  • Lust and Hell
The sermon addresses the root of sin by examining Jesus' teaching in Matthew 5 that lustful intent constitutes adultery in the heart. It defines lust as an evil desire that rebels against God's will, distinguishing between neutral desires and those hijacked by sin. The speaker emphasizes the reality of hell and the serious consequences of unrepentant sin to urge immediate spiritual vigilance. A practical battle plan is offered, focusing on setting one's mind on heavenly things and putting on godly virtues like love and humility. Ultimately, believers are called to actively pursue what is good and pure, allowing God's word to dwell richly within them to overcome earthly cravings.

  • From the Fullness of God to the Overflow of Mutual Covenant Obligations
Ephesians Series, Message 35 "From the Fullness of God to the Overflow of Mutual Covenant Obligations: The Church Living Out of the Fullness of the Glory of God in Christ" Ephesians 4:31-5:2 17This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, 18having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; 19who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20But you have not so learned Christ, 21if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. 25Therefore, putting away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor," for we are members of one another. 26"Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27nor give place to the devil. 28Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. 29Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all m

  • (8) The Danger of Pride and the Beauty of Humility
The Christian life is filled with paradoxes—apparent contradictions. To live you must die (Matt. 10:39). The last shall be first (Matt. 20:16). Here's another one: To be exalted you must humble yourself. These statements don't seem like they could be right; they go against what feels natural to us. But such paradoxes must be true since they are backed by the authority of God. James 4:6 is one of the great texts of the Bible: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." We should memorize it and use it as a motto that guides our decisions and encourages us with the prospect of great reward. This divine motto presupposes a serious problem, prescribes a difficult duty, and promises a great blessing.

  • The Mindset of Christ
This sermon exhorts believers to adopt the mindset of Christ, characterized by a willingness to suffer for righteousness and to love others unconditionally. Drawing primarily from 1 Peter, the message emphasizes sanctifying the Lord in one's heart and maintaining a clean conscience when facing persecution or social pressure. It contrasts the will of God with the lusts of the world, illustrating how past sins are forgiven through Christ's sacrifice while urging Christians to live holy lives in anticipation of final judgment. The preacher highlights that enduring suffering for doing good frees individuals from the power of sin and aligns them with God's purpose. Ultimately, the central call is to prioritize pleasing God over societal acceptance, demonstrating love even to those who are difficult or hostile.
