    Jaan Nisar Akhtar was born in 1914 in Gwalior and left for heavenly abode on August 18th, 1976 in Mumbai, India. He left an indelible mark on Urdu Adab as a romantic and revolutionary poet. Jaan Nisar Akhtar’s repertoire contained Ghazal, Nazm, Qita, Rubai & Film songs. He was part of the progressive writers movement. His father Mushtar Khairabadi was a famous Urdu poet & his children Javed Akhtar and Salman Akhtar are also popular poets. Akhtar completed M.A.(Urdu) from Aligarh Muslim University. He is a recipient of Sahitya Akademi award. Akhtar wrote in simple language with extensive use of Hindi words.

  • Habib Jalib

    Habib Jalib was one of the revolutionary poets from Pakistan. He was born on 24 March 1929 as Habib Ahmad in a village near Hoshiarpur British India. His family migrated to Pakistan after partition. Habib started working as a proof-reader in Daily Imroze Karachi. He wrote in simple language and generally addressed common issues directly related to people. He was a staunch democrat and always opposed martial law, authoritarianism and state oppression. Some of his important books are Sir-e-Maqtal, Zikr Behte Khoon Ka, Gumbad-e-Bedar, Kulyaat-e-Habib Jalib, Is Shehar-e-Kharabi Main, Goshay Main Qafas Ke, Harf-e-Haqq, Harf-e-Sar-e-Daar, Ehad-e-Sitam etc. Habib Jalib passed away in Lahore on 12 March 1993. He had received the highest Civilian award of Pakistan Nishan-e-Imtiyaz (posthumously) in 2009. He was a people poet and his work will be relevant for times immemorial.

    A.M. Turaz is an Indian Poet, lyricist, and script writer. He has been associated with more than 40 Bollywood movies so far. He was born on 19 September 1981 at Sambhaleheda village in Miranpur Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. He is extremely popular in Mushairas. Not only his poetry is great but the personality he gets to the stage is electrifying. He has the attitude of a rockstar when he performs on the stage of mushairas. It is not easy to pull that off but he does it with ease and in style. I am big fan of his work. Listen to the episode you will enjoy his poetry and I am sure you'll become a fan of A.M.     Nida Fazli (12th October 1938 – 8th February 2016) 

    was a famous Indian Hindi and Urdu poet, lyricist and dialogue writer. He disagreed with the partition of India and was quite vociferous against the communal riots, dishonest politicians and fundamentalism. He was honored with the National Harmony Award for writing on communal harmony. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013 by the government of India for his contribution to literature.

    Kaifi Azmi was a famous Urdu poet and a well renowned lyricist of Bollywood. He was born on 14th January 1919 in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. His actual name was Athar Hussain Rizvi.  He has been credited to bring urdu literature to Bollywood movies. In 1942 he quit studies and joined the ‘Quit India movement’, a struggle against British to free India. He was a left leaning Marxist and joined progressive writers association, he is considered a stalwart among progressive poets. He passed away on 10th May 2002 in Mumbai, India but left an indelible mark in the hearts of his millions of his fans. He was a recipient of lots of awards; Padmashree, which is one of the Indian Government's highest civilian awards.
