There are a lot of spooky creepy books out now in 'Augtober' and even more once the leaves threaten to turn. September holds many reading possibilities so here are 16 to start choosing from…
This is the story of a girl who was not that good at youtube, and when she was bad, she was horrid...
Not long ago I picked up The Boris Karloff Horror Anthology which is a 1960s book put out by souvenir press. The book as advertised contains horror stories of the time chosen by Boris Karloff of horror movie fame. Aside from two outliers most of the stories range from the early 1930s to the late 1950s and of course includes an earlier tale by HP Lovecraft entitled The Haunter of the dark and an Edgar Allan Poe story entitled The Cask of Amontillado.
A quick reading update wherein I go from taking a pew, so to speak, in The Night Church and jump into a missing person case to those who make people go missing on the Scottish Moors with Guy N. Smith!
Not a normal video for me but a good time to take stock of my favourites so far, and what is to come. I like using tag videos for a guided discussion on books. Like a very focused speed bookclub for one!
True crime is the most graphic of horror - yet graphic novels are one of the most balanced ways to tell these stories. Perhaps it is the constraints to the page, or the smaller amount of text for lurid details, and in the few book I talk about today the limited palette of colours; often black and white.
Withered is a young adult hometown horror novel by Canadian author A.G.A Wilmot. The cover and summary of this book sounded so perfect to me! I checked to see if it was YA but it seemed to be a straight-up haunted house, haunted town, haunted past coming-of-age horror so I was sold. Lots of horror stories involving kids, teens, or coming of age aren't YA books so I figured this would be a fit. When ECW asked if I wanted a review copy, I jumped on it, so thank you ECW!
This is a very small horror book haul featuring the Boris Karloff Horror Anthology, Dead and Buried by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Fountain Society by Wes Craven, and The Worm and his Kings by Hailey Piper… with a special unboxing of D.L. Tillery's new poetry collection Thorns of My Heart.
What is my style of booktube? A booktube identity, as it were. A really good question to which I ask: is horror a style? I mean, on the surface level you could say there is a horror aesthetic that many fans embrace, and skulls often find their place in our decor. Horror novels and being a horror reader may not, however, be as obvious - especially when our bookshelves when only containing books look a lot like any other genre fan.
Twenty-seven books are coming out or are out already!
