Today’s lesson is called Known By Another Name.  “The chapter starts with the BOOM at the door being revealed as a massive bearded man named Rubeus Hagrid, who gives Harry a birthday cake and an invitation to attend Hogwarts, a school of magic. Hagrid is furious with the Dursleys after learning that Harry knows nothing about magic, his parents’ deaths, or his place in the wizarding world. He tells Harry some of the story, like how his parents were killed by the dark wizard Voldemort, who also tried to kill Harry and gave him his lightning-shaped scar. Hagrid’s anger with the Dursley’s finally boils over when they insult Dumbledore, and he casts a spell that causes Dudley to grow a pig’s tail. The Dursley’s flee the cottage.”

Turn to Page 31, The Letters From No One. Today’s lesson is called Avoiding the Inevitable.  “The chapter starts with the end of a school year, and preparation for the next. One morning, Harry is sent to collect the mail, and for the first time ever, discovers a letter addressed to him. Uncle Vernon confiscates the letter before Harry can read it. Over the next days, more and more letters keep arriving for Harry, trying to circumvent Uncle Vernon’s more and more extreme attempts to prevent them. Eventually, Uncle Vernon is driven to take the family out of town, to avoid the letters altogether. When a letter is waiting at their hotel, he takes them to a remote shack near the sea, on the day before Harry’s birthday. Harry counts down to midnight alone, when there is a loud BOOM at the door.”

Turn to Page 18, The Vanishing Glass. Today’s lesson is called Uncaged Hope.  “The chapter starts nearly ten years later, and Harry Potter lives in the cupboard under the stairs, with his Aunt Petunia, his Uncle Vernon, and his cousin, Dudley. Dudley’s parents are taking him and a friend, Piers, to the zoo for his birthday, when Harry’s sitter breaks her leg. Instead of leaving him home alone to cause mischief, the Dursley’s reluctantly take Harry with them. Harry’s unexpected day tasting treats and admiring animals becomes bizarre when he finds himself mid-conversation with a Boa Constrictor, when Piers overhears. Dudley insists on having a front-row seat for this new snake performance, when the glass separating them from the snake mysteriously disappears. Suspicion falls to Harry, after Piers claims he saw Harry talking to the snake, and Harry is banished back into the cupboard under the stairs.”

Turn to Page 1, The Boy Who Lived. Today’s lesson is called Secrets, Secrets.  

Synopsis: The chapter starts following Mr. Durlsey, a brutish, ordinary man, as he goes about his typical work day mixed with some strange happenings, like a map-reading cat. At lunch, he overhears a part of a conversation about someone called Harry Potter, the same name as his nephew, who the Dursleys pretend does not exist. Alongside Vernon Dursley’s normal day gone sour is a celebration by a secret magical community. A very unusual man named Albus Dumbledore arrives outside the Dursley’s house, and confirms for Professor McGonagall (who has morphed out of her cat form) that the dangerous and powerful Voldemort had killed Harry Potter’s parents, yet somehow failed to kill the infant child, and was even destroyed by the very attempt. Dumbledore reveals that baby Harry is to come to stay at the Dursley’s home, much to the chagrin of Professor McGonagall, and be kept from learning his famous identity until he is older.
