Welcome to Episode 28!
Today's guest is Mindy Vincent.
Mindy is an addiction therapist and social worker; she is the host of the podcast "Therapeutic Madness"; and she is the founder of Utah Harm Reduction Coalition.
Mindy spoke with host Zach Rhoads about her history with drug addiction, and how she became a harm reduction practitioner and advocate.
Sadly, Mindy's sister died of a drug overdose in 2014. As if that weren't enough, her brother was also using drugs destructively at the time. At that time, Mindy had already overcome her own addiction, and she believed that traditional treatment models were the recovery gold-standard. But she noticed that her brother wasn't responsive to such ideas. So she temporarily abandoned her training in 12-steps and recovery programs, and did what was commonsensical-- she showed her brother unconditional love and always kept an open line of communication with him.
She didn't know it at the time, but she was practicing harm reduction (something that she learned about and became immersed in later on).
Happily, both Mindy and her brother are living their best non-addicted lives and Mindy has established herself as an entrepreneur, a professional, and a highly regarded leader in the harm reduction field.

Welcome to Episode 26!
On today's program, Zach Rhoads speaks with Daniel Snyder.
Daniel Snyder lives in Langley, British Columbia where he is a project and peer coordinator at Langley Overdose Response. He is also the founding creator of Mindful Hope, a hub of resources regarding harm reduction and sensible drug policy.
Daniel Snyder also overcame a heroin addiction which lasted 15 years. It was only after attending, being perplexed by, and "failing" at 12-step recovery programs that he found SMART Recovery. He is now living his best life, and does not consider himself "in recovery" -- a term that he broadly respects, but which he rejects as a descriptor of his own life experience.

Today, Zach speaks with Editor in Chief of Filter Magazine, Will Godfrey.
Filter is an online publication whose mission is to advocate, through journalism, for rational and compassionate approaches to drug use, drug policy and human rights. So Will has plenty to say about the harm reduction concept.
Today Will and I talk about his best definition of harm reduction and why he believes that it is a meaningful and practical concept. And I do take him at his word since he’s created a career centered around the harm reduction concept.
The excerpt you are about to hear is taken from a long-form conversation I had with Will in my podcast The Social Exchange. You can listen to the full episode here: https://thesocialexchange.libsyn.com/episode-43-will-godfrey-filter-magazine
I hope that you’ve enjoyed all that we’ve had to say about harm reduction this month. We'll see you next week!

Welcome to episode 24!
Today's episode is also part three of our four-part series about harm reduction. Zach and Stanton discuss several domains in which harm reduction can be useful:
- Addiction
- Policing
- Public health
- Working with children
And more. . .
And they hone in on the fact that harm reduction is based on improvement rather than only perfection. A quote from the episode:
"Harm reduction means getting on the right track for improvement so that we see benefits in the short-run. Maybe we won't reach Nirvana right away, but we're gong to move in that direction. . . "
Enjoy the show!

Welcome to episode 23!
This is episode #2 of a four-part series about Harm Reduction.
Last week, Stanton and Zach discussed the history of harm reduction for addiction. That episode is here:
In today's episode, Stanton wraps up his telling of Harm Reduction History and then talks about harm reduction's evolution, as a concept, into two incompatible ways of thinking:
There is "harm reduction" as the Life Process Program defines it; and then there's another way of thinking about harm-reduction-- namely, that "harm reduction = non-abstinence." Stanton and Zach make a clear distinction between the two.

Today you’ll hear an excerpt from my long-form discussion with Dr. Sandy Steingard. Sandy is a psychiatrist and the chief medical officer of a statewide non-profit organization in Vermont called The Howard Center.
She is also a blogger for Robert Whitaker’s online Magazine called “Mad in America” and she’s the author of a book called “Critical Psychiatry.” I sat in-person with Sandy and spoke with her for a few hours about why she is critical of psychiatry— her own field. And how she reconciles this with her role, not only as a psychiatrist, but as the chief medical officer of an organization that addresses mental health statewide.
In today's 30-minute excerpt, Sandy and I talk about psychiatric drugs and their potential to bring both utility and harm to person’s life. And we talk about how, why, and when she became skeptical of psychiatric drugs to solve overall life-problems.
Most importantly, she talks about the way in which she believes clinical work should happen: client-centered conversations; asking a person what’s going on in his or her life; helping them make sense of their problems in the context the other domains of life (things which seem commonsensical but get lost in the-- well, "madness" of day-to-day psychiatric practice).
She makes a distinction between being the kind of a psychiatrist who says, I’m the doctor, and I know just how to fix you, and being a psychiatrist who lets her client inform both the discussion and the work.
Enjoy this excerpt of my conversation with Dr. Standy Steingard!

Today you’ll get a sneak-peak from a long-form conversation I had with Dr. Robert Schwebel. Robert Schwebel is a psychologist, author, and the creator of a non 12-step program called “Seven Challenges”
Dr. Schwebel's "Seven Challenges" are a practical guide for people, young and old, to really understand their relationship with drugs and alcohol and whether they're happy with that relationship or not.
Dr. Schwebel says that-- to the extent that people decide (for themselves) that they have a problem with drugs or alcohol-- not only are the NOT powerless (as AA and other 12-step programs might have them believe) but that they have complete agency to choose the life that they want, and decide how to move away from destructive behavior and towards an overall balanced and good life.
