He enjoyed this calling and his priestly duties, yet in his heart, Bishop Jacobs felt something was missing. In desperation, he asked the Lord to reveal the answer, and in time, it was revealed. This revelation led to a new spiritual awakening and played an important role in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement.

The Podcast is a platform for inspiring testimonies that showcase God’s goodness, greatness, and grace in our lives. These testimonies not only inform and educate but also encourage and inspire us to develop, deepen, and cultivate our relationship with the Triune God. “Commit to the Lord, trust in Him, and He will act.”

It was a rough day at sea, and Fr. Tom Sparacino doesn’t pretend otherwise. “That’s a heavy load when you’re rocking on the seas — literally.” He’d spent the morning watching the seabirds dive-bomb into the waves and wondering where they ever find rest, and one bird out in front of the ship looked to him like the Holy Spirit leading the way.

He admits he’s not a confident flyer, and he hadn’t counted on turbulence on a boat. When a plane bounces, he asks, do you grab the seat in front of you? “Do you realize you’re holding on to the thing that’s going to crash?” That’s what fear does, and it’s what the evil one does: he wants us to go with him. “We could never go with him, because we have the Lord. Why would we want something like that when we have salvation?”

On the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Fr. Tom traces where Mary has appeared — in the fields of Portugal, in a cave in Lourdes, on a mountain in France with tears on her face — and notes that every time, she warns us: don’t give in to evil.

The day’s psalm is a reaction to that same question every believer eventually asks: why do the wicked seem to prosper while the good suffer? The psalmist’s answer is simple — commit to the Lord your way; trust in Him, and He will act. Fr. Tom shares the breviary antiphon he underlines every time he comes across it: “I love you, Lord, my strength.” It’s only by grace that we overcome wickedness, he says. The good aren’t losing. They’re gaining grace.

Then he turns to the Gospel, where Jesus says it isn’t what goes into a person that defiles but what comes out of the heart. Fr. Tom loves to cook — with plenty of garlic, so the seminarians always know when he’s in the kitchen — and he points out that even the best meal in the world ends up in the latrine. “We’ve eaten good on this boat, right?” But the food we receive at the altar, and the Word we consume, cut straight to the heart — “where wickedness doesn’t live, but God lives, the good lives. And that’s where we need to live.”

“Wickedness always appears to be winning — but it will never win. Commit to the Lord. For Lord, You are our strength, You are our hope.”

In this inspiring collection of nine homilies, Fr. Tom invites listeners into a deeper encounter with Jesus Christ through the liturgical year, the Eucharist, and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. Drawing from the lives of saints including Simeon, Anna, St. Agatha, St. Scholastica, St. Bernadette, and St. Blaise, these messages demonstrate how ordinary people become extraordinary witnesses through unwavering faith and courageous obedience.

One of the most powerful themes woven throughout the homilies is that God does not abandon His people in suffering. Rather than removing every trial, He provides the grace necessary to endure them. In this warm and wide-ranging talk, Bishop Mark Eckman shares the story of his vocation, his path to the episcopacy, and his hopes for the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Speaking with humor, humility, and a clear pastor’s heart, Bishop Eckman reflects on his upbringing in St. Valentine Parish in Bethel Park, the people and experiences that shaped his priesthood, and the way prayer guided each major turn in his life.

Bishop Eckman walks listeners through his formation at St. Paul’s Seminary and St. Vincent Seminary, his ordination in 1985, and the many roles he held over the years: parochial vicar, high school chaplain and teacher, pastor, vicar for clergy, auxiliary bishop, and eventually Bishop of Pittsburgh. Along the way, he shares memorable moments from parish life, his love of planning and organization, and his longstanding commitment to serving wherever the Church asked him to go.

Bishop Eckman explains his episcopal motto, “To serve in faith and charity,” and describes his diocesan listening sessions focused on how parishes can strengthen the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. “If yesterday’s word was pride, I think today’s word is power.”

Fr. Tom Sparacino opens with the question the whole homily turns on: to whom do you give power? Do you let the Lord have power in your heart, your soul, your life — or do you hand it to someone else?

He knows how quickly power gets misassigned, because he watches it happen to his seminarians. Families arrive ready to ordain their son on day one. His first words to them: please don’t. When he comes home, have him do the dishes, take out the trash, wash the toilets. “But Father, he’s never taken out the trash.” Well — that’s not on me, that’s on you. Because the power a priest is given was never his to begin with.

From there he goes to Paul: “You are not in darkness, brothers, that the day should catch you off guard like a thief. No, all of you are children of the light and of the day.” Our power comes from light. He sets that beside David, who started counting his army because he was getting full of himself again — until he came to his senses. God, he says, doesn’t care about the numbers the way David did. He cares about your heart.

The Holy Spirit. Grace that is sufficient. The name of Jesus. And light — the light of true knowledge that, as the spiritual writer puts it, makes it possible to discern without error the difference between good and evil.

Then the hard question. Jesus was in their midst and they didn’t realize it; they weren’t willing to listen, weren’t willing to believe. Are you willing? He pictures his guys at 7 a.m. Mass, slumped in the chapel — what are you doing with the power you have to grasp the word of God? The Word is coming into your midst, and you’re sitting there thinking, maybe not today.

He ends with the ocean story. Newly ordained, on a two-week beach vacation his friends gave him, floating in the Atlantic and marveling that there is power in these hands — but only in the name of Jesus. Lord, if I bless the ocean, and the ocean touches all the waters of the world, our work is done, right? It isn’t that easy. He needs you. He needs the power He gave you, for the specific part of His work of salvation that has your name on it.

“Give Him power. Give Him power over your life. Don’t give power to the evil one, because he’s going to lose. We only win with Jesus.”

While building a successful career in respiratory therapy, God gradually awakened a deeper desire—not only to care for people’s physical health but also to help heal their spiritual wounds. Through Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO), she learned to overcome her fear of speaking and discovered the joy of evangelization and missionary discipleship.

The heart of the conversation centers on Maria’s long and often difficult vocational discernment. After exploring religious life, dating relationships, and years of waiting on the Lord, she discovered the ancient vocation of Consecrated Virginity—a permanent, public consecration as a bride of Christ while remaining in the secular world. She shares how this vocation perfectly fulfilled the deepest desires God had planted in her heart and culminated in her consecration by the Diocese of Victoria in 2022.

Susan Potvin, worship leader and inspirational speaker, has been involved in Catholic and ecumenical renewal work for more than forty years. She and her husband, Urby, who have been married for 45 years, reside in Steubenville, Ohio. They have raised 4 children and have 2 grandchildren and one on the way. Susan is the leader of Living Praise Worship Team, which travels nationally and internationally, serving such groups as Magnificat® – A Ministry to Catholic Women, where she is the Chair for Praise and Worship…. Women of Grace®, the National Charismatic Renewal and many local dioceses and women’s  ministries. With Living Praise, Susan has produced seven worship CD’s. Susan has a passion to speak and teach about praise and worship and inspire others in their relationship with the Lord. Graduating from Franciscan University of Steubenville with a B.A. in Theology, Susan also has a Masters of Education in School Counseling from Liberty University and is a trained Spiritual Director through the School of Spiritual Direction at Franciscan University. Susan works as a school counselor at a K-12 Christian school.

Gail opens up about her childhood battle with severe shyness and a debilitating 20-year struggle with crippling social anxiety. From her early career at Grumman Aerospace to a dramatic physical healing, a painful divorce after 22 years of marriage, and an unexpected late-in-life romance, Gail shares how surrendering her life completely to Jesus and the Blessed Sacrament transformed her from a trapped introvert into a joyful leader of music ministry and Catholic Charismatic renewal.

Outwardly loved by her family, she felt deeply isolated and unable to speak full sentences to outsiders, building a protective wall around her emotions and developing early signs of panic and social anxiety.

While studying computer science in college, Gail stopped praying and declared herself an atheist. However, following the tragic death of a classmate, a profound, desolate emptiness during a memorial service led her to realize God had removed His presence to show her He had been there all along.

After landing a software job at Grumman Aerospace, Gail’s anxiety intensified. Unable to speak to street evangelists, Jesus met her in her living room through a Christian radio program where she accepted Him as her Lord and Savior. She eventually found community, scripture memorization, and emotional safety within a local Baptist church’s young adult group.

Gail details her 1991 marriage to her first husband, Joe, and her subsequent introduction to the Catholic Charismatic renewal via the Spirit Life Center. She shares a powerful, mystical experience before the Blessed Sacrament that resolved her doubts about the Real Presence, leading to her confirmation.

After discovering an internet-backed dietary solution, Gail experienced a sudden lift of her 20-year anxiety—which turned out to be an intense physical response to artificial hormones in meat. This miraculous healing occurred just two weeks before she needed to step up as the primary caregiver for her dying father.

As Gail found her voice, her marriage dynamics fractured, resulting in a painful divorce after 22 years. Gail reflects on the hours spent in a 24-hour adoration chapel, using the book I Hurt by Ann Costa to weed out bitterness, leading her to pursue a clean slate through the annulment process.

Gail recounts reconnecting with her college friend, Mark O’Brien, leading to a vibrant wedding with 100 guests—a stark contrast to her first private wedding. She details their spiritual battles as a couple and her current fulfillment leading praise with the Joyful Heart music ministry and the Albany Magnificat chapter.

Growing up in a Catholic family, Deacon David attended Catholic schools and colleges, but afterward, he fell away from the faith. Pursuing a successful career in television broadcasting in Washington, D.C. and then in Dallas, Texas, unexpected life events changed his course, leading him back to the faith and eventually to being ordained a deacon, where he has served at St. Francis of Assisi parish in La Quinta, California, since his ordination in 2012.

Preached on the memorial of St. Agatha, as the group prepares to go ashore for a day of mission, this homily asks a plain question: what are we actually equipped with?

Fr. Tom Sparacino starts with the gifts. Those in the Charismatic Renewal have them, he says — the trouble isn’t receiving, it’s using. Each of us has been given something different, and the Lord asks us to embrace it.

Men spend seven or eight years in the seminary, and on ordination day he tells them the truth: “Congratulations — we’ve prepared you for a priesthood that doesn’t really exist.” Books don’t equip a priest. The school of the Spirit does. And that school, he says, is the one all of us are enrolled in.

So what does the Spirit equip us with? Two things. Holiness — not the position of our hands or the clothes we wear, but a focus fixed on one and only one, Jesus. And fear of the Lord — not being afraid, but knowing our lives are nothing without Him, that nothing we could ever want or dream of compares to Him.

She focused on one and only one. She was tortured with hot coals — which is why she’s invoked as a patron of firefighters, and why Fr. Tom, watching the water that morning and thinking about the graces flowing, decided she ought to be a patron of the Charismatic Renewal too. “We want those hot charcoals to touch our hearts today. We want to burn. We want to be consumed by the fire of the Holy Spirit.”

He’s honest about how asking works: tell the Lord what you want — he does, all the time, and it usually doesn’t go his way — but trust that He gives what you need, because His grace is always sufficient. The gifts and the fruits begin with fear of the Lord and grow into a life of piety: honoring God, and nothing else.

He closes with St. Paul: “We pray for you always, that our God may make you worthy of His call and fulfill by His power every intention and work of faith.” Live in the Spirit today. Be dependent on Him. And with these gifts, do the one thing we were made to do — exalt God forever.
