Part One explores redlining, racial covenants, and other racist legal practices that have sustained segregation, focusing on Chicago while recognizing their nationwide impact. Featured conversations include Ghian Foreman, President and CEO of the Emerald South Economic Development Collaborative, and journalist Natalie Y. Moore, author of The South Side: A Portrait of Chicago and American Segregation. The program includes a reading of Affirmation by Assata Shakur, an excerpt from Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, and music by Jamie Branch, Otis Brown, Mike Reed, and Tomeka Reid.
Part Two continues the conversation with photographer and social justice artist Tonika Johnson, co-founder of the Englewood Arts Collective and Resident Association of Greater Englewood. It also features June Jordan reading “Requiem for the Champ” from Technical Difficulties, an excerpt from A Raisin in the Sun, and music by Nicole Mitchell and Erwin Helfer.
