This morning (3/11/22), in our "Machshavah Lab" series for women, we continued our quest to answer the question, "How should we relate to Rabbinic laws vs. Torah laws?" Last week we focused on the question: "How can the Ran say that the main reward for Torah is from the Rabbinic laws?" Last week we discussed the Ran's statement that because Klal Yisrael "voluntarily" accepted Rabbinic mitzvos upon themselves, then they deserve greater reward. The Ran anticipates the reader's objection: "Don't we hold that doing a mitzvah you're obligated to do gives you more reward than a mitzvah that you do voluntarily?" He gives three answers, the first of which was the focus of this morning's shiur.

This evening (3/9/22), in lieu of our usual "Chumash Exploration," we continued our Purim topic from last week. After reviewing our facts and questions, I shared my partially-developed-but-still-incomplete approach, which was based on the Abravanel's commentary on Daniel. We ended up developing this into an idea which we felt explained around 90% of the midrash, but didn't QUITE feel complete. The good news is that we emerged with a deeper insight into one of the major themes of Purim, as we had hoped. The other good news is that we have a nice problem to think about in the days leading up to Purim!

This morning (3/4/22), in our "Machshavah Lab" series for women, we continued our quest to answer the question, "How should we relate to Rabbinic laws vs. Torah laws?" After an extensive review of Part 1, which included some new points and clarifications, we moved into the "initial answer" phase to the question: "How can the Ran say that the main reward for Torah is from the Rabbinic laws?" We gave our own answers and then learned his. Two objections were raised to his answer, one of which we addressed ourselves and the other of which will be addressed by the Ran himself in Part 3 (בג"ה).

This evening (3/2/22), in lieu of our usual "Chumash Exploration," we decided to take up a Purim topic. The midrash in Megilah 12a deals with the question of why the Jews at the time of the Purim story (seemingly) liable for destruction. The answer takes us back to an event recorded in Sefer Daniel. The midrash is perplexing in a number of ways, but since it promises to shed light on the entire Purim salvation, I've long desired to understand its meaning and implications. Tonight we went through all the facts and raised the question. Next week (בג"ה) I hope we will discover answers.

This morning (2/25/22), in our "Machshavah Lab" series for women, we began a new topic, prompted by the following question that was sent to me: "What is the impetus for one to follow Halachos d'Rabbanan? When I am sitting alone at night in the privacy of my home, what should motivate me not to eat chicken with cheese?" In today's shiur, Part 1 of the series, we laid the groundwork by reviewing, on a factual level, the scope and nature of Rabbinic authority. We then read what will be the central source for Part 2: the Ran's bold take on a baffling midrash riffing off an unusual mishnah commenting on a mysterious pasuk from a cryptic sefer of Tanach which raises a perplexing question. Next we will learn the Ran's explanation in an effort to answer our original question.

This evening (2/23/22), in our aptly named "Chumash Exploration," we continued learning the Sefer ha'Chinuch's introduction to Mikdash. After reviewing what we covered last time, we learned the Sefer ha'Chinuch's explanation of Seir l'Azazel, which we compared and contrasted with the Rambam's in the Moreh ha'Nevuchim, and with the Sefer ha'Chinuch's explanation of the Avodas Yom ha'Kippurim. Although there's more left in this mitzvah, we're most likely going to move on to something else next week. I encourage you to finish it on your own!

The full title of this YBT Sunday Shiur (given on 2/20/22) is "Midrashic Embellishment: Why Did Chazal Villainize 'the Bad Guys' and Vindicate 'the Good Guys' and What are the Educational Implications for Us?" It is a sequel to the shiur I gave on 4/18/21 entitled: "Midrashic Betrayal: the Detrimental Effects of the Failure to Distinguish Between Pshat and Drash." You are advised to watch (or, bedieved, listen to) that shiur before this one.
Chazal criticize those who say that David, Reuven, Shlomo, and other tzadikim sinned, but the pesukim paint a very different picture. Likewise, Chazal ascribe all sorts of villainy to Eisav, Bilaam, Dasan and Aviram, and other reshaim, but if we were to assess these people based on their portrayal in the pesukim, we would come away with a very different picture. In this shiur we discuss two theories as to why Chazal "embellished" the narratives in Torah she'bi'Chsav, and we consider the implications of using these methods in modern day Jewish education.

This morning (2/18/22), in our "Machshavah Lab" series for women, we concluded our multi-part series on R' Akiva's loaded-with-fundamental-ideas-about-human-existence statement in Pirkei Avos. After reviewing ALL the facts and ideas from Parts 1 and 2 and learning Chazal's statements about erech apayim which were cited by the Rambam, we arrived at The Main Idea: a new way of viewing human existence which has a practical impact on how we live and how we perceive Hashem's judgment.

After reviewing the facts from last time, we delved into one of the deepest sections of the Rambam's Shemoneh Perakim, which dealt with free will and the classic tension between God's Omniscience and human choice. I had intended to finish the "setup" today, but the topics we discussed have a way of drawing us in. Next time we'll focus on what I hope will be the third and final setup session before attempt to unlock the paradigm-shifting ideas in R' Akiva's statement.

This evening (2/9/22), in our aptly named "Chumash Exploration," we continued learning the Sefer ha'Chinuch's introduction to Mikdash. Tonight we learned his radical explanation of what it means to say that the shechinah (divine presence) is in the Mikdash. After that we learned the three pshat explanations he gives for how korbanos work. I promised you that he would provide us with an overview of the most fundamental concepts of Mikdash, and he certainly delivered!
