On today’s episode, I’m talking with Emily Jaenson, the General Manager of the Reno Aces, a AAA Minor League Baseball team associated with the Arizona Diamondbacks.  

When Emily was hired as the Aces’ GM, she was the first woman GM in Minor League Baseball in 20 years. It’s a fitting position for a woman who first learned how to score baseball games at 5 years old with her mom. Like most of our guests, Emily did not have a straight-line journey in sports to get to her current position. She started off thinking she’d go into athletic training and then pivoted into marketing. Her first job was in ticket sales with the Chicago Bulls. And through several twists and turns, including leaving sports for the non-profit world, she continued to learn and grow along the way, and consistently worked to be so good that no one could forget her. That work paid off and ultimately earned her the GM position. And now she’s using her position to help support other women in sports through her podcast and her work in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in baseball.

Nicole Batista is the founder and President of the CT Chapter of the Society for Public Health Education. She is a certified exercise physiologist and focuses her work on encouraging health and wellness through prevention efforts. She spent several years working with Special Olympics Connecticut as a Coordinator of Health and Wellness among other jobs and opportunities and is about to embark on a new position right about the time this podcast episode comes out.

Alyssa Vaniman is currently an athletic trainer at Arizona Western College where she’s also an Adjunct Faculty in the department of Physical and Wellness Education. At the same time she is going back to school to earn her Doctorate in Athletic Training (DAT) at Indiana State University. Over the pandemic, she co-founded Latinx Athletic Trainers to help provide support and representation for Latinx ATs.

Dr. Jess Bartley is the Director of Mental Health Services for the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee. In this newly created role, Dr. Bartley is responsible for the development and implementation of mental health services and programming for Team USA. 

Prior to this, Jess was a behavioral health consultant and staff psychologist for the University of Denver where she is also a clinical assistant professor in sport and performance psychology. 

Jess has a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and is also a Certified Mental Performance Consultant with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

Dr. Bartley shares the mentors who helped her along the way, the interrelationship of mentors, colleagues, and friends, and how to communicate with a potential mentor.

Dr. Stephanie Kliethermes is a biostatistician who helped develop the Collaborative Research Network for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine in her role as the Research Director for AMSSM. In this role she is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. 

In addition to helping coordinate collaborative sports medicine research across AMSSM, Steph’s personal research focuses on the application of statistical methodology and design to sports medicine topics such as health and well-being in youth, endurance sports, and adaptive sports. 

Steph herself is an endurance runner, Girls on the Run Coach, and a former 3-sport Division III athlete.

Dr. Nailah Coleman is a Sports Medicine Pediatrician at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. 

Nailah is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. Currently, she’s on the Board of Directors for the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine where she is Chair of the Membership Committee and a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion task force.

Taylor Gross is currently the Manager of Program Services at USA Hockey where she works to help promote the growth of the sport. 

Previously, Taylor was the head Women’s Hockey Coach at Midland University, and prior to that, the Co-Head Coach of the 19U AAA Colorado Select Girls Hockey Association. 

Taylor played college hockey at UConn and then transferred to Penn State where she was the inaugural captain of the Penn State Women’s Hockey Team and won the CHA Sportsmanship Award during both of her seasons there.

Teena Murray is currently the Vice President for Athlete Health and Performance with the NBA Sacramento Kings. Previously, she was the Director of Sports Performance at the University of Louisville where she also helped to create their graduate program in strength and conditioning. Teena has been a consultant with USA Hockey, including working with the Women’s team that won Silver at the 2010 Olympics. Her career as a strength and conditioning coach started at Cornell and then UConn.
