Holiness is a term we’ve all heard. We know God is Holy and that He calls His people to be Holy, but what exactly is Holiness? Does it matter if we do not understand what Holiness is? Does it affect our daily lives? And most importantly, does it matter to God that we have a biblical understanding of it? The answer is yes. God is Holy, and He calls His people to be Holy.

No matter what things may look like in the moment, God’s children can trust that He is always with them.

Habakkuk 3 is actually a Psalm used in Israel's worship. We know this from the musical definitions Shigionoth, Selah, and "to the Choirmaster." In poetic language, Habakkuk records God's power and character in both the Exodus and conquest of Canaan. His insight into the character of God provides the basis for his absolute trust even though everything in his world is about to collapse. His trust in the presence of absolute upheaval is a model for every Christian.

After dealing with deeply troubling questions in Chapter 1 about unanswered prayer and the problem of evil, Habakkuk now understands that the Lord will judge evil Babylon. This judgment is found in a series of "Woes" in 2:6-20. This morning, we consider two of these woes which have particular relevance to our own lives.

Habakkuk's prophecy occurs shortly before the Babylonian invasion of Judah in 605 BC. The oracle begins with Habakkuk in great distress. The prophet is reeling from unanswered prayer and deep perplexity about how the Lord could use a very evil nation to discipline His covenant people. The remainder of the book (chapters 2-3) reveals God's ultimate plan so that by the end of the prophecy, Habakkuk experiences a great reorientation of his faith. The book ends with Habakkuk in complete surrender to the will of God- no matter what happens in life. There are many practical applications we will explore in this 4-week series.
