Madalyn, BTRtoday

Fall makes me think of middle age.  It’s a wonderful, beautiful time of year, but hey, winter is coming, so we need to make the most of it.  Musically, that reminds me of the genre dad rock.  What is dad rock?  Good ‘ole guitar music that’s made now, but sounds just kind of…dad-like.  I think Tim Heidecker made fun of it on his recent album In Glendale, and so we’re kicking off the set with him today.  Plus, we’ve got new tracks from The Luyas, Chain Wallet, and Fresh Snow!  And don’t forget to check out BTR on Facebook and give us a like.

Every good weird, psych, freak folk album has one or two songs that are short.  Really short.  Like, under a minute short.  They’re weird transitions, experiments, noodles- things that bands include on albums as fun little bits.  But I never play them on the show because that’s what they are- little album transitions.  But today, they’re getting their due.  Every song on this show is under a minute and thirty seconds.  That means there are a TON of songs on the show today, and if you happen not to like one, don’t worry- it’ll be over before you know it.  I hope you enjoy this mix of my favorite weird shorties.

On this week’s show, Garbage Garage is really living up to its name.  We’re not playing garage rock, not exactly.  That’s a slightly different genre.  Today, we’re starting the show off with a lot of grimy, down low punk rock and roll.  A lot of it from California.  Even though we got off to an intense start, we mellow out later with everything from electronic to essentially classical with piano tunes.  And don’t forget to follow BTR on Facebook, Twitter, tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram, and SoundCloud.

This week, we’re going really, truly psychedelic.  New Weird America is all about psych rock from the 60s and 70s, and then artists like Devandra Barnhart in the early 00s made that music their own by adding a folk bent to those ideas.  Since God Bless Weirdmerica is a celebration of all things weird inspired by freak folk, today on the show we’re going full psychedelic.  So get out your tie-dye and read Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, because we’re are totally psychedelic man on the show today.

This week, Garbage Garage is exploring some garage-adjacent female folksters.  We’ve got the likes of Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor, all put together for some sometimes weepy, sometimes strong as hell listening for you.  One time, I went to a Maria Taylor concert in a form roller skating rink in Philly.  Connor Oberst happened to be hanging out there, and my friends and I bought Maria Taylor CDs and then asked him to sign them in front of her.  I still feel bad about it, so it’s nice to play her on the show today.  We’ve also got new tracks from Nots and Allah-Las, and don’t forget to give BTR a like on Facebook!

It’s labor day weekend!  We celebrate the nice long break from work by playing some of our favorite work-themed tracks.  Some of them are all about taking a break, like party band Jamaica, some are all about actually working, like Tim Heidcker’s half-serious Work From Home, and then some are seriously about what’s messed up about work in America, like Sufjan’s track.  Plus, you’ll hear new music from Angel Olsen, Cass McCombs, and Megafauna (not to be confused with Megafauna).  And don’t forget to follow BTR on Facebook!
