MacVoices Video

Jackie Dove always keeps a close eye on the photo and video application market from both the consumer and professional perspectives. She joins us to talk about why iMovie recently came out on top in an evaluation of consumer video apps, how the new Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 holds up against some its newer, younger competitors, and how artificial intelligence and machine learning are affecting how we all take and edit our photos.

The holiday shopping season is closing in on us fast. To help get you started and take some pressure off, the first of our Holiday gift guide shows is here! The suggestions range from Apple products to things not related at all to Apple, geeky to mainstream, and services to software. The panel of Jeff Butts, Mark Fuccio, Kelly Guimont and host Chuck Joiner covers it all, along with some money-saving tips that are good year-round.

Kelly Guimont is a longtime Apple geek, sitting down (on a telephone book) in front of an Apple IIe in 1983. She can still hear the ticking of the ImageWriter. Thanks to the miracle of the adjustable leg desk, she no longer needs the phonebook. Kelly writes for The Mac Observer, is co-host of The Aftershow, makes regular appearances on the Daily Observations Podcast and the British Tech Network and yet still has more to say which she saves for Twitter.

Mark Fuccio is actively involved in high tech startup companies, both as a principle at piqsure.com, or as an marketing advisor through his consulting practice Tactics Sells High Tech, Inc. Mark was a proud investor in Microsoft from the mid-1990's selling in mid 2000, and hopes one day that MSFT will be again an attractive investment. You can contact Mark through his web site or through Twitter.

Jeff Butts was a nerd long before they got their revenge. He’s been voiding warranties since the early 1980s, when he took apart his uncle’s 286 to try coaxing a bit more power out of the Hercules graphics controller. Either by luck or skill (or both), nobody ever knows he’s voided their warranty because Jeff knows and lives by the most important rule: don’t get caught. These days, when Jeff’s not voiding warranties, he’s writing about voiding warranties. Follow him on Twitter or Facebook.

The iPhone X comes with lots of questions, features, and capabilities, and The MacJury considered them all. From the benefits Apple can reap with their upgrade program, to the many click-bait issues surrounding the new phone, the panel of Josh Centers, Michael E. Cohen, and host Chuck Joiner examine the evidence, including their own experiences. Animoji, the “notch” issue, the new cameras (front and back), Face ID…everything goes into evidence in this bonus-length discussion.

Michael E. Cohen has worked as a teacher, a programmer, a Web designer, a multimedia producer, and a certified usability analyst. He's the author or co-author of several books, including Take Control of Pages, and Take Control of PDFpen 9.

We play catch-up with Adam Engst to discuss the progress of the TidBITS Content Network, what he has been learning about the scope of the Apple presence in the enterprise market, and why it is waking up to the truth of total cost of ownership. Adam dives deep into how some companies and industries are addressing security, and the concerns of users and management alike. Managing access is different than managing data; Adam talks about how managing access is different than managing information, and what that means for business.

He has written numerous books, including the best-selling Internet Starter Kit series, and many magazine articles - thanks to Contributing Editor positions at MacUser, MacWEEK, and now Macworld. His innovations include the creation of the first advertising program to support an Internet publication in 1992, the first flat-rate accounts for graphical Internet access in 1993, and the Take Control electronic book series. His awards include the MDJ Power 25 ranking as the most influential person in the Macintosh industry outside of Apple every year since 2000, inclusion on the MacTech 25 list of influential people in the Macintosh technical community, and being named one of MacDirectory's top ten visionaries. And yes, he has been turned into an action figure. Want more? Follow Adam on Twitter for 140-character musings on a variety of topics.

The iPhone X is finally here, and Chuck spent the weekend working with and evaluating it. Migration options, Animoji, Face ID, OLED screen, notch design, cases, screen protectors, and wireless charging all at the top of the list.
