  • Plastics revolutionised life and is now destroying the planet (with Maggie Lee and Anders Ankarlid)
We’re back! This is episode six, the first episode of season two of the Love Zero Waste podcast: “How plastics revolutionised our lives and are now destroying the planet”. Experts in this episode are Maggie Lee, Lead of Market Transformation at WWF Singapore and Anders Ankarlid, founder of A Good Company.
Plastics, plastic pollution, renewable plastic substitutes are hot topics at the moment. So what better topic to kick off the season with than plastics!? Plastics have revolutionised our lives in so many ways. It’s created significant improvements in hygiene, health care, transportation, packaging food and beverages, and so much more. However, there’s a backside to plastics. We’ve all seen the photos of dead or even desiccated animals with bellies full of plastics. Plastics are everywhere, and the consequences are devastating.
This episode’s experts Maggie Lee, Lead of Market Transformation at WWF Singapore and Anders Ankarlid, founder of A Good Company help us understand why some businesses are hesitant to join in the effort to switch to sustainable alternatives to plastics, cases when businesses have tried to do good - but actually made things worse, what some of the real and working solutions to remove plastics are, and that stone paper is actually a thing (!). Also, Evelina gets annoyed at the people who keep obsessing about the focus on straws. Let’s dive in!
Oh, and apart from kicking off season two, we have another cause for celebration.
Since we released the first episodes of Love Zero Waste in January, we’ve had 8000 unique listeners across the different podcast platforms: Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast etc. For us, that’s big! Thank you so much for listening, and for sending us encouraging messages.

  • Season 1 wrap-up (with Malin Leth & Evelina Lundqvist)
That’s a wrap on season one of the Love Zero Waste podcast. Malin and Evelina meet up to discuss and share their impressions from the first season and summarize the three key factors that are most important for creating a zero waste society. However, they are not sure of…. the last one? What would you add?
Moreover, Evelina shares her feeling of a stomach ache because the waste problem is so big and Malin has been busy trying to grasp the enormous amount of trash that we humans generate every year. Finding the best equivalent for two billion tonnes of waste is not easy though. After calculating soccer fields and blue whales, she ends up with the classic example of ship containers. But does that make it easier to understand? Either way, a systematic shift is needed.
Throughout season one we met with scientists, activists, entrepreneurs, policymakers and other change agents to learn more about their insights in five episodes:
    1) Waste Management for Dummies with Anna-Carin Gripwall of Avfallsverige and Jochen Pach of Holding Graz
    2) The Game Changer (this is Zero Waste) with Elin Bergman of WWF and Paul Ekins of UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources
    3) Leading change (at the intersection of waste management and zero waste) with Libby Peake of Green Alliance UK and Rustan Nilsson of Sysav
    4) A-year-of-a-trash-in-a-jar and the packaging free grocery store with Carlyn Grebleski of Less waste world and Sarah Reindl of Das Gramm
    5) From fast fashion to accountability with Alexandra Poetz of The Good Tribe, Anna Lidström of Another Studio and Birgitta Helmersson of Helgrose Studio.

  • A-year-of-trash-in-a-jar and the packaging-free grocery store (with Sarah Reindl & Carlyn Grebleski)
In this episode, you’ll meet two experts on how to live a zero waste lifestyle. Carlyn Grebleski of Less Waste World has been putting her trash in a jar for more than one and a half year and Sarah Reindl has opened two packaging free grocery store, Das Gramm and Das Dekagramm.
When you Google Zero Waste, or perhaps even more so, when you check it out on social media, the zero waste community manifests itself through lifestyle blogs, DIY guides, upcycling ideas, suggestions for avoiding food waste, food packaging and plastic bags and bottles. A large portion of the attention point in the direction of single individuals - of citizens. So this is what we’re taking a closer look at in this episode: The responsibility of the individual. And we’re doing so through the lens of two phenomena that have become almost synonymous with the zero waste movement - putting your entire years’ waste in a glass jar - and the plastic packaging free supermarket.

  • Leading change (with Libby Peake & Rustan Nilsson)
Two billion tonnes of municipal solid waste generated annually. The numbers keep rising, and the current narrow focus on recycling does next to nothing to change that. Enter: Waste reduction and minimisation and our new friend Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
Listen to interviews with Libby Peake, senior policy adviser at Green Alliance, in London and Rustan Nilsson, environmental educator of SYSAV, a waste management facility in Malmö, Sweden. Your humble hosts: Malin Leth and Evelina Lundqvist.
In this episode of Love Zero Waste you’ll learn more about creating and leading change at the policy, as well as citizen level. We’re diving deeper into the possibilities of drastically reducing waste through shifting the responsibility from consumers to designers and manufacturers, of cutting out all single-use items (not just those made out of plastics!) and through creating stricter laws and shifting how we think about waste and all the stuff we surround ourselves with.

  • The game changer (with Paul Ekins & Elin Bergman)
Zero Waste is radical. It changes everything. In this episode, you'll learn more about how cities, policymakers, businesses and private citizens can help change the game and create a zero waste society - way sooner than you think. We take a look at Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), why so many choose to focus on the responsibilities of consumers when business generate so much more trash and the innate powers of civil society.
Listen to interviews with our experts: Paul Ekins, professor of Resources and Environmental policy, of UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources and Elin Bergman, Manager of Corporate Partnerships, of World Wide Fund for Nature and Wildlife (WWF).

About Love Zero Waste

From the publisher's feed

We're obsessed with zero waste solutions! Hosts Malin Leth and Evelina Lundqvist explore the latest zero waste and circular economy developments. We examine business models, innovations and trends. We talk to leading activists, entrepreneurs, educators, designers, policymakers and scientists, working on solutions across the planet, to create large-scale change for a truly circular, zero waste future. We aim to inspire and educate business to take responsibility, close the loop and help change the fact that two-thirds of all raw materials put into the global economy every year end up as waste.
