Maino and the Mayor episodes

  • Oh, Canada & Headlines with The Press Times

John Craemer & Kevin Osgood stick around from the USC Auxiliary. They’ll be set up at the All Canada Show at the Oneida Radisson Conference Center. The show focuses on general fishing, and John and Kevin will talk about boating safety in Northeast Wisconsin. Anyone can help and volunteer with the Auxillary HERE. Then, it’s our weekly visit with Kris Leonardt at the Green Bay Press Times. In our “Headlines With The Press Times” segment, we meet Kerry Yang, who works in the Mayor’s office with Green Bay city events. While her “day job” is interesting, she’s featured in this week’s edition of the paper and we learn about H.A.N.D.S. (Hmong Autism Neurodiverse Disability Support). We learn that the Hmong community, in general, doesn’t talk about issues and concerns in life, so this non-profit strives to spread awareness about Autism, disabilities, and other special needs by providing a supportive space for Hmong and Wisconsin families who need extra help through education, group support, and grants.

  • Trucker Thursday

It’s Trucker Thursday, and besides enjoying some of the best trucker songs ever, the guys talk about Maino’s plan to start working out at the KROC Center in Green Bay. He hasn’t gone yet for several reasons, including gout, not having proper workout clothes, and it being so cold—more conversations this morning about The Mayor wanting to take his dog on a plane trip. Then John Craemer & Kevin Osgood join us from the USC Auxiliary. They talk about water safety this time of year and the upcoming All Canada Show being held at Oneida Casino. Also, a discussion occurs about whether Maino looks like Walter Mattheau in “Grumpy Old Men.” What do you think?

  • Illustrations & Slices

A friend of the show and local illustrator Robb Mommaerts, joins Jim and John to let them know about a great event coming up with the Brown County Library system. The amount of talent this guy has is amazing, and we’re all jealous! At his upcoming event, he’ll talk about some of the steps he’s taken to get published! Then Civic Media‘s own Teri Barr joins us with another “Slice of Wisconsin.” And this one is all about the oldest bowling alley in the country!

  • Humpday Meanderings

The guys talk about how several tv stations across the state have cut their news and weather departments. We’re happy that we work for a company promoting local talent and coverage. Then, it’s Linda Blair’s birthday today. She was in the movie “The Exorcist“. John shares a very funny story about something that happened when he saw the movie. It made for some great laughs. The guys break down the first 48 hours of the Trump administration. And Maino teaches us about Heikki Lunta in the U.P.

  • Wild Geese & Anniversaries

Kim and Aydan Massey join us on this very cold morning to talk about their business The Wild Goose Exchange. The business is a buy, sell, trade store that buys clothes from other storefronts and the public. They’re also community-driven and partner with a variety of local artists, makers, and small brands. With stores in Appleton and Kenosha, they’re looking at expanding to Sturgeon Bay! We welcome another area museum to the show with Greg Vadney from the Rahr-West Museum in Manitowoc! The museum is celebrating their 75th anniversary and they have a bunch of great events planned to celebrate! They’re kicking off their year-long celebration with an open house on February 8th.

  • Art Colonies & Guitars for Vets

Beth Kowalski from the Neville Public Museum braves the cold weather to promote the museum’s 110th Green Bay Art Colony Exhibition. The Art Colony was founded in 1915 and is the oldest art organization in Green Bay. It was started by nine who met in their homes as an art appreciation club, and it continues to this day. Their exhibit will be at the Neville from January 25th through March 9th. Then Jack Swanson from Guitars for Vets in Appleton stops by to talk about how he got involved in G4V. Guitars for Vets serves at-risk United States Veterans impacted by PTSD and other service-related trauma.

  • Maino Oversleeps

For the first time during the Maino & The Mayor show, Maino is about a minute late. He lost his phone last night, and his alarm clock didn’t go off. In the business, we call that a “double whammy.” He makes it in just in time to talk with “Cheese Curd” Nick Slupski from The Doghouse about what’s new with the NFL Draft. We learn that if your business operates within “the zone” of the draft, the NFL takes 30% off the top! Who knew? We do now! We also talk about the bitterly cold weather and how it affects your car’s engine and tires.

  • Veterans Salute & Coffee & Spirits

A great friend of the show, Sam Floyd from Operation Coffee, is in to update us on his business. Sam served in the Marine Corps from 2002-2006 and was deployed to Afghanistan from 2003-2004. He started Operation Coffee in 2017 after 11 years of battling mental health and struggling to adjust to civilian life. His mission is to start conversations over coffee and to help our heroes find their new mission. He recently moved into a new brick-and-mortar location in Kaukauna and is now working toward having a coffee shop where customers can enjoy a cup of joe and some baked items. When we asked what folks can do to help Sam’s fellow veterans, he responded with, “Be available. Listen without planning to give advice. Be there, and be ready to listen.” Then Todd McLean from Sturgeon Spirits in Oshkosh joins the show to talk a bit about the business which supports local suppliers, promotes local history, and helps to make Oshkosh a special place.

  • Housing, Music and Mortgages

Crystal DeCleen from Ecumenical Partnership For Housing in Green Bay joins the show with Dr. Kim Shefchik from Doctors in Recital. EPH provides safety, stability, and solutions leading to self-sufficiency for families with children facing homelessness, and the Doctors in Recital show on Saturday helps raise money for their programs. Doctors in Recital is an evening of musical excellence put on by area physicians donating their time and talents to raise money for local causes. Then our mortgage guru, Kristen Ambos is in from Point Mortgage Corporation. She says she loves to “shop around” for programs that would benefit home buyers and shares a program we’d never heard of: a family-occupied mortgage. A family opportunity mortgage is a loan for a residential property bought for a parent or an adult child student or a special needs adult child who could not qualify for financing on their own.
