Minimalism, what do you know on the design movement that I love more than other?
Minimalism is a movement that can push you in finding freedom. Freedom from fear. Freedom from worry. Freedom from guilt. Freedom from the trappings of the consumer culture we’ve built our lives around. Minimalism allows you to make these decisions more consciously. It is a sort of purification street to turn on the light on the things and values very important and necessary of your life. This process influenced architecture and design: we assisted a transformation to the beauty concept. More geometrical, more pure, more ordered, more symmetrical space. The general rules of Design was rewritten by this sentences of german architect Mies Van the rohe “Less is more”. it is meaning that when you choose less things, less decorations, less colors and materials, for sure you will realize the best design where you can live better, more focused on the meaning of your life.

Today there is the new episode of Federico Babina on Instagram Domus. The video is focused on Japan. The music is Japanese. the architectural elements create the portrait of a gesha. the typical red circle of the Japanese flag blends into the cubes of the Capsule Tower. The Nagakin Capsule Tower is the symbol of Metabolism, one of the last architectural japanese movements. In one building we can see all the main points of the moviment:
-the passion for the towers
-the house concept as a combination of prefabricated capsule where the private life is protected
-the project has be linked to the technology because they are togheter the example of human power
the metabolism borns from this strong union between human being, the technology and the space. the architect work is the metabolism of all these elements to create a new future.

Arata Isozaki is the architect who will win this year the most important
architectural award, it is the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
He is Japanese and he will receive it in may at the wonderful Versailes
Palace in France.

What is his personal motivation to make design projects?

After the atomic bomb, his Japanese world suddenly changed and it become a landscape of refuges. This strong change of his country brought him closer to architecture: from that moment he tried to understand how people could rebuild their homes and cities.
This personal research is clearly visible in his projects infact he is able to move his projects between Occidental and Oriental culture, between global and local design language at the same time.
In Italy there is his amazing last project: the pure and elegant Allianz Citylife Tower.

Brutalism ... What do you think if I say Brutalism?
Brutalism is an architectural movement where simple and functional forms are the musthave.
on Domus The collage of Babina tells the Trellick tower. The english tower called tower of terror has essential geometric shapes, and it is made with the main important material of the architectural movement, the raw concrete. Stairs, elevators and pumbing are separated from the apartments in a service tower : this action allows a significant economic saving as well as a visual lightening of the building. and what s about Italy? In Milan there is an another great brutalist example, the Velasca tower.
