Old Dog Haven is a special, local organization (mainly Washington/Oregon) that helps senior dogs find caring “forever foster” homes where they can spend their last days (or months, or sometimes years!) living in comfort, peace, love, and having their medical needs met as well. Old Dog Haven recently celebrated their 20th anniversary (in 2024) and has events planned for this summer to celebrate old dogs and ALL dogs and their people.

  • A Conversation with Erica Ohrn

We had the pleasure today of speaking with Erica Ohrn, dog mama to a wonderful beagle, Radar, who also happens to be blind. Erica shared her story of how Radar came into her life, and how well he has adapted. He also has a brother who can see, Hawkeye, and who serves as a bit of a guide dog for him but that being, said Radar gets around amazingly well and loves living his life fully!

Erica has written a children’s book about Radar, called “Radar Finds Home”, available on Amazon. It’s well suited to kids 1-10 years old, is fully illustrated, and has a positive and hopeful message.

Radar also has his own Instagram page, called “Radar the Beagle”. And Erica also volunteers for Blind Dog Rescue Alliance, a group that helps blind and visually impaired dogs across the entire US. Find out more about this group, and learn how you might help, at www.blinddogrescue.org

  • Coaching for Clarity: A Conversation with Life Coach Aubrie De Clerck

We welcomed life coach Aubrey De Clerck for a special interview. Her focus is on helping people through times of transitions when the next steps might not be totally clear yet—marriage, divorce, loss of a loved one, new baby, financial or job shifts, and so many things that can affect our lives. Included in those kinds of changes is the loss of a beloved pet and we thought pet parents might also benefit from Aubrie’s wise words and years of expertise. • A Conversation with Brenda Maeder

We welcome back returning guest Brenda Maeder, who you might have heard before on our show. Brenda has a wonderful special needs dog, Jamie, who is living his very best and most loved life, in spite of being both blind and deaf. Today we talked a bit about things that go into making a solid decision about the best dog for you and your household—size, temperament, activity level, finances, and personal preferences. All these things should be considered when making that choice and weighing those options will help ensure that the you and your dog are a good fit—and will reduce the number who have to be rehomed, or even returned to the shelter. There are even quizzes you can take to help you make your best choice!

To learn more about Brenda’s work and about the topics we discussed, visit her Facebook page, “Jamie’s Journey”.

  • A Conversation with Heather Reichel of Pet Recovery Center

Heather is a long time animal lover and veterinary assistant. She saw a need for a facility that would offer a safe space for dogs, or any pets, recovering from surgery and needing round the clock care—perhaps hourly medications, bandage changing, and other services in those first, critical 3-5 days after surgery-- that a pet parent might not be able to manage without some help.

The Pet Recovery Center also works with reactive dogs. Some dogs are unable to stay in regular boarding facilities due to reactivity but Heather has a history of working with reactive pets and offers them a safe place to stay while their families are away.

The Pet Recovery Center is located in the Spanaway/Pierce County area but will accept pets from all over the region. To learn more, visit
