Start-up founder Thilo Konzok says it’s important to feel at home on the job, and that work should be driven by passion. He describes the expectations young people nowadays have of their careers.

The World Economic Forum says it is committed to "improving the state of the world.” Its annual list of Technology Pioneers honors companies that address challenges in various fields. German firm Heliatek made it onto the list in 2015. It aims to supply green energy to the world’s major cities. Grit Hofmann got the lowdown on the company.

Fashion label Marc Cain uses 3D technology to manufacture clothing. The German company is based in the southwestern town of Bodelshausen. It hopes to attract high-end customers with its modern methods. Joanna Gottschalk reports.

Originally a team made up of miners, Schalke is now the world’s fourth largest football club, with 135,000 members. One of them is Helmut Lauschus, who is among the very few miners left in the region.

The decline of the coal industry left Gelsenkirchen one of Germany’s poorest cities; these days, the football team is the area’s most successful enterprise. Joachim Eggers visited the team, meeting both fans and miners.

Hamburg is a creative hotbed for the advertising industry, so it’s no surprise that it’s also home to Germany’s first ad agency. The Centrale Announcen Büro William Wilkens was founded in 1876. Over the years, the small agency evolved into a powerhouse that’s now known as FCB.

The enormous ships that dock in Germany’s largest harbor are up to 400 meters long. But they don't arrive under their own steam. They’re brought into harbor by bright-red Kotug tug boats.

One is the ZP Bulldog, which tows enormous container ships and car-carriers into Hamburg’s harbor. Grit Hoffmann pays a visit to the ZP Bulldog and finds out more about the controversial proposal to increase the depth of the Elbe River.

Airbus is Hamburg’s largest employer. About 13,000 employees work at the company’s Hamburg location assembling short-haul and long-haul aircraft. The manufacturing hangars are enormous - several soccer fields in size. One is also where Heike Otto works, heading an A320 final assembly line.

Residential construction is booming in Hamburg. The city is building more new housing units than it has in decades. The most spectacular real estate project is going up in the Baakenhafen harbor basin, right in the middle of the exclusive HafenCity development.

When it’s done, Baakenhafen will have close to 2000 new apartments. About a quarter will be privately-owned condominiums. The rest will be publicly subsidized housing, apartments for seniors, and student housing.

Compared to many other German federal states, Hamburg is booming economically. It’s home to many thriving companies and has attracted major investment. According to national surveys, Hamburg is also Germany’s happiest city. We speak with Thomas Straubhaar, an economist at the University of Hamburg, about the secret behind Hamburg’s success.

Today’s younger generation don't want regular working and hierarchical structures, and they certainly don't want to be stuck in the same job their whole lives. Twenty-somethings expect flexibility and fun from their jobs and aren't prepared to sacrifice the work-life balance. The labor market will have to adjust accordingly.
