  • Waiting, Struggling, Praising
    Kingdom Tide --- Habakuk 1-3
We're thrilled to welcome our guest speaker Jenn Petersen from ResurrectionLife NYC and the International Justice Mission! She continues our series in the Prophets this week with the book of Habakuk.
What do you do when God seems silent? This has been a devastating year for so many. The question of "why" has likely been on the lips of thousands who lift their voices up in prayer. It can feel like God simply is not listening to a world in turmoil. Habakuk shows that questions and frustrations are valid aspects in how we engage with the Lord. We can yet be faithful in the waiting. Because we are never forsaken, even in times such as these.

  • Unity
    Kingdom Tide --- Ezekiel 37:1-10
As we've come to the end of an exhausting and often traumatic election year, we will take several opportunities this week to pause, pray, and reflect on the kind of national unity we are being called to shepherd. We also need to take Ezekiel's vision very seriously despite the fantastical imagery. Bodies brought to life by God were still hollow shells before the breath of the Word filled them. Calling ourselves united because we are Christians is a false surface-level unity. We have to do the work in breaking down what keeps us from loving one another and sharing the Gospel to others.

  • The Year of the Lord's Favor
    Kingdom Tide --- Isaiah 61:1-4, Luke 4:14-21
This week, we examine the prophesy of Isaiah, the most frequently quoted Prophet in the context of Christ's coming. We look forward to Luke as the Isaiah's words come alive in the person of Jesus Christ. There may not have been a true year of the Lord's Favor in the economic context of Jubilee. But Jesus's coming fulfills the words of Isaiah in a much bigger way! And we have all the bigger responsibility for it.

  • Bracketology
    Kingdom Tide --- Malachi 1:6, 3:14-15, 4:2
We're happy to have Pastor Marc Johnson from Life Church join us again for our message today! We continue our series in the prophets with Malachi, the figure in the last book of the Old Testament. God's final canonical words to the people before the Gospels 400 years later certainly sound harsh on the surface. But they show a deep caring for the hearts of those who fell into complacency following the return from exile. If we're give our least asking for God's most, what does that show about our hearts for the work of the Lord?

  • Creation
    Kingdom Tide --- Jeremiah 29:1, 4-14
Our series on the Old Testament Prophets continue with Jeremiah, known sometimes as the Weeping Prophet. While much of Jeremiah is lamentation at the state of Israel with warnings of the upcoming destruction of the Temple and exile into captivity, we're focusing on one of the few passages of hope that shine out of the chaos. When the Israelites no longer had a city, congregation, or home God commands God's people to grow and to plant. To echo the God of Creation in the land of their exile. God had plans to renew the Kingdom in more ways than one. During our own congregational exile in this last year, where can you plant your own seeds of prosperity? Both for yourself and for others?

  • Afraid of God's Grace
    Kingdom Tide --- Jonah 3:1-10
We continue our fall series on the Prophets by observing the ministry of Jonah. Most are familiar with the drama of Jonah's fleeing from his mission to Nineveh, particularly with the account of his brief residence in a giant fish. But let's focus on the motivations of Jonah's flight. It's not the Assyrians' reaction to him publicly denouncing their behavior that Jonah admits to fearing. He feared they would actually listen and God would show mercy to a people Jonah wanted to see punished. The revival in Nineveh doesn't begin with the repentance of the people. It begins with the repentance of Jonah. If we are to be the catalysts for revival that we desperately need, we too need to examine our own place in culture today and repent of the fallen ways that got us here.

  • Kingdom Culture - Love Chapel Hill's 11-Year Anniversary
    Kingdom Tide --- Daniel 6:10-23
Happy 11th Anniversary, Love Chapel Hill! As we move from a year of prayer despite disruption, we intend to make our next one of intentional planning for our future. What better narrative to begin our next year than with looking to Daniel, the prophet in exile? Here was a man who grew up with every facet of the Israelite culture under attack. And still he put his faith and trust in God even though he had the confidence of conquering king. Daniel never railed against, withdrew from, or assimilated the cultures of the Babylonians, Medes, or Persians. He engaged with his captors and became an integral part in the restoration of the Kingdom, culminating in the coming of the Son of Man.

  • Milk and Honey
    Kingdom Tide --- Judges 4:4-10, 17-24
This week we go to Judges and the story of the Israelite judge Deborah prior to the defeat of the Canaanite king Jabin. On the surface, it may seem like a strange narrative for a modern message but don't be fooled. Deborah is the example of the kind of leadership and faith God is calling women to have alongside, and even over, men. She knows that the character of God is to keep God's promises even in ways that might not seem obvious. The Lord will go before us, but the leaders of the church are being called to rise up. Especially in troubled times.

  • Poured Out
    Kingdom Tide --- Joel 2:13, 21-32
Today we reflect on the words of Joel. Joel has a wonderful vision on what the Day of the Lord is, when the Spirit will be poured out on every man and woman who calls on the name of the Lord. We know something of the day he looks forward to: Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit descended on the gathered crowds on the earliest days of the church. But know that the Day of the Lord continues and it is now! Joel's words ring true even today.

  • Righteousness and Justice
    Kingdom Tide --- Amos 5:21-24
What happens to faith that only worships itself? In Northern Israel, what looked like economic success and thriving Judaism hid something much darker. The rich were growing richer and the poor were poorer. Even worse, religious leaders had become the influential elite and their prosperity at the expense of the lower classes was seen as God's blessing. The king was at the heart of a moral decay in the nation, and his most successful prophets were sycophants who only reported God's support of the king to maintain their personal comfort and position. We're returning to the Old Testament this Fall for our new series, but it sure doesn't sound like we went BACK in time, does it?
Enter Amos. A fig farmer who God uses to remind God's people that sacrifice and songs to the alter of such hypocrisy repel God. God demands constant righteousness and justice from God's people. We are called to exercise a right relationship with our Lord and always between our fellows. How are you contributing to this Kingdom Tide?
