In this context, we aim to recount the story of a resilient, dignified, and activist couple: Martin Luther King and his wife, Coretta Scott King. A tale of segregation, courage, and hope. Coretta, a Woman of Commitment
Coretta was born in 1927 in Marion, Alabama. School was an inspiring place for Coretta from a young age. She became the lead soprano in the college choir. She also played the piano, trumpet, and excelled in school performances. She was an intelligent and highly creative young girl. Coretta's awakening as an activist occurred during her time at Yellowspring College, long before she met her future husband. She joined the NAACP, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. By the time she arrived in Boston, Coretta was thus an independent young woman, confident in herself and her convictions. Meeting a man was not part of her plans...
For Martin, it's about sharing humanity
In Boston, Martin Luther King Jr. is also far from home. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, 2 years after Coretta. Martin is a precocious and brilliant boy. At 18 years old, with his bachelor's degree in sociology in hand, Martin makes a decision: he will become a pastor. After careful consideration, the Church seems to him the most evident way to fulfill his deepest aspiration: to give meaning, to share humanity.
In 1951, he obtains his university degree in theology in Chester, Pennsylvania. He moves to Boston for his doctoral studies. One day, he asks a friend of his if she might have any girls to introduce him to on campus. She does have someone in mind...
