Maino and the Mayor episodes

  • It. Is. COLD!

We start the day off with a wind chill of -23. It’s so cold that Jim actually parked in a metered parking spot. (That’s when you know it’s cold!) The guys talk about the inauguration and the fact that Maino wanted to date Susan Ford, President Ford’s daughter. Civic Media Meteorologist Brittney Merlot tells us how long this cold spell will last. She says that the wind will continue for the next several days, keeping things very cold. She also shares some experiments she’ll try over the next few days, including creating ice balls in balloons and throwing boiling water into the below-zero air.

  • Weekly Best of Maino and the Mayor for Jan 18

Jim and John get to meet the sponsor of our Veterans Salute, Nate Olson from Olson Legal Group, LLC. We learn his military story, deployment, and how he eventually got into law. He was from Fond du Lac, his wife was from Iowa, and they met at U.W. Oshkosh. After leaving the area, they both loved the area so much they came back to the area to start their lives together. This guy has great energy, and we’re so thankful he’s stepped up to help tell the story of veterans in Northeast Wisconsin.

Then the owner of Pickle & Bags, Jeff Ehrke, joins the guys to talk a bit about his business.  They’re open 24/7 for reservations. With keyless door entry, 14,000 sq ft of versatile space, four courts, and a lively bar, this place has it all!

    • Sports Medicine, Ueck, Veterans Night

It’s Friday, which means a great visit with Mark Husen from Bellin Sports Medicine is in the house!! The guys are on a mission to learn and play pickleball, and Mark admits that there is an uptick in injuries for older athletes in that sport. Other injuries this time of year include slips and falls. Mark says you can slip and hit the ground in a matter of seconds. Watching your step and even wearing spikes on your shoes can help create a safer environment. Also, Maino is suffering from gout, and is only wearing one shoe. Enjoy that thought today! Then CBS 58 Sports Director Lance Allen joins to talk about his relationship with the late Bob Uecker. Lance kinda got his start here in Green Bay at TV 5 but moved to Milwaukee many years ago. He says that meeting and working with Uecker was a high point in his career. Then Nicole Stockman, Veterans Services Officer at UWGB, calls in to invite veterans and first responders to a Men’s Basketball game tonight.

    • TGIF & RIP

We’re glad it’s Friday, but also sentimental over the loss of Mr. Baseball, Bob Uecker. We reminisce about some of our favorite “Ueck” stories and play some audio from The Tonight Show in 1971. That spurs conversation about some of the best sportscasters in the state. Uecker, Irwin, and Garcia are brought up, along with folks like Big Al Sampson. Then our news director, Lisa Hale, joins to give a preview on what’s in store this weekend on NEWisco Weekend. It’s all about the importance of art in our lives.

    • Polar Plunge!

Addie Teeter joins us on this cold winter morning, and she brings even more of a chill with her by talking about the Special Olympics “Polar Plunge” coming up over the next several weeks in Northeast Wisconsin. From Madison to Milwaukee, to Wisconsin Rapids to Whitewater, the Special Olympics likely has a plunge coming to a location near you! Special Olympics works to create a new world of inclusion and community through sports. Then Rob Demovsky from ESPN joins to talk about the atmosphere at Sunday’s Packers/Eagles game. Apparently, there was a woman sitting in front of the press box, and she was screaming vulgarities at the broadcast crew and the Packer’s staff. Rob had to “gently” remind her to have a seat and close her mouth. 🙂

Holly Linder and Mike Schmidt with GRIT 920 discuss “inclusive, adaptive fitness”. GRIT 920 provides individuals of varying abilities the opportunity to train in a safe and supportive environment. They believe that everybody, regardless of their abilities, should have access to fitness and wellness programs that help them improve their mobility, balance, strength, and overall health. They’re looking for volunteers and also more individuals to join the program. Then our great friend in the mortgage industry, Kristen Ambos from Point Mortgage Corporation, joins us to have some fun and talk about if the industry is picking up now that the holidays are over. • Trucker Thursday!

The guys start the day off the rails, which is always fun! It’s Fig Newton Day, and Jim and John disagree about whether they are good cookies. A Maino & The Mayor Quick Poll shows that most listeners say “yes” to Fig Newtons. One listener texted in that Fig Newton and Mushroom Pizza is wonderful! That’s good news because it’s also National Pizza Week! Then, Northeast Wisconsin News Bureau Chief Lisa Hale joined to talk about a press conference held yesterday in Green Bay, announcing some great events that will be held in conjunction with the NFL Draft coming in April.

    • The Herd & Discover Oshkosh

Our show from our Oshkosh studio continues, and we welcome TV32 sportscaster Ted Steffaniak on the phone to talk about The Wisconsin Herd. Right now, the team is 2 and 5, and Ted says the team is playing quite well, and he’s seeing growth in the athletes. The guys talk about how great the Oshkosh Area is, not only for Herd games but all the other great events that take place there! Then “Mr. Energy”, Pat Tracey with Discover Oshkosh joins to discuss Oshkosh’s Restaurant Week. To give the full view of all of the events going on for 10 days, he brings Jay Supple from Fox River Brewing. The Supple family has been in the restaurant business for generations and he understands what radio announcers need: he brings in cheesecake, cannolis, beer, and Oshosh’s own Hughes’ candy.
