"Back From The Future Part One" brings us up to speed on the last two years of Winn Schott's life in the future and reveals the hero that he has become amongst the Legion. We also get further insight into how things are shaping up in this post-Crisis Earth Prime and how Lex Luthor is bent on finding out all he can about Leviathan. And we turn the heat up on Kara and William. Sigh.
Picking up from last week's photo of Winn being in Lex's hands, Brainy calculates the details of derailing a prison bus transport and frees "Winn?" from the authorities. Lex sits down with the new fugitive, who we learn is a doppelganger for our beloved Winn from another Earth. (Me smelleth plot contrivance) Lex exposits to us viewers that (I'm going to refer to him as...) ToyWinn is trying to get revenge for his father getting his patent stolen and therefore his suicide. Lex also coaches him that he's being amateur about it and that whatever he does he needs to think bigger and he points him to National City's Toy Fair where ToyWinn's nemesis will be unveiling something new. ToyWinn starts his planning saying to his dead father (who on Earth Prime is not "his" father, but, anywho…) that he will be living forever. At the Toy Fair ToyWinn tries to take out the nemesis but is thwarted by our beloved Winn who shows up in a Legion ship and saves the day; but, ToyWinn is not caught and foiled. Winn is crazy upset that this is not done because, as he explains to Supergirl and Alex, his future self is being threatened because he is being framed for this murder and will lose his wife and daughter. This is news to the SupeSisters and they are thrilled for him. It looks like ToyWinn had an accomplice and Brainy is quick to step in and says he'll investigate. Winn also believes that Lex Luthor is a hero so the SupeSisters take him to see J'onn who has built his own Superfriends hideout which he christens "The Tower" and they get Winn all Crisis'ed up. Winn barfs in the bag. Repeatedly. (This is by far the best reaction to anyone getting woken up to the real truth, 'jus sayin.') ToyWinn hacks the public frequencies and says he's angry that someone would try to take down his family and as soon as he gets 1,000,000 likes there's going to be fireworks like you've never seen. He can't be location tracked so they call in Nia to get a clue to his whereabouts. All she sees in her dreamscape is Brainy who turns into a tiger. Nia is upset because...see Brainy's 12th level jerkitude from last week. Winn says he can handle it. It seems Nia's descendant is Nura Nal (a very nice comic nod) and one of his best Legion buddies. Winn assures Nia that no one needs to let her fell devalued in any way. It is really a nice moment between them and you can tell the connection that Winn has to Nia's family. Winn deduces that ToyWinn would go back to his dad's old hangout but the heroes see that he was there but is long gone. They also deduce from the photos that the Rojas family has something to do with the Schott betrayal and therefore ToyWinn will be attacking at Andrea's address at National City University, home of the Tigers. Ahhhhhhhhhhh. Andrea blabs Obsidian and having both your life and your dream, and not having to choose between them, and puppies, and wine, and naked babies. (Wait, what?!) Anywho, ToyWinn gets discovered in the mascot tiger suit and unleashes three big mechanical tigers to attack our assembled Care Bear staring heroes. The music cranks up "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor. (Yes, that one. Yeeeeeeeesssssssss, I'm being cereal!) Supergirl's heat vision is not doing much but Winn's Legion ring has concentrated Nia Nal's powers and takes the kittens down. Winn sees his opportunity to confront ToyWinn and there's a bomb but ToyWinn doesn't care. He drops the dead man switch and Winn teleports himself out of there. Supergirl superspeeds everyone to safety and everything blows up. Winn's wanted poster and bounty of $12,000,000 is now gone replaced by the picture of his wife and daughter. Winn finds Brainy in the Tower and confronts him about what he's doing. Brainy confesses that he's lying to everyone and also working with Lex. He brought ToyWinn into play knowing everything that would happen and that no one would get hurt but the problem is Lex is a variable that he cannot control. Winn is SuperAngry but then decides that since everything worked out that he can forgive his friend Brainy. He also agrees to keep Brainy's secret even as Brainy admits he never wanted to break things off with Nia. It's game night! Cheers to new friends (William) and old friends that find their way home. The DEO is locking up the ToyWinn evidence when the case with the computer that he was talking to about living forever...comes back to life. Not him. The case. Comes back to life. The case...
Remember that whole Leviathan thing? Lex does and he's got Brainy on his side. Lena wants Lex working on her "Do no Harm" project but she's lost her q-waves. Lex assures her to stick to the plan and Brainy agrees that Leviathan has to be the major focus and that he won't rat them out to the Superfriends. Lex needs Lena to go ask Andrea about her Leviathan knowledge. Lena's not happy but agrees. The two old friends sit while Lena forgives Andrea for taking the medallion. Andrea questions why now and Lena explains that she knows about Leviathan. Andrea is visibly moved and is glad that someone else knows. Lena wants Andrea to know that she will help her get out of anything Leviathan asks of her. Andrea says that they never have asked anything, just that one day they would come calling. (So I guess we're Acrata-less in Earth-Prime.) Lena has her information and leaves Catco. Lex uses Brainy to get on board Winn's Legion ship and finds the cube of all-ness. All knowledge (it connects to sub-conscious), all genie-like(it produces whatever you want), all what-do-they-have-this-kind-of-thing-in-the-future-for-anyway?! The cube of all-ness shows Lex the major Leviathan players and he targets in on Gemamnae. Later he takes the cube to Lena who finds her missing q-waves. They were out there they just needed to be brought into the right time. (uhhhhhhhhhh) Lex muses to Lena that Mum would be thrilled seeing them playing so well together. Lena does not co-muse.
Pulitzer winner Kara and William go to the Toy Fair to cover the "Valient" Lex Luthor on the debut of his action figure. (If anyone wants to get me something for my birthday, 'jus sayin.') William gets down to business about how Lex took out Russell Rogers' company and how Russell subsequently disappeared and you wouldn't happen to know anything about that, would ya? Lex poo-poos him down off of the ledge and pulls Kara aside to let her know that if William continues his "L-expose" that it will not go well for him. Later at Catco Kara agrees with William that Lex is not the hero he seems to be but he should probably still drop it. Instead he spies on Lex even getting photographic evidence of him gaining access to Winn's ship. Kara, seeing he's not going to give up, suggests that they partner up to investigate Lex. Then comes the nasty sandwich he's going to eat at the office all by his lonesome. Then he comes to game night. Then comes Part Two of this story. And then comes The CW. And then comes much smooching. Oh Lawd!
Winn's back! Let's face it, Jeremy Jordan is sorely missed and no one said it better than Papa Bear with the hug. What I adored about this episode was Winn's realization that as much as he was always trying to run away from his father that he kept running to the hero that he wanted to be. But instead of settling on being The Guardian's "overwatch" he has grown into a true man of the galaxy and a real hero to the world(s), and more importantly, to his family. I love the true-to-life story of Winn's character that matches Jeremy's real-life journey over the last couple of years. I know we only get him back for three episodes, but I think that is going to be the absolute best way to remember why he belongs in our Supergirl world and hopefully continue to bring him back in doses. I'm not sure why we need The Tower, except that the DEO is Lex-ified, but even still this is a lot of effort to create StarLabs or the Arrow Bunker, or Uncle Gambi's underground lair in National City. Is the new Hall of Justice in Central City and therefore unaccessible? Maybe. Relationship drama - it's what's on The CW. I get it. Usually I enjoy it but given in such high doses this week, and likely even more when we return in Part Two, it gets to be a bit much. Will Brainy be able to win Nia back once Lex is shown to be his true self? Not if she's smart! Twice burned, third time? Don't be an idiot, Nia. Will William and Kara figure out the balance of two lives just as sweet as she and Mon-El? Ehhhhhhhhhhhh. I noted in the Facebook group that the writers are having a swell time pulling a rabbit out of their hat and chalking it up to "Post-Crisis Reset." Like the ToyWinn doppelganger from another Earth...how? They're going to need to Reign (ha!) that in quick. It was a well crafted story that I enjoyed quite a bit for no other reason than Winn being back. And that's reason enough. Rating? 8 out of 10 vacation weeks to mask evil.
Lex Luthor is the Man of Tomorrow and he is controlling everything today. He is the head of the DEO and many think he is a hero. Only a select few know the truth. Not many could have their memories restored by J'onn J'onzz. He warned that restoring everyone's memories would cause irreparable damage.
We discover that Lena knows everything because Lex made a deal with the monitor to preserve her memories. Lillian feels like she knows what is going on based on what her son tells her, but you see herein lies the power. Lex can edit the story. He can tell his mother only what he wishes her to know. Lex is always holding the cards trying to keep the advantage for himself.
Brainy is really trying to be a good boyfriend for Nia. He is learning the art of making her feel special without smothering her. At a smoothie stand he is faced with someone he didn't expect. It's another Brainiac. Back at the DEO there is even more including a female version who thinks she is the director. It turns out that to avoid the antimatter wave some aliens used a wormhole that led to a safe haven. Spending time with all these Brainiacs you begin to realize that Prime Brainy is different. He seems a step behind the others. When our Brainy was very young his father put personality inhibitors on him after fearing he may turn out like his mother. She put an entire planet in a bottle without stopping to think about the effect it would have on the inhabitants of that world. This is possibly the reason that Brainy did not see Crisis coming. The inhibitors kept him cut off from the Main Brain.
Kara wants to take this chance to be honest with Lena. She doesn't know about the deal Lex struck with The Monitor to leave Lena's memories intact. Kara attempts to sway Lena to work with her. Lillian warns Lena that working with Supergirl could lead to pain, however if she were to take Lex's side her feelings would be spared. There is no doubt that once Lex no longer benefits from something he will pull out of that deal. You can't have hurt feelings if you know up front there are no emotions involved. Lex even used a truth seeker to assure Lena that he would stop working with her the moment it stops benefiting him.
Did I mention that one of the Brainiacs has his world in a bottle? I do understand the motivation. His planet was about to be swallowed by antimatter and he had the knowledge that could give his people a second chance. What kind of existence is that? In his desperation to bring his people back he wants to open the bottle. The consequences of which would be catastrophic. Both worlds would die due to the energy released. Thank goodness Supergirl and Brainy are able to stop this from happening.
Nia encourages Prime Brainy to remove his inhibitors. Now having access to the Main Brain the female Brainiac 5 warns that fighting Lex Luthor will cause more harm than good. She has already seen this part of the timeline and knows the outcome. She urges our Brainy to make better choices. As a result Brainy warns Lex that his team is making plans to stop him. Lex doesn't seem too concerned but does have a special assignment for his new ally. Lex needs future knowledge of Leviathan. After all, Lex Luthor doesn't want to have anyone else achieving world domination except for himself.
What about Obsidian North? They want their technology in every single house. What are they going to do? Use the power of suggestion to get people to do what they want? People will be lost in a fantasy world that is so believable it's hard to separate the real world and the virtual reality. Will they put us all in little bottles and leave us happily lost in a world made up by our own minds? One thing is for sure. Bottle episodes usually are a self contained story told in one hour. This episode has ramifications in it that will affect many episodes to come.
Loss is hard. How do you even begin to mourn an entire universe? Our Paragons must pick up the pieces of their shattered lives and find a way out. They are trapped in the Vanishing Point with a super villain. On a positive note Lex Luthor has a brilliant, albeit dangerous mind. Maybe his scheming can help them escape. Then there's the question of their loving speedster Barry Allen. Where has he run off to?
Barry has entered the speed force. He believes that could be the key to breaking free. The question still remains. Where is there to go? The antimatter has consumed the entire world and not just one world but all of them. Without an infusion of additional power our scarlet speedster will continue to keep getting ejected out of the speed force back to the darkness of the Vanishing Point. They need more help.
Oliver Queen was not named as a Paragon. He is something else. He has been on this road of transformation since the billionaire playboy got stuck on an island. He did not want to return to Earth when Constantine and John Diggle went to Purgatory to retrieve his soul. Oliver is beyond that now but that doesn't mean he can't help friends now. As The Spectre hecan light the spark.
We witnessed how Mar Novu started his universe hopping ways. We saw how his curiosity resulted in the creation of the antimatter universe. In this terrible place rose an Anti-Monitor. He is a tyrant set on death and destruction with shadow demons to serve him. Can the destruction of this horrible place help our heroes restore our universe? Can that enormous amount of power be turned around to recreate some of the billions that were lost in the blink of an eye?
Oliver meets Barry in the speed force to give him advice and a power boost. This team has the harder part of the quest. They all fought valiantly against the shadow demons as Oliver went toe to toe with the Anti-Monitor. The spark lit in their battle caused an explosion that gave Earth its' rebirth.
The Paragons are disoriented as they are thrust into life in this new place. This is not the dawn of time or a world rising from the ashes of another. This is an Earth full of life and already in the middle of the story. Only the Paragons know what has happened. J'onn, our Paragon of Honor, honors Oliver by telling key people of his sacrifice.
Sara takes charge as the Anti-Monitor threatens to destroy all that Oliver sacrificed to restore. The power he gained as the Spectre was enough to birth a universe but the Anti-Monitor lives on to cause havoc.
Ray, Ryan, and Wells put their brilliant minds together to solve a problem. Brute force alone is unable to overcome this villain. Wells owes this world his intellect considering he is the reason we are in this mess. He released the Anti-Monitor from his prison. How do you solve a big problem? Perhaps make it smaller.
Our Super hero brain trust puts their heads together and with the fast fingers of Barry construct a device. When launched at the Anti-Monitor by Supergirl it really shrinks him down in size. He should be much easier to contain now. You know what else will be easier now? Teaming up with super friends and joining forces against the villains that attempt to harm them. Here on Earth Prime all the heroes coexist and according to the citizens of this planet it has always been this way. What the Paragon's experienced did happen even if most people won't have a memory of it. Lex Luthor for example has rewritten his destiny. He has won the Nobel Peace Prize. That can't be right! I have got to fly. I must gather my Superfriends for a meeting. There is so much to discuss. This is your eye in the sky Green Butterfly. I need you to keep your eyes peeled for small changes we may encounter in the weeks to come. The repercussions of this crisis could be infinite!
We have heard from the Paragons of Podcasting. Now it is time to hear from you. The Heroes of historical facts of Supergirl's past episodes. The Superfriends that keep the conversation going all week long. Silver Vox and Green Butterfly appreciate you so much. There will always be a seat at the table for you. We are counting on you to help us identify the changes caused by this crisis for many episodes to come.
There is just nothing left. The Paragons stand alone in the darkness. They are on the Vanishing Point and there is nothing left. There is no family, no friends, and no Earth. How can a universe that stretched infinitely be reduced to nothing? How can they bring all they love back from crisis? How can they do anything now that Lex Luthor has vanquished Superman? Lex could never be the Paragon of Truth. Paragon of evil masterminds for sure but not truth.
We must help Kara remain hopeful she is our Paragon of Hope after all. Luckily we have all of you. Silver Vox the Paragon of Letting Every Voice Be Heard, saved all your letters and brought them here. We will find out what plot points you love and what plot points could have been better. Green Butterfly, the Paragon of Optimism, cannot wait to discuss your thoughts about how we are going to get out of this mess.
Will there be only one world or will we return to a universe of infinite possibilities? Will all the lives of our super friends be restored or will we be left mourning some as fallen heroes. How will Oliver Queen, now something else, play a role. Spector is a mystery to me. Can he help the Paragons now that all of their teams have been swallowed by antimatter?
We have to tune in January 14th at 8/7c on the CW to find out! This is Green Butterfly, your ever faithful eye in the sky.
In the beginning there was only darkness. Things changed and the emptiness was filled. Many worlds were born. There were countless variations and endless possibilities. On these Earth's protectors began to rise. People who would look after all those citizens taking steps to fulfill their various destinies. Thus the age of heroes was born.
On Earth 38 the DEO is in a state of frantic action. Brainy says there are signs of a worldwide earthquake. J'onn begins to brief the team about what the Monitor has told him. There is a wave of antimatter headed their way. This wave carries with it the power to wipe out entire Earths from existence. The next cosmic location to be effected is Argo City. Kara must find a way to warn Clark. J'onn begins to head up an evacuation plan. They are going to need a portal. As director of the DEO Alex must make hard choices. She must go apologize and put her trust in Lena Luthor to save the innocent residents of Earth 38.
Like his Father before him little Johnathan Kent has to be placed in an escape pod bound for Earth 1. At the same moment Argo is consumed Harbinger grabs his parents. They are added to the group she has assembled for the Monitor. The Earth shakes and a giant tower emerges. These structures have been placed on key Earth's. Kara and Clark work on getting the towers functioning. Oliver gathers a team to take an offensive stand. Lois, Sara and Brainy set out to find where baby Jonathan has landed.
Their quest for the tiny Kryptonian takes them to Earth 16 in 2046. Sara comes face to face with a remorseful Oliver. He apologizes saying he should have never taken her on the Gambit. Sara assures Ollie that getting on that boat was not a bad thing. It led her to where she is now. It was her destiny. The team retrieves Jonathan and returns to Earth 38.
Upon their return the remaining heroes are facing off against a hoard of shadow demons. The Monitor said the battle is lost and resources must be conserved. Oliver refuses to give up until more people are evacuated. He had just told Mia that she must carry on and start telling her own stories. Unfortunately it looks like Oliver himself will not be around to witness it. He has given his life for Barry and Kara and the innocent souls of earth 38.
There is no time to grieve with the antimatter wave taking Earth after Earth without discretion. They must find the seven Paragons and then they can win the fight. In a lucky twist of fate some of the elite heroes were already among them. Sara Lance is the Paragon of Destiny. Barry Allen is the Paragon of Love. Martian Manhunter is the Paragon of Honor. Kara Danvers is the Paragon of Hope The quest is on to find three more.
Kara and Kate follow a lead to Earth 99 Gotham. There they find a Bruce Wayne that is broken in both body and spirit. The Kate on his Earth has died. He and Superman got in a fight that left the Man of Steel dead and Bruce crippled. Needless to say Bruce is not happy with Kate's Kryptonian friend. As he is dying he gives Kate a Kryptonite medallion for safe keeping. Batwoman may think her mission is a failure. However upon her return Ray Palmer's Paragon detector indicates that Kate Kane is the Paragon of Courage.
Lois and Clark are Earth hopping. They are trying to warn all the Supermen of the Multiverse. You see Lex Luthor is on a quest to kill them all. Among the Men of Steel dwells one who has faced more than the rest and still remains a Hero. A rouge villain took everything from this Kal El in one explosive move. Having survived this experience has made this Superman the Paragon of Truth.
Barry Allen can not accept Oliver's fate. He was prepared to die in Crisis but not for his friend to die for him. Mia and Barry go on a mission to find a Lazarus pit that has yet to be destroyed by Nyssa. Sara is very uncomfortable with this plan. She knows all too well the consequences of being submerged in that magical water. In the end she helps them because she misses Ollie too. They succeed in reviving his body. Oliver's soul however is a different story.
Kara is really struggling with what has happened to her Mother and Earth. She comes very close to using the Book of Destiny despite the risks that would entail. The Monitor says to use that type of power to change an outcome could cause insanity. Kara believes her role as the Paragon of Hope means she should remain hopeful. That she can fix this immensely sad turn of events. Thank goodness Kate is there to talk her out of it. Supergirl doesn't push mystical power past the point of no return.
Living under the crimson sky of death can be pretty stressful. All you want to do is hold your loved ones close until the danger subsides. This is all Ryan Choi wants to do when Iris, Ralph and Ray come to see him. Iris is very persuasive in her argument that humans also have important roles to play in the fight to save the Earth. They need Ryan on their side. He is the Paragon of Humanity.
If there is any hope to save Oliver's humanity they must save his soul. It is time for Constantine to make a deal with the devil. On earth 666 Constantine looks to his old friend Lucifer Morningstar. He gives them a round trip ticket to purgatory. As long as they can find Oliver's soul before the picture on the ticket fades away.
Cisco has found the source of the antimatter wave. The monitor restores Cisco's vibe power and he and Barry race over to the source to try to stop the destruction. When they arrive they find Flash from Earth 90 trapped on the cosmic treadmill that is powering this disaster. Vibe is able to breech Earth 90 Flash off the treadmill but the Anti- Monitor has programmed in a fail safe. All the remaining Earths will disintegrate at once if The Flash stops running. This is the moment that Barry has prepared for. This is the mission he has been running toward. The monitor said The Flash must die in Crisis. He never said which one. Before Barry can climb upon the cosmic treadmill Earth 90 Flash temporarily steals his speed. Earth 90 Flash has led a full life and would like to give Barry the opportunity to live his. Earth 90 Flash runs and runs until he is reduced to molecules. The only Earth left in the multiverse is saved.
Oliver will not return with his daughter and best friend. Oliver feels he has to become something else. In purgatory Oliver meets The Spector. He feels taking on this identity is his latest mission. Back on the Waverider the Anti-Monitor has infiltrated the Paragons. He takes over Harbinger and fights his alter ego the Monitor.
In the last moments of the Multiverse our Paragons are transported to the Vanishing Point. A place that exists outside of time and space. All is lost. There are no more earths. They are once again in darkness as it was in the beginning. Can the Paragons do anything to put right what has been destroyed? What will Oliver Queen contribute as The Spector? The end of the world does stop one of the most intelligent mad men in the Universe. Lex Luthor has changed his destiny putting himself in the place of the Paragon of Truth. Can our heroes restore the Multiverse? Will there be many Earths or just one? Will the cosmos soon be full again or an empty black void as far as the eye can see? Can they do it all with one of the world's most cunning villains in their company? We will have to wait until January 14th at 8/7c on the CW. Until then this your Green Butterfly always with her eyes to the skies!
Rama Khan is a god. He orchestrated some of the most enormous tragedies in history. Noah's flood, the volcano in Pompeii, even the demise of the dinosaurs can all be traced back to him. Now he wants to cleanse the World. Take out mankind for the crime of existing. In his eyes humans are simply abusing the Earth and squandering it's resources. The council is not happy with Rama Khan's recent performance. Perhaps they will put someone else in charge. Will the next Elder in charge condemn Earth 38 to a worse fate?
Lena Luthor also wants to change the World. She doesn't have dreams of fire and destruction. Her plan is one where the whole World will bend to her will. She calls it Operation Non Nocere " Do no Harm ". Lena is going to exploit Malefic's powers and Kara's trust to mind control the entire population! Supergirl is not willing to give up hope that Lena can be saved and put back on the right path. Kara pleads with Lena to not allow her mistake to plunge Lena down a path of darkness.
The director of the DEO can't let emotions make her decisions now. Love has left Alex somewhat distracted in the past few weeks. Her sister is too emotionally entangled in this situation. It is Alex who must look at the Myriad situation objectively. Brainy is by her side running a series of probabilities but in the end it is Alex's decision. Can she trust that Malefic is strong enough to defeat the mind control Q waves? Is Malefic sincere in wanting to help them in penance for his past deeds? Is Kara right? Can Lena be saved or must she pay for her decisions with her life?
Andrea Rojas wants to stop working for Leviathan. Something tells me this is not the sort of job you can walk away from. Rama Khan needs the power on Acrata to power the shadow staff. He wants to use his Earth moving power to awaken a sleeping giant residing under National City. There is a Supervolcano right under their feet. Supergirl must get to the tar pits fast before there is an explosion that by Brainy's calculations will be 10,000 times bigger than Pompeii!
Malefic kept his word and helped the DEO neutralize Myriad without the use of the Claymore satellite. When they went to the base to arrest Lena Hope said it was all her fault. Was this part of Lena's plan all along? Did she develop this program and integrate it into Eve's body so that she would have someone to assume responsibility and keep herself out of jail?
J'onn gave Alex some great advice in this episode. People are going to make mistakes. You have to give them a chance to do better. Give them the opportunity to step back into the light. I am so glad that Supergirl is a Hero that never loses hope. We are going to need that in the crisis to come. I will keep my eye to the sky. We are going to need all of our super friends. The consequences of the coming crisis could be infinite!
"Tremors" brings us a lot of relationships that have very shaky foundations get shaken - not stirred - up to find out what's really at the heart of the matter. We had everything from shrieking hysteria to submission and forgiveness. If you weren't emotionally ready, this episode might have earthquaked you right off of your couch!
Lena Shoots, She Scores!!!!!!
The uber creepy Leviathan lady, that we find out is "Margot," arrives in Lena's penthouse to collect the medallion that was so hotly contested in last week's episode. Lena has a force field, duhhhhhhh, and so Margot retreats. Hope is there, duhhhhhhhhh, and inquires of Lena why she continues to provoke Leviathan over something that has no inherit value anymore. Lena replies that not only does it have sentimental value it will work toward her plan to find what she needs to put Project Non Nocere (Do No Harm) into place. She will keep putting herself in danger and Supergirl will save her! At a ceremony in a local park, sure enough, Rama Kahn introduces himself in broad daylight and demands the medallion. Lena activates her Supergirl call-signal watch and leaps off the cliffs. Supergirl grabs her in the nick of time and heat visions Rama Kahn into retreat. Later at the DEO Brainy puts together that Rama Kahn is an ancient alien that has enormous power to inflict world destroying events. The team needs someone who's fought powerful aliens and has the right tech to do it - which is really funny because that's exactly what Lena needs to. Huh! This sounds like a job for Lex Luthor! Lena knows that Lex's toys are all at Fort Summit but his big time stuff was destroyed for sure. I mean, right?! Supergirl pipes in that no, actually, Lex's stuff along with everything that can hurt the Super-Cuzzes are held at the Fortress of Solitude. Lena offers to make a shopping list but Supergirl just invites her to come with! Girl time!!! Lena is awestruck at the Fortress and is dumbstruck at the quantum processor that runs the whole thing - except hold on the awe and dumb. After the "L-protocol" nearly starts trying to take Lena out she turns around and manipulates the processor to do what she wants. The two start Kryptonian Assault Weapon Amazon shopping through the inventory and come across a tiny gun that Lex keeps under his wigs. Okay, HAAAAAAA! Lena also comes across the Myriad weapon. Remember that from Season 1? (Seriously, why are all of these things kept on cold storage?) Because Lena was still in Metropolis during all of those Astrid-Non shenanigans, Supergirl explains that the weapon made all of National City into human zombies. Lena drools. And she also finds an alien cannon disruptor thingamajig. Rama Kahn shows up and he and Supergirl come to mutual dissatisfaction of each other and Supergirl ends up getting the best of him along with aforementioned Lena and the thingamajig. Lena runs off hoping she can grab Myriad and get away with her other Lex toy, the transportal watch, but Supergirl finds her and asks what she's doing with Myriad. Lena says, "Well, you've found me out. I've been using you, like you've been using me." And here come the histrionics. They start slow but crank up quickly. Lena unloads everything that she's been knowing, feeling, planning. All of it. She tells Supergirl that she knew because Lex told her - on the day that she killed her own brother. Supergirl thinks she killed Lex, but actually finds out that he landed in the cabin from his and Lena's very disturbed childhood and that Lena was there with the loaded gun. She knew he had to be stopped and that she needed to protect her friends. Those friends who, as it turns out, Lex revealed to her, knew about Kara and Supergirl being one and the same. Supergirl asks why she didn't come to her. Betrayal!! Lena says she told Kara she didn't want to trust anyone but Kara wouldn't let up and so she let her in, Kara saying "ad nauseum" that she would never lie or betray Lena. Lena shrieks "I killed my brother for you!" and then turns the L-protocol on to trap Supergirl and subject her to low-level Kryptonite. She says she won't kill Supergirl, that "she's not a villain. You shouldn't have treated me like one." and walks through the portal back to National City. Supergirl is trapped with tears streaking down her face.
Alex's Blown Up Day
After Brainy figures out that Rama Khan ("Think God for this selfie generation.) is on the scene the two Fortress field-trippers go off to get weapons while Alex and Brainy will keep looking for RK and Rip Roar as well. They get a confirmation signal on Rip Roar and go to the spot, only for it to be a trap and a bomb. Brainy gets a nasty gash on one of his receptors and Alex comes away with a dizzying concussion. Alex is rather perturbed that Leviathan would put Rip Roar out there for no good reason but Brainy says they can use the armor to put clues together. Back at the DEO, Alex is recuperating and Kelly shows up. Alex should have called her to let her know that she was OK, but she didn't so Kelly started going down worst case scenario territory since her fiancée died before. Kelly is ready to break things off with Alex to protect herself but Brainy interrupts because the gash in his head has made him come to the answer even quicker. He and Alex rush off to the building that is close to the National City tar pits that also has the signal that Brainy has identified as Leviathan's logo. It's also close by to his favorite coffee shop and his Tuesday morning Pilates. Anywho, the two go into the building but Gemamnae (see notes below) disguises where Leviathan actually is and the two leave. Later that evening Alex goes to find Kelly and tells her that she was in a hurting place when Kelly came on the scene and helped her heal. She wants to offer the same to Kelly. Kelly asks what if they can't fix what's wrong and Alex answers that they will because "you feel like home. You feel like home too." They kiss and start on their healing journey.
Leviathan Took Out The Dinosaurs - What The Heck?!
Margot goes to report in that she could not get the medallion from Lena Luthor. Rama Khan is irritated, it was a simple task; but, alas, Lena is not a simple target. We're also introduced to Gemamnae (although never named in the episode, only from the end credits) and we are not introduced to their direct relationship. We do learn from Mitch Pileggi's excellent expository tone that their ship, as big as an asteroid, crashed on Earth, wiping out the dinosaurs. Dude, I already really don't like these aliens! Everything was peachy until these pesky human beings started mucking about and screwing everything up. "The Elder" left Rama Khan and Gemamnae as caretakers of the Earth and so today we have Leviathan. Also it would seem that Rama Khan is an earth-bender and that he has the ability to sense-find anyone anywhere on the planet because, as he claims in the Fortress of Solitude, "I Am The Earth!"
J'onn's Brother Really Sux, Except Now He's A Superfriend
J'onn suffers another psychic attack that feels like Malefic except it can't be him because they sent him back to the Phantom Zone, and he feels guilty about that because that's now the third time he has locked him away somewhere. J'onn tries to conjure up M'yrnn and succeeds. M'yrnn tells J'onn he is sensing Malefic because he's still here. J'onn's like "in my mind," and M'yrnn's like, "no, across town." Martian humor, amirite?! M'yrnn takes on the burden of the decisions that have led to where Malefic is now and tries to alleviate J'onn's guilt over helping his father who was suffering with this horrible choice of what to do with Malefic. He tells J'onn that he must decide to either open himself up to Malefic and take what's coming or banish him away to the Phantom Zone for good. Either way he will lose no love or support from M'yrnn. J'onn goes to Malefic with the Phantom Zone projector but turns it off. He says that he will open his mind to Malefic so he can see that J'onn had the right motives, even if they ended up hurting his brother. J'onn kneels and begs for forgiveness knowing that Malefic can now reach in and destroy his mind. Malefic says he will go in and see and then kill J'onn. He sees the flood of memories from J'onn's point of view and is left stunned by the hatred and revenge that was driving him for so long. Malefic extends his hand and the brothers embrace.
Closing Thoughts
Words matter, kids. When you start throwing out phrases like "you used me," "you betrayed me," "you shouldn't have treated me like a villain," you better have really good justification for it. Lena throws out that Supergirl is such a great actress, all those times that Lena was saving who she thought was her fragile friend. In fact, Lena is the one who is fact acting. We can parse the words and the phrases and find evidence for and against all of them. This Season is about the fight for Lena's soul. Supergirl begs her not to take Myriad and use it because Lena is a "good person." Lena's response of "No, you don't get to tell me what I am anymore!" comes from a place of hurt and sheer emotion that is altogether without reason and logic. Can Supergirl and we hold this tirade against Lena in the end? I don't know, how far is she willing to go to prove her independence and superiority in a different way than how Lex did it, but from the same motivations? It's hard to get the Luthor out of the girl, folks. I will always want Lena to be the non-Luthor but the powers-that-be seem to be pressing other buttons. Otherwise, I'm happy to be gaining more understanding of Leviathan and am thrilled for the Mitch Pileggi and Cara Buono duo of Rama Khan and Gemamnae. I'm also thrilled that the story line of the Martian bros turned out for the good. Was this the Monitor's plan all along because we're going to need Malefic on the heroes' side for the upcoming Crisis? Hmmmmmmmm… Finally, I'm not rooting for the Alex/Kelly ship because of Kelly's past damage plus Alex's distracted DEO decision making. If they start turning this into a healthy dynamic with appropriate work/life boundaries then of course I'll get in the boat. Right now though, not so much. One more episode to wrap up the 2019 Supergirl year and then "Crisis!"
Leviathan lurks in the shadows. It makes perfect sense that they would help create a shadow assassin. Power always comes with a price. Lena Luthor has led a life filled with betrayal. Her best friend at boarding school betrayed her. Her own brother and now Kara has betrayed her. I am confident there will be a price to pay for the secrets and lies.
Years ago two young girls met with similar family dynamics. They were rich girls whose families were ignoring them. The girls bonded over their loneliness and their shared love of the movie Titanic. They stayed in touch through the years. When Lex orchestrated a grand plan to kill Superman Lena calls on her friend Andrea for help.
Deep in the jungle of Costa Rica Lena and Andrea follow clues laid out in a legend. They are on the hunt for an artifact that will give them power over shadows. Andrea loses her footing and falls in a hole. Lena goes for some rope to rescue her. In her absence Andrea begins to explore. She is first upon this mysterious Medallion of Acrata.
Andrea retrieves the medallion from the rock it was set into and a man appears. He tells her that he can help her. Andrea's father owns a tech company named Obsidian. Obsidian is struggling because it's rival brought a superior cellphone to market. Mr. Rojas is so distressed he is threatening to take his own life. The mysterious man says he has the power to change all of this. The only catch is she must serve Leviathan when they call upon her.
Lena rescues Andrea who tells her the legend must be wrong. There is no magic medallion here. Someone else must have decoded the clues as they had. Lena will need a new plan to deal with Lex.
In present day our super friends are battling the shadow assassin. She is trying to get to Rip Roar. Will she kill him like she did the spider woman? I think not, because Andrea is the reason it was there in the first place. Leviathan was going to kill Russell for seeing too much. Andrea had to talk fast to prove that he could be an asset to the organization. He is studying Biotech. The tech Russell has developed can bring soldiers back from the brink of death.
At the DEO a battle is raging. Lena has used her inception power to gain control of Alex's agents. I thought the DEO agents had a defense mechanism against inception. How did so many agents get infiltrated? The super friends prevail. This episode allowed us to peek through the shadows and shed some light on Lena's past. She left Metropolis to chart a new path for herself. She wanted to get out of Lex's shadow.
Supergirl and Alex were able to restore order at the DEO. Will Supergirl win the battle for Lena's soul? Hope says the Medallion of Acrata was drained of power. Leviathan says it never possessed power but merely activates the darkness within a person. Now that Lena has the medallion will she be able to ravage the darkness within? Leviathan is lurking in National City. What will their next move be? Will they come seeking payment from Lena? Join Silver Vox and Green Butterfly next week for another super adventure. I have confidence that more answers will be revealed!
If you can dream it, then you can do it! With Obsidian virtual reality contact lenses your imagination is the limit. Join nine million of your closest friends in an adventure with no limits. William is still tirelessly investigating Andrea. Kara wants to help. He is very resistant. This is a dangerous business and he is afraid to get Kara wrapped up in it. He doesn't realize the Girl of Steel can handle herself. Strength alone will not save her. They are not dealing with just physical harm here. William speaks of the emotional and personal cost he has had to pay to chase down this story. William's best friend Russ is gone and Andrea Rojas has something to do with it. Together William and Kara will get to the bottom of this story.
Alex is interrogating Breath Taker with the help of a truth seeker. Unfortunately answers are not forthcoming. It seems these Villains are accomplishing task without knowing the details of who they are working for. Brainy comes up with a plan to interrogate the mysterious Villain from two weeks passed. This leads to more proof that we are dealing with pawns in a bigger game.
Lena is making more progress in her lab with Malefic. She promises that she will remove the mind block that protects J'onn from his wrath. All he has to do is incept creatures with a growing level of difficulty. Malefic passes the test subduing an aggressive lizard turning it into a docile reptile. Now he wants his reward. He must be blinded with the anger he feels for J'onn. Lena's mission is to do no harm. She will not remove the mind block so that harm can be done.
The launch of the contact lenses appears to be going smoothly but in the real world the DEO is tracking a problem. There has been a break in at one of Lex's storage facilities. The thief has been identified as Rip Roar. A man who's super suit gives him two additional long arms. Brainy says the marathon laser was stolen. This coupled with the pilfered particle amplifier can hit a target twenty six miles away and produce heat that is one hundred times hotter than the Sun. Kara must suspend her investigation with William and go check in with Alex. They are also using the private investigation skills of J'onn J'onzz. What he uncovers is truly unexpected.
When Kara confronts Rip Roar she is hit by the powerful laser. Supergirl is down but don't count it as a win for the bad guys yet. Kara calls for backup and they fly off to Antarctica. Rip Roar has his eye on Lake Vostok and the Polar Ice Caps. He uses the laser to punch a hole in the ice. The resulting geyser causes a seismic shift. Supergirl radios Alex to let her know that the rest of the team must go to the waterfront. The melting ice and gushing water has the potential to cause flooding of biblical proportions.
The residents of National City are blissfully unaware of the danger that surrounds them. Alex is definitely in grave danger of many things including missing her date anniversary as she rushes to save innocent people lost in a dream. Back in Antarctica J'onn and Kara fly in formation to create a whirlpool to draw the water down and keep it from spilling out and flooding the Earth. Back in National City Dreamer is fully awake and battling a tidal wave with her dream powers.
Let's hear it for the Superfriends. Another crisis has been averted but so much more of this story is left to be untangled. One question is answered. Rip Roar is William's long lost friend Russ. His mission was to flood the planet starting with the West Coast. Andrea wouldn't want that. The factories that produce her contact lenses are there. She would never make a decision that would jeopardize her own company. The mysterious woman who informed us that Leviathan is everywhere is impressed with Mrs. Rojas. What will Leviathan ask of her? What is this dangerous liaison? Join us next week for another adventure. Rest assured that our team can handle any crisis this world throws their way.
