Maid of Steel: A Supergirl Podcast

Nia Nal was born and raised in Parthas. On Parthas humans and aliens live together in peace. She had a happy childhood and loved her hometown but always envisioned herself doing more. She attended college in Washington DC where she wrote speeches for Cat Grant. Nia was going to change people's minds with her words. Ms. Grant sent her to Catco to be mentored by Kara.

Nia came to National City at a turbulent time. The Children of Liberty were trying to get aliens out of their town. She is no stranger to the difficulties of being different. She was assigned male at birth but knew with her whole heart and soul that she was meant to be a girl. The universe thought so too. She was bestowed the power to see the future through her dreams. A gift given only to one daughter per generation on Naltor, the planet her mother is from.

Nia tragically loses her mother to a spider bite after failing to read the warning signs in her dreams. She has a lot of frustration around losing her mother before learning to harness the full potential of her powers. She is still in the beginning of learning all the abilities bestowed on a Dreamer. Hopefully soon we will see her reach out to her sister. Maeve studied her whole life to become the next Dreamer. Perhaps teaching Nia will help repair the rift in their relationship.

This is such a super journey we are on with Nia Nal. Every few episodes we can watch her powers grow and evolve as she becomes more skilled. I have loved watching Kara mentor her and Brainy calm her doubts. When Supergirl leaves us at the end of the season, I hope Dreamer can continue on another show in our universe. I don't want her story to end after only 2 years of making this world a better, more tolerant place. She is a great Superhero and an asset to any team. Making the world better with both words and deeds. She is the transgendered Superhero this community has been dreaming of.

Midvale is the small town where Kara Zor El became Kara Danvers. A place where she found a new purpose. Alex Danvers' life was easier before Kara crashed into it. She had two loving parents and not so much responsibility. Now her mother expects her to be a good Earth ambassador and make sure her sister is safe and happy. Maybe that part would not be such a hardship if she hadn't lost her father to achieve that goal. Alex has never had a sister before but she promises to get better at it.

The first time we visit Midvale two broken hearted women are returning to their childhood home for some comfort. It is there that we learn that the death of Kenny Li in high school really brought Alex and Kara closer together. It was the first time they worked together to make the world a better place. It was a story told through a flashback so no harm was done to the timeline.

In season six we get another Midvale based story. However this one involves time travel in a post crisis world. In order to save Kara from the Phantom Zone they need a sample of her blood. Nia and Brainy head to 2009 to save their Maid of Steel. It is a reality where Kenny Li has survived. Yes that also means the sisters don't form that initial bond as a consequence of his murder. However, the Green Butterfly is not concerned. In any timeline, through any twist of fate, these two sisters will find their common ground. They are destined to make the world a better place. Kara is the Paragon of Hope but she does not stand alone. Right beside her stands Sentinel, always watching and protecting as a good big sister does.

Kara is still stuck in the Phantom Zone. When a phantom attacks Supergirl is overwhelmed with fear. She fears if her team attempts to save her they will all die, and it would be all her fault! It has taken Brainy and Nia three days to return from Midvale with the DNA they need to pinpoint Supergirl in the fractured Phantom Zone. However, the rest of the team has not been idle.

J'onn has modified the top few levels of his tower to become a ship. A vessel that has special shields for interdimensional travel and a containment unit for Prime Phantom. Lena has harnessed the power of the yellow sun into a bomb. This creation has the power to repel the phantoms and recharge Supergirl's powers simultaneously. All is going smoothly until a breach in the containment cell allows some of Prime Phantom to affect the team. Now what stands between them and saving Supergirl is their own fear.

In Alex's mind her greatest fear is being the one person who causes the mission to fail by being reckless. Lena must face the guilt she feels surrounding her mothers death. Also the thought of losing all her friends after finally being made part of the team. Nia must stop doubting herself. She is still learning and has really stepped up in Supergirl's absence. Nia must build her confidence in her dream interpretation and give herself a little grace as she continues her hero's journey. Kelly fears she is the weak link on this team because she has no superpower. She undervalues the importance that she has. She can help the team cope with the mental and emotional side of being a superhero. Without her they may have not been able to find their individual touchstones that brought them out of their fear visions. Yes Kelly is human but so is Alex who was saving people from danger long before she got a shape shifting Martian weapon. Kelly doesn't need a shield to make a meaningful contribution to this team.

J'onn can resist the Prime Phantom fear visions due to his martian biology and connection to his brother Malefic. Due to his mind reading abilities he must suffer the fears of his whole team when he fights the Phantom. He is able to subdue the foe and return it to containment. This allows our superfriends to amerge from their individual nightmares. Brainy is afraid of balloons but we don't have time to unpack that. It is time to save Kara.

Now that Kara's location has been pinpointed by her DNA. The team deploys the sunlight bomb to repel phantoms and reenergize Kara. Supergirl speeds onto the ship and into Alex's embrace. All appears well as they launch through a portal back to Earth. Unfortunately things are not as sunny as they seem. Instead of Kara's father we see the true face of the person that has been encouraging Kara all episode long. She is in fact Nyxly, the fifth dimensional imp and she wants to get home. If she causes some mayhem in National City along the way that is just more fun for her. We have to wait until August 24th for the next chapter of this super adventure. CJ Grant is determined to get the story. She will do whatever it takes to show Perry White that she is destined for more than the tabloid stories he sends her to cover. She will find her own story. One that will make her more famous than Lois Lane. However her hubris may change her destiny forever.

Brainy and Nia must follow Kara to prom. They have to be there on site for the meteor shower. Kara's encounter with that space rock will provide our super friends with the blood sample they need. Using The genetic code found there, they can hopefully find present day Supergirl in the phantom zone and bring her home.

They are however temporarily unable to fulfill their main mission. Nia continues to dream of a pink cougar and continues to have trouble interpreting what it means. CJ Grant unknowingly releases Naxim Tork, who turns around and locks her up. Nia realizes the pink cat represents Cat Grant and they must save her before she changes her fate.

Kara is one strong girl already. She is truthful with Kenny about what is in her heart. Cat Grant will make Kara stronger. Cat Grant will teach Kara how to stand up for herself. Cat Grant stands up to Perry White and goes on to start Catco Media. We have had many awesome episodes demonstrating the positive things Cat Grant has brought to Kara Danvers' life. Our super friends are amazing and able to do it all. Now time to leave 2009 and head back to the present to save our Maid of Steel!

The mission this week is to collect some of Kara's DNA to help locate her in the fractured phantom zone and bring her home. Sure it would be easier to head over to her apartment and grab a hair brush but this will be far more fun. Brainy and Nia head to prom night 2009 in Midvale. There, according to Alex, Kara saved the Earth from a meteor impact. The rock was composed partly of kryptonite causing Kara to bleed on the baseball field. The well calculated plan that Brainy devised goes sideways when a piece of the legion ship breaks. The result is Brainy and Nia crash a day early right in front of the people they hoped to avoid.

Kara is immediately on board to help these stranded aliens as Alex remains skeptical. Brainy and Nia are spit up. Nia will stay with the girls and Brainy will stay with Kara's boyfriend Kenny. I know what you are thinking. Kenny died when Alex was in high school. However in the post crisis world Kenny is alive and helping Kara save the citizens and pets of Midvale. Their activities cause the town to make headlines.

It is those headlines that drive young C. J. Grant into town to uncover the story. What or who is making Midvale so lucky? She is determined to get the story and return to Metropolis with a scoop that will overshadow Lois Lane.

An overeager reporter is not the only thing our team must overcome. They are also fighting stress, doubt and antiquated technology. There is also another alien by the name of Naxim Torkis in town. He is looking to add to his cosmic collection and the Man of Steel proved too hard to catch. Will he capture Kara while she is young and inexperienced causing irreparable damage to the timeline? Will he get a Naltorean and Caluan as a bonus? With Brainy and Nia's plan off course could their actions have consequences for the present? Will the simple fact of Kenny being alive alter Kara's course and therefore her journey to become a Superhero? The number of citizens infected by the phantoms continues to rise. Brainy keeps constructing more containment pods. If a new plan is not formed soon, Supergirl will come home to a phantom zone on Earth! With each life force gained, Phantom Prime becomes more powerful. If the team cannot find the chrysalis before it solidifies, the infected will be lost souls forever!

Meanwhile in the phantom zone Nyxly uses her magic to portal to the pocket where Kara believes the exit from this dimension is. Allura would never leave her guards stranded. They are quickly disappointed as they find the portal mirror broken. Kara refuses to lose hope despite her father's skepticism.

Back on Earth, Alex refuses to believe that she will not succeed in both missions in front of her. She must save the city and her sister. She soon comes to realize that an impossible choice needs to be made. What would Kara do in this moment? Alex has no doubt that her sister would save the world before herself every single time. Alex must soldier on and make the hard choices so she does not lose both battles.

Nia is frustrated with her powers. Why does she keep dreaming of Kara and Alex in high school? How can that possibly be significant on the current mission? It is splitting her focus and making it hard for her to find Phantom Prime's lair. M'gann only received a part of her soul from J'onn, leaving the rest of her soul trapped in the chrysalis with the others. This gives her the power to sense phantoms and therefore help Dreamer with the mission.

Lena is really enthusiastic about working with the team at the tower. She develops a device to capture phantoms hands free, keeping you safe from a scratch that will steal your soul. She also has a way to locate Kara in the fractured phantom zone. If only they could find something containing her genetic code. Time is running out and the chrysalis is about to become impenetrable. Alex will have to make a hard choice. She takes the device from Lena and changes its function. Now she can use it to pierce the chrysalis and free all the souls inside.

Back in the phantom zone Nyxly is not quite what she seems. Supergirl thought she found an ally in a world full of foes but she was wrong. Nyxly wanted Supergirl to activate the portal out of this dark place. When Supergirl realizes Nyxly's nefarious intentions she smashes the mirror. This possibly sentences herself and her father to an eternity of darkness. She did what she had to do. She would not let an imp set on vengeance loose on the Earth. Kara will find another way and will never lose hope because she is our Maid of Steel.

When a phantom escaped into the city I was sure our biggest problem would be doubt and despair. The reality is much worse. These aliens also inject venom into their victim's body. After a short incubation period the victim is transformed into a phantom. They steal your soul and enslave you. Brainy says they had done this on many planets before the Kryptonians sent them to their newly created prison world. Supergirl is still trapped in the Phantom Zone which is now fractured into innumerable pieces. The super friends must protect the city and save her. Their biggest challenge is not losing hope in Kara's absence.

The legal system failed to punish Lex Luthor but Lena and Brainy are working together to seek vengeance. Lena locks Lex out of all accounts including the Lex Foundation. This organization is only a front to funnel money to Kaznia for weapons. Brainy is able to reroute the balance of the account to the Luthor Children's Wing of National City Hospital. Lex quickly strikes back telling the media that Lena is to blame for a fire at the facility that was actually set by Otis. Lena's soul will never survive as a member of this backstabbing family. She will be her own hero and abdicate the throne of a company whose values she does not support. She does not need the Luthor fortune. With her brilliant mind, Lena will succeed all on her own. She will leave her family behind and surround herself with her super friends. They are a family she is building for herself.

Meanwhile Kara and her father's attempt to catch a ride with a phantom out of the dark place fails. Supergirl is forcefully propelled backwards injuring her leg. Some criminals take her father captive to feed him to a monster in a lake. Kara receives some unexpected help from a being from another dimension. In conversation Kara learns that they have a mutual friend in Mxyzptik. She is Nyxly, a princess of the fifth dimension, whose father banished her here. After a speech from our Paragon of Hope, Nyxly uses the last spark in her magical orb to break her magical shackles and restore her power. She in turn uses that power to heal Kara.

On Earth M'gann defies J'onn's orders and goes on patrol alone. She is attacked by a phantom and has to be rushed back to the tower for treatment. Because of the Martian ritual that she and J'onn performed just days before, a piece of M'gann's soul resides in J'onn. They hope this will be enough to save her since it is the stealing of the soul that leads to the transformation. Back in the Phantom Zone Kara wonders if Nyxly's newly restored magic can save them all from eternity in this dark place. Only time will tell if this plan will work. Kara is trapped in a place where phantoms roam free and you are forced to relive the most disturbing moments of your life. In this realm time does not move. If you try to resist the phantoms they will drive you insane. In this place of endless fear and despair, Kara finds an unexpected ally. Her father sent himself to the Phantom Zone to escape the destruction of Krypton and has been evading the phantoms ever since.

Lex Luthor is on trial for crimes against humanity. He tried to take free will from half the world and kill the rest. Andrea sends Nia and William to cover the trial. Nia is late for work because she was fighting a vampire! No, there are not really vampires in National City but there is a blood drinking alien from the planet Transylvania. His name is Silas and he has gotten in and back out of the Phantom Zone so perhaps he can help our team save Kara.

When Silas successfully opens a portal Brainy is distressed to find that Crisis has left the landscape fractured. The once solid landscape is now an archipelago of pocket dimensions, how will they find their Maid of Steel in there. Meanwhile Kara tries to inspire her father and devise a plan of escape.

Speaking of escape, Lex is avoiding jail time by pinning his crimes on a few good women. A phantom has entered our dimension through the portal Silas created. Our super friends try to outrun despair as their first plan to save Supergirl fails. We will not lose hope in our paragon. This was only the first battle in a war we will win. We are Maid of Steel.

Lex Luthor is wielding the power of three ancient gods of Leviathan. Gememnea escaped the bottle because she is pure technology. She could not be defeated in the same way. Dreamer has made it to Brainy's location to find him on the brink of death. Alex arrives and administers a treatment for the radiation poisoning. The treatment allows Brainy's head to clear enough to tell the team about the anti-life equation. It has the power to defeat pure technology which is what Gememnea is. Each member of the team has their strengths and together they must fight to save this world. Lex has changed Lena's do no harm program to the I love Lexi upgrade. Half of the population will adore him regardless of his actions and the others that were not logged in during the unity festival will die. This would include his sister but she killed him first so he considers that fair. Supergirl wants to save the world even if it means sacrificing her life. She agrees to surrender in exchange for the codes to disable the satellites that Lex launched into space. Dreamer sees a possible scenario where Lex is ending worlds Anti-Monitor style. If these satellites are not disabled simultaneously they are each equipped to fire missiles at Earth. M'gann suggests a Martian binding ritual so what they do to one satellite will affect all of them. Supergirl heads to the fortress to face Lex. Also stored in the kryptonian stronghold is an artifact from the Leviathan home planet. The only substance capable of stripping Lex of his immortality. After an epic battle Lex thinks he has won. He has overloaded Kara's body with kryptonite, however Lena has developed a new addition to the super suit to provide extra protection to our Maid of Steel. Kara Zor El does not work alone and just as Lillian Luthor predicted our super friends have found the only element that can restore her son's mortality. In the face of victory there is also defeat. Lex Luthor is a mortal man once again but the cost was high. Kara is once again trapped in The Phantom Zone. Her coordinates in that vast dark place are unknown. One thing we know for sure, Supergirl's friends and her beloved sister will never give up on her. Alex has been given a new title by J'onn. She will serve the tower as the Sentinel. Supergirl and her team have faced a lot of turmoil recently. Not the least of which was a crisis of epic proportion. The process of bringing numerous Earth's together left Supergirl and her friends on Earth Prime. I fear the cosmic shift will lead to many yet unforeseen problems. Lex Luthor has manipulated his way to the center of it all, crowning himself the Paragon of Truth. Many crazy events have transpired. Perhaps this butterfly should start at the beginning. Lena sold Catco to Andrea Rojas who is eager to turn it in to a tabloid newspaper. Why should she report real news when her main financial endeavor is on the next floor down at Obsidian North? People are encouraged to let go of reality and live in the virtual world her company has created. Lena uses the money earned from the sale of the magazine to fund her Non Nocere initiative. Her goal is to create a society of people that no longer wish to harm one another. These two college friends are on different paths. One wants to entice people into a fake manufactured world. The other wants to make the real world a better place. One of the best things about season five is the end of Lena being on the outside of our super friends group. We spent far too long in previous seasons wondering when she would learn the truth. We all said being the genius she is Lena probably knew for a long time. Regardless it was important for Kara to say it out loud to someone she calls her closest friend. Nia and Brainy were a joy this season and my hope is that they can come back together again. I hope Dreamer has not come too late and she is able to save Brainy whose life was in grave danger. Brainy bottled the gods of Leviathan at great personal cost. Then Lex took the bottle. Who knows what he will choose to do with it. Lillian has returned to National City to work with her son. One never knows what devious plans they might orchestrate. We never met the Ancient One whose power seemed to be something that should be revered. Lex was given a second chance at life but I fear he thinks he can outsmart a god. He is just a fool who is biting off more then he can chew. The true Paragon of this story is Kara Zor El. She lost one world and will not lose another. Her hope inspires us all to be super in our own ways. Re-engage with reality and join with Lena to make the real world a better place. Supergirl with her sister and her team by her side will survive whatever chaos ridden nightmare might come next. She will succeed she is our Maid of Steel.
