  • Encore: Koda’s Legacy Foundation—Supporting families in Washington state who are dealing with canine cancer

Today’s conversation with Emily Arias should come as welcome news for pet parents facing a cancer diagnosis. She shares the story of her beloved soul dog Koda, and how his diagnosis and eventual passing served as the inspiration for creating this 501c3 (non profit). Koda’s Legacy Foundation is here to help both financially and emotionally with dogs who have cancer. The statistics say 1 in 4 dogs will develop cancer in their lifetime. The expense can be huge. And this is where Koda’s Legacy Foundation can help.

To learn more about the foundation and how you can support their work, or if your dog has been diagnosed with cancer and you could use some help, visit www.kodaslegacyfoundation.org

  • Encore: Keshe Chow, Veterinarian and Best-Selling Author

Keshe Chow is a veterinarian in Australia who specializes in feline medicine. She just also happens to be a best-selling author. While her first books were geared toward a young adult audience her latest, “Strange Familiars”, is a “romantasy” about rival students of magical veterinary science. Keshe draws on her own experience as a real- world vet to inspire elements of “Strange Familiars”. Her own story, of going from being a child with no pets to her 7+ year journey to become a vet, is fascinating in and of itself and her new book is sure to intrigue and entertain while also offering insights to issues that face our world today. You can find her book wherever books are sold—in stores and online. Learn more about her, her work and her writing at www.keshechow.com

  • Encore: A Conversation with Dawn Ford, Development Director of Old Dog Haven

Old Dog Haven is a special, local organization (mainly Washington/Oregon) that helps senior dogs find caring “forever foster” homes where they can spend their last days (or months, or sometimes years!) living in comfort, peace, love, and having their medical needs met as well. Old Dog Haven recently celebrated their 20th anniversary (in 2024) and has events planned for this summer to celebrate old dogs and ALL dogs and their people.

  • encore: Saving the Sloths with an update for June 2026

An encore of our 'savings the sloths' episode with an update from Marilyn.

This past week (late April/early May 2026) we’ve seen numerous stories about sloths that were lost during what was supposed to be preparation for a new exhibit/destination in Florida called Sloth World. It came to light that many of the sloths died due to a combination of poor travel conditions, failure to keep a proper climate in their holding areas, and digestive upsets. This exhibit will now NOT be opening due to what has happened, and Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens is currently working ‘round the clock to save the remaining sloths. I want to encourage anyone who has a heart for these precious, magical little animals to visit one of the three websites shown here and learn more and even to donate if you are so inclined:  www.slothconservation.org     www.jaguarrescue.foundation   www.centralfloridazoo.org    Everything helps. Let’s support those helping our wildlife, and let’s also work to educate more people about the specific challenges some of these species are facing. Thank you!

  • Jenny Hubbard of the Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation

Catherine Violet Hubbard was a joyful, loving child who adored animals and all living creatures. And most of all, she wanted them to know that she was kind. When Catherine lost her life during the Sandy Hook tragedy of 2012, people donated to a local animal shelter in her memory and eventually the Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation was born. Their mission is to teach kindness and empathy, while helping animals find homes and making the planet more friendly for all living creatures. June 6th is Catherine’s birthday and the date of the 10th Annual Butterfly Party. During this event there will be rescue groups and other advocates on site, and animals will be available for adoption. Learn more about this event, how rescues across the nation will be honored, and about some of the many awards CVH Foundation has received for their messaging and their methods. Visit www.cvhfoundation.org where you can also find opportunities for donations and volunteering. This is a very worthy organization and if you have not yet heard of it, you will want to!

  • A Conversation with Beck’s Place founder Melanie Ryan

We welcomed returning guest Melanie Ryan for an update on the latest from Beck’s Place.  Beck's Place removes pet related barriers

to human health, safety, and security by providing safe and loving temporary foster care for pets who are in need due to situations such housing issues, health crises, and even domestic violence. Beck’s Place serves Snohomish County residents and can always use more help with temporary fosters (fosters can be located in other parts of the state if need be). Their Mobile Outreach program helps get food to pets whose families are having financial challenges. And, as of Spring 2026 a new fundraiser has been launched where, for just $49, you can provide one night of safety for a pet in need. Learn more about their ongoing work and this new program, along with volunteering opportunities, at www.becksplace.org

  • Researcher Mari Maeda from Canine Cancer Alliance

We are pleased to welcome returning guest Mari Maeda, who has been a scientific researcher for many years. W,hen she lost her 2 Golden Retrievers to cancer she was determined to see what she could do to help fund more clinical trials and open access to new treatments to more dogs. Thus Canine Cancer Alliance was born. If you or anyone you know has a dog with cancer and is not sure what options might be available outside of the more traditional treatments, please visit their website where you’ll learn more.  www.caninecanceralliance.org

They also have a special event coming up at Marymoor Park this COMING Sunday, May 3, 2026, with registration at 9 am and the event beginning at 10. You can also register online. If you are seeing this after that date you can still go to the website and find out how things went—AND learn how you can still contribute in other ways such as donating or volunteering. This is important, science-based work that will hopefully add many years to many dogs’ lives so please share with those people in your circles who will benefit.
