Mary Sampey was the youngest of 4 children in a close-knit Catholic family and was raised in Ohio. She can be described a very positive, enthusiastic and upbeat person. She attended Catholic schools through college. She was captain of the cheerleading squad and was voted as the classmate with the most school spirit in high school. Her family were hard workers and were very involved in the community.
An outsider might think that the family had it all together and nothing ever went wrong. But as Mary entered adulthood things were about to change for her family. A number or traumas and health issues occurred within the family, and they went into isolation and secrecy. Her story is about how their faith helped them deal the family illnesses, traumas, and the devastating loss of a family member. Her family would experience great suffering, but it brought her closer to Christ and she learned how suffering can turn to joy. Mary would discover the meaning of a verse God revealed to her, “You do not know what I am doing, but later you will understand.” John 13:7
Mary Sampey has a bachelor’s degree in Catholic theology from St. Vincent College and a master’s degree in theology from Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio. She is an active member and cantor at her parish and has served in roles in the Diocese of Greensburg and the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
This testimony was given to the Morgantown, WV Chapter in August of 2024.

Patty Mansfield begins her talk by sharing the story of how the Ministry received the name ‘Magnificat’, the mystery of the visitation as the Holy Spirit overshadows the encounter of Mary and her cousin Elizabeth.
Patty has traveled to the Holy Land many times and she shares some of her personal experiences. She focuses on four locations, two in Galilee and two in Jerusalem. as she poses the question, “How can I imitate Mary?” Her first stop is in Cana of Galilee at the wedding feast where she tells the servers, “Do whatever He tells you.’ Mary shows ‘confidence,’ no matter how bleak the experience, we must always have confidence in God. Patty gave another of example of how Jesus said, “Blessed our those who hear the Word of God and keep it,” Jesus valued even more than her physical motherhood, her ‘obedience’ to the Word of God. Those are two ways not only to imitate Mary but to ‘be Mary.’ Patty’s last important point was when Jesus gave his mother to the world, he was giving her a new mission of spiritual motherhood.
Our prophetic call in this suffering world and our suffering Church is to stand and pray for our priests, just as Mary stood at the cross of Jesus. She endured, she humbled herself and stayed hidden. She was a lowly handmaiden who emptied herself for the sake of her son and the new Pentecost.
This talk was given at the ‘Who Do You Say That I Am’ Magnificat International Leaders Conference on October 8, 2021.

In this 20th episode of the Understanding Catholicism Series, our presenter, James Seghers, reflects on how the life of the Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice of our Blessed Lord’s Passion and death and how the sacraments are powers that come forth from the risen body of Jesus and are always life-giving.
James recounts how The Passion commenced shortly after The Last Supper when Jesus made his wedding vows in a deeply personal act, “This is my body which is given for you.” He details how our Lord, in his immense suffering, was not only burdened by the horrors of His impending Passion and crucifixion, but also by a profound sense of abandonment and sorrow over humanity’s sinfulness, offering a comforting understanding of our own struggles.
James further explains how we are subject to trials throughout our lives. Amidst our trials, however, and even while heaven’s assistance seems far off, we should look to Getsemene. The heavenly Father, who knows all and eternity, knows what is best for us. “Not my will, but yours be done.”
James also relays how the Apostles suffered during The Passion. However, their responses demonstrate human frailty, as Jesus said to Peter, “The spirit Is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Only by relying on Jesus, not ourselves, can we conquer our will and receive transforming graces. However, despite the Apostle’s desertion during The Passion, Jesus’ love and forgiveness continue to follow and unite the Apostles, leading them to a deeper understanding and gladly pick up their crosses to do the Father’s will.
This is the 20th Episode in the (20 Episode Series) of Understanding Catholicism.

In this 19th episode of the Understanding Catholicism Series, our presenter, James Seghers, explores the unique gifts God bestowed on the Blessed Virgin Mary as the ‘chosen one.’ He also discusses how it is the Father’s plan to incorporate all his earthly sons and daughters into the Blessed Trinity—the salvation of souls.
James explains how the Lord, in his Divine Providence, chooses to work within human limitations. Every human has a destiny to achieve in the divine plan—a vocation accepted or rejected as God loves but never forces his will.
When we honor the holy heroes—the saints—we are not just celebrating their achievements, but also the power and love God has manifested in them. For without God, their accomplishments would have been nothing.
James also discusses the Old Testament and Mary’s unique role from the very dawn of civilization and the ‘first gospel,’ which foreshadows the future Messiah to the graces given to Mary in order to fulfill her unique role.
This is the 19th Episode in the (20 Episode Series) of Understanding Catholicism.

In this 18th episode of the Understanding Catholicism Series, our presenter, James Seghers, discusses the spiritual aspects of celibacy and how it is connected with the sacrament of matrimony and the Church’s teaching on Purgatory.
Celibacy is the voluntary vow to remain unmarried and to practice sexual abstinence. The Church teaches that all the ordained ministers, except permanent deacons, are typically chosen from among men of faith who live a celibate and intend to remain celibate for the sake of the Kingdom of God for the rest of their lives. (Mathew Chapter 19).
Jim explains that those who faithfully live their celibate vocations proclaim that Christ has come, the Kingdom is here, and we live it now. Jesus does not command celibacy but rather offers it as an exception to the general vocation, which is to marry. Pope John Paul II said celibacy is a gift, a charismatic sign—a grace and a personal choice made for the Kingdom of God. James further discusses fidelity and fruitfulness in celibacy, union with God, and human marriage.
In discussing Purgatory, a word that means “cleansing,” James shares that Purgatory is where those who die in God’s grace and friendship go. While ensuring their eternal salvation, those souls in Purgatory cannot enter heaven until they are purified. God forgives sin, but as evident in sacred scripture, temporal punishment is necessary before entering heaven. James further discusses mortal sin, venial sins, and their consequences.
This is the 18th Episode in the (20 Episode Series) of Understanding Catholicism.
