  • Live: How to make holidays and celebrations zero waste (with Carlyn Grebleski & Andrea Lunzer)
Whether you’re celebrating Easter or not, whether you’re in quarantine at the moment or not, many of us are looking forward to, or even longing to socialise and celebrate with others - holidays, parties, anniversaries, you name it! But how can we all make it through a holiday or celebration without generating a ton of trash - or even - go zero waste?
Guests are Carlyn Grebleski, a-year-in-a-jar expert and blogger of Less Waste World and Andrea Lunzer, founder and CEO of the packaging-free and organic produce grocery store Lunzers Maßgreißlerei.
In this episode of Love Zero Waste Live we’re talking about zero waste food, gifts, and travels - and the magic jar. Generating so little trash that you basically can fit it into a jam jar. • Live: How to start your local movement (with Melati Wijsen)
Any movement starts with you, yes you as an individual. We are change agents of our time and every big movement starts with one small step. On this first-ever live episode, you’ll learn more about how to mobilize and engage others for collective action.
Our guest is Melati Wijsen of Bye Bye Plastic Bags, an organisation founded in Indonesia, and in the meantime a global movement, with 50 teams all over the world, that is working towards a world with no plastic bags. In this episode Melati shares her story and concrete tips for other aspiring change agents. Melati and her sister Isabel Wijsen founded Bye Bye Plastic Bags back in 2013. Together with many supporters and partners, they have been working on the frontline, advocating an official ban on plastic bags in Bali. Last year, the official ban on single-use plastics (plastic bags, straws, and Styrofoam) was enforced by the Balinese government. And what’s more! Melati just launched YOUTHOPIA, a program for equipping youth with tools and skills to become the next generation of changemakers.

  • Season 3 coming your way! (with Malin Leth & Evelina Lundqvist)
Malin and Evelina here! We’re popping by to tell you that we’re working in season three of Love Zero Waste!
In our podcast, we talk to experts - entrepreneurs, designers, activists, and scientists - trying to drastically reduce the 2 billion tons of solid waste that humanity generates every year. These experts are working to break the link between economic growth and increased waste generation.
And mind you, that number of 2 billion tons per year is rapidly rising, and it’s impacting our health and economy, and polluting the oceans and lands. Without urgent action, the 2 billion tons of waste we humans generate every year, will increase by 70% on current levels by 2050.
We’ve created two seasons of Love Zero Waste and are now working on the third one.
On the show, we’re tackling the seemingly boring topics of waste and waste management. But we’re looking at it from a ZERO waste perspective. ZERO waste makes all the difference. Waste is a sign of system failure. ZERO waste is about designing out waste. Not by burning or burying it, not even by recycling it. But by removing it from the equation. Everything stays in the loop.
In season 3 we will dive deep into the topics of electronics, food and flames but also zero waste cities and what we can learn from imitating nature in design processes.
Now is the time to stop climate change. With Love Zero Waste we want to show that the only way we can do this - is together.
Season 3 is coming later this winter!

  • Introducing the 12 R of zero waste: Turning off the tap! (with Malin Leth & Evelina Lundqvist)
In this extra special episode, recorded after the Love Zero Waste online session at the Ellen McArthur Foundation Disruptive Innovation Festival, hosts Malin Leth and Evelina Lundqvist explain the 12 R of zero waste and explore new ideas and opportunities on how to tackle the system overload and create system change. In other words, turning off the tap!
What are the 12 R of zero waste? Many of you will already know reduce, reduce and recycle. But there’s more: remember, respect, refuse, return, refill, rot, repurpose, restore and repair! Let's take a closer look!
Mind you, this is not an attempt to define the concept of zero waste. The 12 R and the bullseye, which we talk about in the episode, featuring "remember" in the middle and "recycle" on the outer edge is a hands-on method to approach zero waste.
    * remember, respect, refuse, reduce, reduce, return, refill, rot, repurpose, restore, repair & recycle

  • No excuse for single-use (with AnneMarie Harant & Afreen Kamran)
We’re drowning in everyday single-use items - plastic and otherwise! Toothbrushes, medication and grocery packaging, straws, tampons, coffee-to-go cups, paper and plastic bags, stockings, newspapers… The list is never-ending.
In this episode, we’re meeting experts Annemarie Harant of Erdbeerwoche and Afreen Kamran of Eco.pal. Annemarie and Afreen are entrepreneurs working to educate and provide alternatives to single-use items on a large scale. Annemarie and Afreen share insights on fighting the habit to use and immediately dispose of everyday items, and what is being done through policy changes and mobilising youth to make a change.
Annemarie and Afreen are driven by strong numbers. They have both done surveys on human behavior and observed what items end up in the bin or being flushed down the toilet. Moreover, they share a passion for not only making a change for themselves but for the masses. Prepare to get inspired!
Also, Evelina and Malin reveal their own favorite single-use items. Could all single-use items be swapped for multiple-use? Perhaps. At least if you have an ear-scratching affinity...

  • Building zero waste (with the winning teams of Denmark’s Circular Construction Challenge)
As the world’s population grows and urbanization is on the rise, we continue to build and generate massive amounts of waste. Globally, more than 2 billion tons of solid waste is generated every year. And don’t fall off your chair now. About half of this comes from building materials. Steel, concrete, wood, you name it. Is zero waste in the building and construction industry even possible!? Now - or in the future!?
In 2018, the Danish philanthropic association Realdania launched the “Circular Construction Challenge” to kickstart the circular transition in the building industry. In this episode, Malin meets up with the three winning teams of the challenge in Copenhagen to hear more about their work and how they will create change. The winning teams are represented by experts Niels Jakubiak Andersen from ReSkur, Maria Ekblad from Gentrae, Hanne Tine Ring Hansen and Jon Wedersøe Strunge from Waste to biomaterial.
When 3D-printing becomes mainstream, and mycelium grown construction is tomorrow - then what will we see in the future? Wait a minute! Building houses...using funghi? This is science fiction! Evelina admits she’s a StarTrek fan and sees the connection with their use of the mycelial network. This is not the same thing, right? Also, the concept of regenerative buildings and our cultural connection to buildings captures our imagination.

  • The magic of composting (with Hana Nur Auliana, Alfred Grand & Ben Conard)
We’re taking a closer look at composting! Did you know that the transformation from biomass to humus soil is key to survival on earth? Since very few plants can grow without humus, we’re dependent on it. Let's dig into the science, business and awareness building of composting!
In this episode, Evelina pays a visit to Alfred Grand, founder of Vermigrand, an earthworm compost and humus business in Austria. Malin meets up with Hana Nur Auliana, growth hacker of Waste4Change, a compost, recycling and consulting company in Indonesia. Moreover, we chat to Ben Conard, marketing director of Noissue a compostable mailer business in New Zealand.
Alfred explains how composting works, he dives into hot and cold options, the commercial production of Vermigrand’s organic humus soil, and all the ways to keep earthworms happy and eager to do their work. Hana talks about Waste4Change’s programs “Send Your Waste” and “Zero Waste to Landfill”, and the efficiency of the Indonesian black soldier fly. Ben shares Noissue’s insights on composting as an incremental part of your business model and enabling for businesses and end-consumers to make environmentally sustainable choices.
All in all, this is an episode celebrating not only earthworms and black soldier flies - but the critical change small and medium-sized business can contribute to! Oh, and by the “magic of composting”, we mean the science and biology of composting, it’s just so cool, we couldn’t help ourselves. This certainly is magical!

  • The change BIG MONEY can accomplish (with Reynir Indahl & Matthew Demorais)
In this episode, we're focusing on the role of investors and corporations in the zero waste movement - on BIG money. Reynir Indahl, founder and managing director at Summa Equity and Matthew Demorais, working with Global External Affairs at Sustainable Packaging of Unilever are guest in this episode.
Investors and corporations contribute to the zero waste vision by trying to figure out how they can serve the market better, how they can earn more money, develop new products and services, push for new policies and much more. But what triggers change among the big players? How do they envision a zero waste society, and what are the concrete steps they’re currently taking?
Reynir Indahl and Matthew Demorais share their insights on large-scale zero waste change processes and disruptions and the importance of co-creation and collaboration. Moreover, Reynir and Matthew share their own personal motivation for contributing to zero waste. Evelina and Malin discuss if system change doesn’t come down to a handful of people anyway…

About Love Zero Waste

From the publisher's feed

We're obsessed with zero waste solutions! Hosts Malin Leth and Evelina Lundqvist explore the latest zero waste and circular economy developments. We examine business models, innovations and trends. We talk to leading activists, entrepreneurs, educators, designers, policymakers and scientists, working on solutions across the planet, to create large-scale change for a truly circular, zero waste future. We aim to inspire and educate business to take responsibility, close the loop and help change the fact that two-thirds of all raw materials put into the global economy every year end up as waste.
