Welcome to Majors & Minors at Cal Poly Humboldt!
This show takes a close look at the rich academic offerings of our campus and all of the areas of study that can be pursued as a student. Each episode features an interview with a department Chair or a Professor and focuses on the specifics of an area of study, specifically the value of that pursuit both during the college experience and beyond.
This week Dr. Kaitlin Reed , Interim Chair of the Department of Native American Studies joins the show. Native American Studies at Cal Poly Humboldt is a continuation of Indigenous knowledge from time immemorial, presenting a depth of Native American experience from a distinctly tribal perspective. As the first California State University campus to offer a baccalaureate degree in Native American Studies, and still the only program of its kind in the CSU, Native American Studies continues to develop as a stand-alone department, with active input from tribes. This department is not meant to only serve Native American students in California; the program appeals to non-Native students who are passionate about issues of social justice, sustainable living and natural resource management. And this conversation with Kayla touches on many unique aspects of the curriculum and the department as well as the far reach of the subjects, both within academia and beyond, that are taught within the area.
The Department of Native American Studies is housed inside the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
