This week, the church celebrates the 500-year anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the door of All Saints' Church in Wittenburg, Germany. What better way to celebrate this moment than for the congregations of a Wesleyan, Methodist Episcopal, and Presbyterian church to worship together as a unified body of Christ? Despite the division and violence that would arise from this in the years to come, we celebrate and acknowledge the challenge of Luther's protest: That our hope for salvation lies in God and God's word and not in the clergy or your money.

In Dead Poets Society, Robin Williams' character John Keating encourages his students to "Carpe Diem;" seize the day. As Christians, we are called to recognize not only the time we have, but also the Divine Moment of radical change: Kairos. So Paul, even though in a jail cell, guided the influential Roman city of Ephesus into being one of the most important centers of the growing Church.

The Golden Age of Israel. David ushered it in as the nation's first king with God's favor. His son Solomon continues Israel's prosperity and constructs the Temple, the center of their faith. God gifts him with wisdom and asks for the new king's trust in return. But when he ruled from his own judgement and not God's own, his Songs of love turned into the bleak Ecclesiastes bemoaning the meaninglessness of wealth and possession. For all his wisdom, Solomon did not trust the Giver. Can you?

What does the story of Ishmael mean to you? When God tells Abraham that the decendents from an old infertile couple would outnumber the stars, his and Sarah's faith fail. Ishmael is born from a hasty arrangement between Abraham and a serving woman, Hagar. But are these two simply mistakes who get no provision and only make things awkward? No. God speaks to these outcasts, too. And God hears their cries. God's power is revealed in God's provision for the Israelites, but God's love is revealed in God's provision for Hagar and Ishmael.

During this series, we have examined the power of the Soundtrack of scripture: the voice of God. But Isaiah didn't just hear this voice. He encountered the presence of God, and his entire perception of holiness changed. Facing the magnitiude of God's glory, all he could respond was that yes, here he was. Send him. We've witnessed that same glory in the character of Jesus. How has that convicted you to live your life?

This week, we talk about the prophet Elijah. Few people in history have had such personal and intimate encounters with the voice of God. It would not be until the coming of Jesus that so many miracles were documented than during Elijah's time as prophet. He experienced the glory of God in the power of triumph over idols and the stillness of broken vulnerability. Which do you think had the greatest impact?

What kind of oppression do you feel today? It runs deeper than today's headlines. Personal, mental, physical, social, and other forms of oppression and pain assault us every day. What do the words of Jesus offer to those who hurt today and will continue to long after they hear them? Our own Bill Sterling, family counselor and leader of the LCH addiction recovery group, shares hope in the face of often brutal reality.

The soundtrack playing throughout scripture is the voice of God. Today we examine the origins of Samuel, the prophet who could hear the voice of God, because a leader to the Israelites, and would later annoint King David. He was the answer to his mother's fervent prayer and was commited to Temple from birth. And Samuel was able to affirm that commidment when he heard God calling him in the night. What responsibilities accompany God's calling in your own life?

Matt has returned from his sabattical! And not empty-handed either. Matt shares pictures and memories from the sites and locations in Israel where some of the most important events in the Bible took place. He comes with rocks from the Jordan, from the creek bed where David found the stones to slay Goliath, the mountain where he fled from Saul, and the hill where Jesus delivered his sermon on the mount. Then we take time to pray and reflect on the scripture from these areas.
