in wind and fire upon the disciples proclaiming the Gospel. It signifies that the power and Spirit of the Most High dwells within those who claim God's Word. But though the image of the Spirit here is often portrayed as fire, the most prevalent representation of the Spirit was that of wind or breath. And so we pause to consider where the Spirit is today when a man had his own breath stolen under the knee of injustice. The murder of George Floyd has once again brought the brokenness of our institutions and relationships with one another into sharp focus. We cannot celebrate the breath of God today without accepting the responsibility that comes with that gift to speak for the oppressed, as Christ himself did time and time again.

  • The Name of Jesus
    Philippians --- Philippians 2:5-11
We continue our series on Philippians, the letter proclaiming the hope and identity of the church written by a man in isolation surrounded by danger. Whether we're gathered or separated, what does love look like to you? Before the Gospels were written, Paul recognized that the nature and pattern of Jesus' life was itself a reflection of the Love of God. Christ, fully God, met us where we were in humility. Love is longing for God and finding God reaching back.

  • Christ Hymn
    Philippians --- Philippians 2:6-11
We take Christ's divinity for granted today. It's one of the first confessions we make when becoming believers. While there may be debates as to whether or not Jesus being considered one with the Father was developed in the Gospel over time, the question fails to take into account earlier accounts from the growing church. Philippians was written a decade or two before the earliest Gospel in the Bible. And Paul makes a powerful statement about who Christ is that leaves little doubt to the truth in which our Church is rooted.

  • A Digital Worship at the Well
    Philippians --- Philippians 2:1-5
We continue our series on Philippians. On a normal year, this would have been the day we left the Varsity and celebrated our community where it started: the Old Well. Graduation Sunday and Mother's Day usually brings Chapel Hill alive around us. As unfortunate as it is that we're once again joining each other on a screen today, we at least left the now-familiar scenes of our homes and took to the outdoors for this service. Even the Old Well makes an appearance!

  • Love Will Bridge the Distance
    Philippians --- Philippians 1:3-8
We begin a new series this week! We'll be looking at Paul's letter to the Philippians. What better book to turn to than one of love and encouragement to a church community while in isolation? Paul was in prison at this time. Like Paul, we're stuck apart from each other and uncertain about the future. Let his abounding love for his young church body be an example for you in your own communities. We're still a church. Love can bridge our distance.

    Spring 2020 --- John 20-24-29
We're proud to feature our guest speaker Adrianne Cleven today! Adrianne felt the personal calling preach to us long before the COVID crisis put us online. We honor her passion for the Word today, even when her sermon might not look quite like what we were all expecting.
