Love YA Like Crazy

In this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss Madeleine L'Engle's 1963 classic 'A Wrinkle in Time'. Among other things, we talk about death bats and Communism, and the lack of time travel in the books comes in for a certain amount of criticism. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! An automatically generated transcript can be found at https://www.popuparchive.com/collections/10441/items/141957 -- if you're interested in helping to improve it, then let us know.

In the next episode, we'll be discussing Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins, one of Carrie's favorite books.

Carrie and Jake read the new Harry Potter book/play, 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child', and they have thoughts! In this, our first (and possibly only) HOT TAKE SPECIAL, we let you know what they are.

There's definitely a lot of spoilers, so you might want to read the book first! We also struggle with technology (unfortunately, the audio quality of a big chunk of this episode is not up to our usual standards), have some feels, talk about 'It's A Wonderful Life', and make a feminist point about how hot Donna Reed is.

In the next episode, we'll be discussing Jesse Andrews's 2016 book 'The Haters'.

For this special bonus episode, Carrie and Jake are joined by Carrie's friend Sara to discuss the severely mediocre 2014 young adult movie 'Vampire Academy'.

Carrie's cat Shooby also has a brief cameo, in which he graphically expresses his opinion of the movie.

We talk about human cafetoriums, Carrie records an ASMR video for vampire victims, we warn about the dangers of flaming hounds, and at the end we recommend some actually good vampire-related media. We also talk about Vampire Academy's plot almost as much as its characters do, so, if you are concerned about spoilers, watch the movie before listening! (Or, alternatively, you can just watch the best scene in the movie.)

In the next episode, we'll revisit Philip Pullman's excellent 'His Dark Materials' series by reading book 2 in that series, 'The Subtle Knife'.

For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss 'Grasshopper Jungle', Andrew Smith's 2015 novel about the end of the world and the incredibly horny teenagers that help bring it about.

Also in this episode, we are attacked by cats, reveal our shameful Kurt Vonnegut-related secrets to each other, and talk about how awesome it would be to have a Lost-style Hatch to explore. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening!

We're going to release a bonus episode soon, in which we talk about a mediocre YA movie named 'Vampire Academy', and then, after that, we'll revisit Philip Pullman's excellent 'His Dark Materials' series by reading book 2 in that series, 'The Subtle Knife'.

We also pick robot names for ourselves, ponder the joys of being a kitchen lobster or a bus, and Jake ruins everything. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening!

In the next episode, we'll be discussing 'Grasshopper Jungle' by Andrew Smith, an apocalyptic coming of age story that captivated us both, even as it made both of us us deeply uncomfortable.

Also sometime soon, we plan to watch and comment on 2014's 'Vampire Academy'. You can see a trailer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9jbzFmBa8M .
