Maia, BTRtoday episodes

  • Roya
Roya is a Brooklyn-based band with a strong pedigree in the local and national scene, with members from notable acts Habibi, The Clean, Grooms, and Angry Angles. Musically, they tread the now-familiar world of post-punk groove, with touches of 60s pop and a focus on lyrics at the forefront that allow them to sing about even the darkest of subjects with a deceptively upbeat vibe. They stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO to give us a first look at and listen to what they have in store as their debut album looms.
Roya’s self-titled debut record will be released via Burger Records on March 5, 2017.

  • Sam Kogon
Sam Kogon is a Brooklyn musician with an arsenal of vintage sounds and styles. His technicolor indie rock take on glam, which he’s apt to calling “baroque pop,” feels warm and familiar in a way that’s reminiscent of the Beach Boys at times. Surrounded by some of the scene’s most talented musicians -- including a collaboration with Frankie Cosmos on the album version of this particular track -- Kogon is a young artist with an already-impressive musical resume.
Psychic Tears by Sam Kogon is available now from Beyond Beyond Is Beyond Records.

Nelson, Humberto, Andrea, and Luis are Brooklyn-based band, Stuyedeyed. • Solilians
Solilians is a psychedelic drone pop band from Long Island, New York. Appropriately enough, their album is dedicated to the memory of the late, great Leonard Nimoy, and sung in Hebrew. This cosmic crew of Sharon Malkin, Benjamin Malkin, Gabriel Walsh, and Neptune Sweet is very much on their own, special trip and we’re along for the ride. They dropped into Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to bring some of their vibes our way for this session.

Samuel Tyrone Cotton is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Louisville, Kentucky. Playing music since his early 20s, Cotton draws on the influence of a wide range of blues, folk, and rock greats -- from BB King (the first artist he saw in concert) to Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan, and Jimi Hendrix. For his latest project, Tyrone has ventured to Woodstock, New York, along with the talented production team of Josh Kaufman (Bob Weir, Craig Finn, Dear Georgiana, David Wax Museum, Josh Ritter, Caitlin Demarrais, and Balthrop, Alabama) and Ray Rizzo (Bob Weir, Yo Yo Ma, Doveman, Trixie Whitley, Glen Hansard, Days Of The New, Dawn Landes) to craft a career-defining record. • Emilyn Brodsky
Emilyn Brodsky plays the ukulele with so much fire that you have to wonder why she doesn’t make the move to electric guitar… well, because she’s chosen her weapon, and it’s that tiny stringed instrument that she bashes away at while singing and commanding the stage with a similar intensity. This is part folk, part punk, but not entirely either one in the traditional sense. We’re kind of fascinated by Emilyn (she’s very chatty and has a way of drawing you into her world quickly) and we think you will be too. Check out this fun session recorded live at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn to see for yourself.

  • denitia & sene.

denitia & sene. is the duo of Denitia Odigie and Bryan “sene” Marc. Since the Brooklyn band’s beginnings in 2012, both have launched great careers -- Denitia with her own music and sene primarily as an actor, recently starring in White Girl and Nerve. With their latest release, they prove that they haven’t lost the magic they have together, crafting smooth, powerful, memorable alt-R&B jams that’ll stick with you. The band was still riding high from their record release show the next morning when they rolled in for this session at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, and you can feel that energy in this performance.
