What happens when Denise Richards, middle school drama, cheesy nursery rhymes and loads of California cool collide in a plaid porno mansion? Valentine (2001), a too-cool-for-school adaptation of a 1999 whodunit thriller by Tom Savage. It's got all the beats of a '90s slasher -- think Scream, Urban Legend and I Know What You Did Last Summer -- with none of the teeth. But does it REALLY deserve a 9% on Rotten Tomatoes?

For this episode, we get in the Christmas spirit with Rare Exports (2010): a modern fable of Santa Claus, evil Americans and kids who believe in fairy tales, with more old-man nudity than anything this side of fetish porn. It’s one of the weirder films we’ve reviewed and by far the weirdest Christmas film you’ve ever seen (yes, even stranger than The Gingerdead Man... and way better). It’s got Dracula, Godzilla, Shaun of the Dead and Die Hard in its DNA, plus subtitles for those of you who don’t speak the tongue of Lapland’s native people, the Saami.

Let’s give this wild, strange and inventive Christmas fable the Macabre Bros treatment!

In this episode, we go xenomorph huntin' with Ripley, Jonesy and the doomed Nostromo crew from the original Alien (1979), plus talk about loving and loathing DVD commentary.

It's been nearly 40 years and the hook remains classic: blue-collar "truckers in space" discover a signal of unknown origin on a godforsaken planet, where they enter an abandoned vessel filled with leathery eggs and psycho-sexual architecture. One horror leads to another, all leading to a fateful night at the Nostromo dinner table.

The opening act of Alien is so simple, so straightforward, that it's become a sci-fi trope. Never mind the fact The Thing from Outer Space launched the pulpy "strangers among us" sub-genre in 1951 -- Ridley Scott's take on B-move monsters from outer space is hailed today for pacing, performance and gorgeous cinematography.

But it wasn't so loved in '79. Star Wars: A New Hope came out a year earlier and Luke Skywalker fanboys weren't ready to shit their pants at a sci-fi flick. The New York Times called it a cheap cash-in. Weaver and Scott were nobodies. How does the original hold up?

The 2018 release features the return of Jaime Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, now a tough-as-nails grandma living to kill her nemesis, plus creator John Carpenter with a new score and Dr. Loomis 2.0 (aka Dr. Sartain). It's a brutal, post-modern take on the concept that made the 1978 original a classic -- pure evil haunting suburbia on Halloween -- with updated rythms and violence to satisfy a modern audience. Raise a pint to Mikey... then run like hell!
