Making It Up As We Grow: A Husband and Wife Share Their Story of Podcasting

We interrupt this regularly scheduled podcast to bring you a special bonus episode. There are couple "sound discrepancies" that you might hear, but this particular episode was edited at the beach and on an iPhone. I am a real stickler for sound, but this particular week, I simply had to let it go.

Sometimes our best-laid plans can go awry. The title of this episode was inspired by a line from the poem, "To A Mouse", by Robert Burns. It basically says that:

No matter how carefully a project is planned, something may still go wrong with it.

Did you figure out just by the introduction that this particular episode was going to include a bit of a twist? Jennifer and I had planned to bring you part 2 of our sit down interview with her as she explained the challenges of blogging and how important it has been for her to find her voice and authenticity. Everything was on track to do just that until…we decided to take a family vacation to the beach this week.

Creating and editing a weekly podcast filled with stories is easy, said no one ever. Creating and editing a podcast episode while at the beach, staying in a condo with your three kids is well, close to impossible. So, I thought of a backup plan.

There were no dynamic microphones, XLR cables and sound buffering available for me to use with this episode. Just a pre-recorded track with Jennifer and me talking and my iPhone to record my own thoughts both before and after our interview.

In this episode, Scott sits down with his wife, Jennifer for part one of a two part interview to find out how the art of makeup has defined Jennifer throughout her life. Wearing makeup since the age of 4, Jennifer developed a skill that has served her well through life.

Listen to how Jennifer describes her successes and setbacks with Scott and what solution they came up with together when life threw them a curveball back in 2008.

In this episode, Scott decides that the best way for his new podcast to be heard is to jump in his car and start peddling show to friends and neighbors via a compact disc. Okay, maybe not the most cutting edge technology, but effective. Jennifer also give her reaction to Scott on completion of their first episode. There are also some times when the both of them recording goes very wrong, but provides some always welcome comic relief.

Jack, Scott and Jennifer's oldest son makes another appearance and gives life to the title of this particular episode through referencing Apple founder, Steve Jobs. From a 9 year old, that's pretty intellectual I might add.

Lacie and Ashley give their honest feedback on what they heard on episode 001 and even pack in some funny zingers for good measure. Later, Scott and Jennifer try their hand at a true advertisement spot by JennySueMakeup.com.

Finally, concludes with a heartfelt tribute to Scott's mom who taught him a very meaningful poem during his teenage years.
