Bird Streets is the musical project of NY-based songwriter John Brodeur. Using the name - a reference to a neighborhood in LA, which happens to be where he recorded the band’s debut album, revealed a new sort of musical freedom for Brodeur’s songs. In collaboration with producer Jason Falkner, Brodeur has crafted a selection of tight, melodic pop/rock songs that’ll be stuck in your head for days. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to give us a taste of their music.

We first met Brooklyn bassist extraordinaire Eva Lawitts when the band Citris dropped by, but she’s a musician who you’ve likely heard already, whether you realize it or not. Be it one of her own projects, or alongside Princess Nokia, Lawitts has lent her formidable skills to more projects than we can count. With Stimmerman, her frenetic, heady bass mastery and otherworldly, cutting vocals lead the way for a stunningly weird and wonderful musical journey through shifting tempos and proggy movements (look out for that sweet sax jam) that we instantly fell in love with.

It’s been a few years since we last caught up with the Philadelphia-based orchestral indie pop band, Grandchildren. Aleks Martray’s compositions have remained the core of the band’s tightly wound compositions as the form of the group has evolved over the past decade. These days, with vocalist Shari Amanda’s captivating performance in the mix, the band has pulled back on some of the instrumentation bells and whistles (not *actual* bells and whistles, necessarily) and refocused on their songwriting and performance, creating a truly unique blend that stays true to the project’s roots while taking it to an entirely new level of enjoyment.

Tuff Sunshine is a NYC indie rock group headed up by singer/songwriter Johnny Leitera. For this incarnation of the group, bassist Turner Stough brings in his I Am The Polish Army bandmate Emma DeCorsey on guitar and vocals while drummer-about-town Rich Hutchins fills things out with tasteful precision. Leitera’s songwriting style brings a confident sort of cool to candid lyrics, which often make way for classically riffy, funky rock moves.
