  • MacVoices #20209: MacVoices Live! with Bob "Dr. Mac" LeVitus (2)
Our MacVoices Live! conversation with featured guest Bob “Dr. Mac” LeVitus and panel members Dave Ginsburg, Brittany Smith, Frank Petrie, and Warren Sklar continues with more about Bob’s new book, GarageBand For Dummies, Second Edition. That part of the discussion includes comparisons of GarageBand and Logic Pro, who each is for, and learning curves. Then, the panel just couldn’t stay away from the Apple/Epic Games battle, but this time we approached it through the copycat version of Apple’s “1984” commercial and director Ridley Scott’s comments about it. (Part 2 of 2)

  • MacVoices #20208: MacVoices Live! with Bob "Dr. Mac" LeVitus (1)
In spite of a technical difficulty, MacVoices Live! went on with featured guest Bob “Dr. Mac” LeVitus and panel members Dave Ginsburg, Brittany Smith, Frank Petrie, and Warren Sklar. In Part 1, Bob talked about his newest effort, GarageBand For Dummies, Second Edition. He explains why it was time for a revision, the track he recorded and used for his examples, and how you can use that very same track to help you learn. Roundtripping between the Mac and iOS versions, piano roll and notation editing, why you need a MIDI keyboard vs. your computer’s keyboard if you are at all serious about GarageBand are all part of the conversation. • MacVoices #20207: Josh Centers Takes Control of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 (2)
We start the second part of our conversation with Josh Centers, the author of Take Control of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, with a review of some of the privacy and security features Apple has built in to iOS 14. Some of those include video and camera use indicators, limited photo roll access by default, and why the new clipboard access notifications correct a potential weak spot in security. Other new features include sleep tracking, improvements to Notes, Voice Memo organization, a translation app, and a lot more. Then we switch over to iPadOS 14 and talk about which of the iOS 14 features are and are not included, why Scribble may be a productivity game changer, and get Josh’s advice on whether these updates should be installed on Day One, or whether you may want to wait a little while.

  • MacVoices #20206: Josh Centers Takes Control of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 (1)
Josh Centers has completely re-written his guide to Apple’s mobile operating systems in Take Control of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. Josh explains how the App Library in iOS 14 works, why it might look like your apps are in two places at once (but aren’t), and how management of those apps is just a little different. Widgets will give you always-on access to the information you want, and provide a new way to display that information. Josh gives us some examples, including a radical idea for a Home or second screen that is now possible. (Part 1)

The second part of our MacVoices Live! conversation with featured guest Michael E. Cohen and the panel of Mark Fuccio, David Ginsburg, Frank Petrie, and host Chuck Joiner wrapped up our discussion of the on-going App Store saga with some interesting parallels to other industries. Then, we turn to the history of eBooks, and Michael’s history with their predecessors such as HyperCard and CD-ROMs, how hardware changes have affected ebooks, and what some of the unappreciated details it takes to make them look “right”.
