  • New Wine
    Matthew --- Matthew 9:14-17
Change is coming! We are officially regathering on May 23rd at the Forest Theatre, with COVID precautions in place! We will continue our virtual presence as well for those who, for any reason, are not ready to meet again in-person. We are so excited to be able to worship as a congregation in person again!
We also know that after more than a year of change that we've all experienced in many different ways, we cannot expect to return to how things were. Jesus had much to say about the transformation of the church and the people in it. New wine needs new vessels. Let this be a major opportunity for growth and renewal as we look to our future!

  • Eastertide - Burdens and Rest
    Matthew --- Matthew 11:28-30
Though Resurrection Sunday is behind us, it's still the Easter season. Until Pentecost, we are in the 50-day time known as Eastertide. It's a celebration of the Resurrection of Christ culminating in the birth of the Church when the Holy Spirit descends. And this week, we're talking about rest. The imagery of the yoke and service may not be the first that come to mind when thinking about rest. But Jesus speaks to the context of the day and the rich history of the Israelites. We learn that there's a kind of peace and freedom under the yoke of Christ that we could never find anywhere else on Earth.

  • Come and See, Go and Tell - Easter Sunday 2021
    Matthew --- Matthew 28:1-10
He is Risen! He is Risen indeed! The celebration and power of those words is not diminished, even though we are celebrating our second Easter virtually. We invite you to return to the tomb and feel the hope the women feel when they find it empty. Join us as Matthew's account comes full circle in a beautiful symmetry that began during Advent. Reflect on your own responsibility to spread the news. Proclaim the power of Christ to others because you have seen that even death has no victory!

  • Who Do You Say I Am? - Palm Sunday 2021
    Matthew --- Matthew 16:13-28, 17:1-9
It's Palm Sunday! Justin takes the pulpit as we kick off our second Holy Week in this digital format. We follow the Disciples as they begin to understand the enormity of the truth of the man they follow. Jesus is not a just a prophet. He is the Son of Man written about in the days of Daniel. He stands beside Moses and Elijah transfigured by the glory of Heaven. And the salvation he brings is not violence to the Romans on the behalf of one people. It is violence inflicted on him BY the Romans on behalf of ALL people. Jesus is so much more than his own closest followers could imagine. Who would you say Jesus is to you?

  • Five Stories for the Future
    Matthew --- Matthew 11-15
This week we're looking at a long section of Matthew with five major narratives. The death of John the Baptist, the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus's walk on the water and Peter's sinking, the Canaanite woman, and the feeding of the four thousand. What could be viewed as mostly unrelated stories instead shows the radical shift Jesus would bring to Israel and the world. It is a connected arc that marks the complete refocus on who would inherit the Kingdom Jesus is bringing to Earth.
And with mixed emotions, we also hear from Pastor April and her new season of service as she has heard the call to step away from the role of Family Life Pastor. We welcome you to send your support and gratitude to [email protected].

  • The Beatitudes in Action
    Matthew --- Matthew 5:3-12, 9
We enter into one of the more famous passages in Matthew where Jesus lists those who are deemed blessed in the Kingdom. Every trait feels almost entirely opposite of what being "blessed" in the world looks like. The poor, the meek, the insulted, the persecuted. These are the people who are first in the Kingdom. And later Jesus shows exactly what that looks like when he engages those people directly. What about your life have you counted as blessing? Does it resemble that which Jesus considers blessed?

  • What Do You Make of Jesus?
    Matthew --- Matthew 9:1-13
Now Jesus is really starting to get under the skin of the religious authorities. He claims to be able to forgive sin and on a Sabbath, no less. He dines with opportunist traitors to the Roman-occupied Jewish people. How could this be the foretold heir to David's throne if he bucks the Law every chance he gets? But Jesus is showing he is the fulfillment of Scripture, not the opposition to it. The texts that had been used weapons against the sinful are words of redemption from the mouth of the true Messiah.

  • Across the Lake
    Matthew --- Matthew 8:18-34
The cost of discipleship with Jesus is a constant theme in our reading of the Gospels. When curiosity it piqued and crowds of people come to see him, Jesus retreats across the lake. There is now an effort for those who would follow him. It's a journey into the unknown where storms can materialize and endanger your very life. But following Jesus is a chance to see that he has the ultimate power over that which would break you down. Of course, it also means that the same path leads to the cross. Would you step into the boat with Christ if you knew the cost too?

  • Contagious
    Matthew --- Matthew 8:1-17
Almost as soon as the Sermon on the Mount is complete, Matthew tells us that Jesus very quickly begins living the words that he preached. The poignancy of healing the leper is not lost on us as we approach a year of similar isolation and distance the poor man would have experienced. And instead of receiving the man's illness, the man actually received the redemptive holiness of Jesus. The calls to action from the Mount are radical and difficult. But the holiness of the Kingdom will spread to others in ways that conflict and hatred never could.

  • The Sermon on the Mount (Unabridged)
    Matthew --- Matthew 5-7
Our walk through Matthew has brought us to the Sermon of the mount. This week, we're doing something a little different. This will not be a sermon on the Sermon on the Mount. Today, we will be reading the Sermon on the Mount in its entirety. Prepare your hearts to hear the words of Jesus without the padding of a contemporary message. Be moved, be convicted, be disturbed.
Worship. Question. Think. Hope. Experience the words that brought revolution to the world.
